Depends who it is. Pizza Hut or Dominos? No way their entire menu is made with delivery in mind and is quite expensive to sustain regularly if your tipping as well.

If its some non-chain place where delivery isn't their main source of business and aren't over-charging for their food I might.

Tipping in the delivery industry is such a strange social pressure.

    No - Never - I can't afford it

If it takes more than 45mins then I wouldnt tip but the majority of times it is within that so about €2.

    .

    45 mins
none of the places near me will deliver if its more than a 10 min drive away. 5 in some cases. though i think some places will go further but the delivery charges rises every few kms instead.

    _____________________________________________________________

ive known a few drivers over the years: i thought the delivery charge was to cover petrol? (which the shop has to reimburse you for?)

im not being stingy by refusing to subsidise cr*ppy wages (crappy wages is often the reason given for the tipping thing in EVERY industry where tipping has become the norm)
to me a tip is always a tip for special circumstances or eg. in snow.

i know its only a few quid but that all adds up to a few more quid people might not have to spare.
takeouts are a rarity these days though

I would always try and tip a take-away or hairdresser but not the tesco delivery guy.. I pay up to 5 euro for delivery so why should I tip, I am scappy?

What I never understood is why we tip delivery drivers / taxi drivers / bar staff / restaurant staff. They receive the same wage as most people in similar low skilled jobs, yet you don't tip someone in a shop or similar.

People will tip waiting staff for doing their job, even if it's a poor attempt at that, but say if someone working in a shop goes out of their way to help they wont be tipped. Something I never really understood.

I don't tip because society says I have to. If someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, fuck that shit. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

    This.

Why should people in certain jobs automatically get a tip because society deems it so? It really annoys me. They're doing their job and getting paid for it. You don't see me getting tips from customers in retail or when I'm working on events or etc. etc.

I know some people will say "well if you want tips, work in restaurants or in food delivery". **** that. I'm a damn hard worker and I don't see why someone who's working equally as hard (or less hard in some cases) than me should get tips just because they're in a different industry. I'm on minimum wage so I can guarantee that they're not getting paid less than me

That said, if someone really puts in an effort and does something beyond they're job remit or what they actually need to do to get paid, keep their job etc. then I will tip.

Pizza is €10 with free delivery and is €7.50 with our carryout discount

Do companies take us for fools??
That isn't free delivery, the delivery is built into the price

    I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a stingy bitch. I don't tip. Hell. I rarely tip in restaurants (and when I do, it's out of peer pressure unless the service was stellar.) Now before you scald me, hear me out;

I've always worked minimum wage jobs where tipping is not the norm. Salesperson in a shoe shop, cashier, secretary. I do my job and I do