Can I remind users not to post defamatory allegations, please. For those of you who aren't sure what that means, please follow this simple rule: do not allege criminal acts where you do not know those acts to have been proven in a court of law (and in which case, please provide a link to a relevant judgement or press material).

    moderately,

Are you ,Madsl and K - 9 looking for my persinal view on abortion ?
If so, would you not first prefer to hear the views of candidates who are running for the Presidency ?????

Doesn't bother me personally what you think but you are making the issue out of it so I wondered why.

Mary Robinson would have been pro choice, not sure where McAleese stood on it and it doesn't matter to me what Norris, Higgins, Gallagher etc. thinks either. It has nothing to do with me. More importantly, it has nothing to do with the Presidency either.

Maybe Dana should run again for the disenfranchised socially conservative vote.

I referred to this issue as one of a number of ones where Norris has demonstrated a lack of consistency or has been evasive on the issue. It was Mr Norris who highlighted the abortion issue on his website so it is fair to ask why he hast actually answered the question. I see no reason why someone is running for the presidency should not be asked about one of the most controversial political issues. Why, for example, do we need to know that Mr Norris is a ' Joycean Scholar' ? Why should his preferred reading habits be any great concern to me ?

Because his personal and academic interests would be of interest to people, bit like Gallagher and his business interests, it's what they do and are interested in. You really are obsessing about him, wonder do you give all the candidates this minute attention?

I'm sure his views can be got easily by Googling it but I suppose the "have you stopped beating your wife yet?" type questions are more fun.

You're a great man at not answering questions that people ask but very fond of asking rhetorical questions.

Looks like things are falling apart for Norris - him getting the nomination is very much in doubt now.

Norris presidential campaign in disarray as key staff quit
DAVID NORRIS’s presidential election campaign has been thrown into turmoil with the resignation of two key officials over another controversy involving the Trinity Senator.

Director of communications Jane Cregan and director of elections Derek Murphy resigned from Mr Norris’s campaign team yesterday.

Losing your Director of Elections alone is devastating for a campaign.

    An other interesting part of the Irish Times article is this part;
The resignations follow claims about a court case in Israel involving Mr Norris’s former partner, Ezra Yizhak Nawi, who was convicted of having sex with an underage Palestinian youth in 1992. In more recent years Mr Nawi has clashed with the Israeli authorities for his political activities on behalf of Palestinians.

When contacted by The Irish Times yesterday, Mr Nawi said he would be prepared to speak about the background to the case but not until he had discussed the matter with Mr Norris.

The two men have remained close friends and continue to meet regularly and are in frequent phone contact. In the notes to his one-man show, Do You Hear What I’m Seeing? , in Clontarf Castle in 2007 Mr Norris referred to the work Mr Nawi was doing for human rights in Palestine.

“I am very proud that my former partner and close friend Ezra Yizhak Nawi places his life in jeopardy on a routine basis to help those he considers his neighbours in Israel/Palestine.

“Ezra is an Israeli-born Jew of Middle Eastern origin and as a ‘Good Samaritan’ his neighbours in this case are the downtrodden Palestinian subsistence farmers in the villages around south Hebron.”

Mr Norris’s campaign was embroiled in controversy earlier in the summer when comments he made about sexual activity between older and younger men and boys in Magill magazine in January 2002 resurfaced. While they set back his prospects of getting a nomination from county councils, he appeared to have recovered in recent weeks following an Irish Times poll that showed him leading the presidential race with 25 per cent support. By this week, 15 Oireachtas members had pledged to sign his nomination papers and he only needs another five names to get on the ballot paper.

Mr Norris made no comment to reporters when asked about the matter outside his Dublin home last night. He left his home shortly before 8pm, before crossing the street and entering another premises opposite. When reporters rang the doorbell shortly thereafter they were told that Mr Norris had left the premises.

This issue just wont drop for Norris. Makes me feel uncomfortable as a voter also, I have to say.

It doesn't. I think enough mud has been thrown at this stage, no matter what the truth is, it'll just stick.

I meant for personal opinion. in the grander scheme of things, regardless of facts, this is death to the campaign, yes. I'm just keeping an open mind myself as to my opinion of the man, until I have more facts.

I could launch into conjecture and speculation at this point, but I'm not going to launch into a blind defence. I will weigh it up on facts, others are free to weigh it up how they wish, such is democracy.

I hate to say this, but so far David has conducted a pretty poor campaign. His collegues, advisors and of course himself have performed rather dismally in their handling of all these controversies.

All this (including the Magill Article) should have been put to bed long before now. I really dont see how he can recover from this. I think he's fcuked.

    Im actually kind of gutted!

Who first put out the Nawi story in the last few days? If it's the individual I suspect, the issue has taken a very dangerous turn.

How could the publication of a newspaper article represents a very dangerous turn ?

" Norris decision to not attend the MacGill debate could be considered classic Norris in this campaign, he's been avoiding head-on debate.

His campaign staff quitting when he's so close to obtaining a nomination is shocking. Why are they not standing by him? "

Above is a comment from David Cochrane, founder of P.ie. I have pointed out repeatedly how evasive Norris is when dealing with a variety of issues and have been chastised for my troubles. When will we Irish ever learn not to put some of our politicians up on pedestals and always to insist on straight answers to questions. And i am talking about ordinary political issues and not about any controversial one. How can anybody take seriously a candidate who gives as a reason for not taking a salary cut the suggestion that ' a President from a working class background might need the money' ? Or who answers a question by saying watch a video which turns out to be just fluff ? Or speaks at a ' Right to Choose Rally' 2/3 years ago and then cannot answer whther or not he is in favour of abortion ?

Bit like the Newt Gingrich story in the US, many from his decreasing Presidential run have also left him high and dry. And who could blame them; the man's a PR disastor and apart from the odd stint on Fox "news" he is fast fading into political obscurity.

I hope we will see the last of Norris, too. His predisposition for sleeping with his (consenting) fellow males is his own affair, but his personality and political views are not very endearing to me.

enator Norris misses Glenties Presidential debate as campaign hits crisis

    Posted: 30/Jul 10:35
    Last Updated: 30/Jul 10:35

The organisers of the MacGill Summer School in Glenties have expressed there disappointment that Senator David Norris was a no-show at the first public forum for declared presidential candidates last night.

However, since it was confirmed that Senator Norris would not be attending, details have emerged of two high profile resignations from his campaign team which its thought may throw his bid to be president in to chaos.

While it has not be confirmed, it is thought that the resiginations yesterday, may have contributed to Senator Norris’s decision not to take part in the MacGill Summer School event.

His Director of Communications Jane Cregan and Director of Elections Derek Murphy have stepped down.

It’s reportedly over claims about a court case in Israel involving Mr Norris’ former partner, an Israeli born political activist – who works on behalf of Palestinians.

Ezra Yizhak Nawi was convicted of having sex with an underage Palestinian youth in 1992. In more recent years Mr Nawi has clashed with the Israeli authorities for his political activities on behalf of Palestinians.

Four of the five declared contestants Gay Mitchell, Michael D Higgins, Mary Davis and Sean Gallagher did take part in the debate on ‘The role of Uachtaran na hEireann’

All four participants stressed the need to repair Ireland’s damaged reputation internationally.

I didnt say you were criticising the IT. The question is whether any matters referred to in the article are factual or not. If they are not, it should be to Norris's advantage as it probably would be as seem as part of a ' dirty tricks' campaign him against him. I see from an additional comment from David Cochrane that quite a number of people have abandoned the campaign. In the absence of more information We can only speculate as to why that is .

Im just curious, why bring that quote over? Are we to put more trust in it because the guy owns a website? The speculation and dodgy sources ive seen over there with regards this story is offputting to say the least.

Campaign team seem to be alluding that there is more to come in this tale. Will wait and see
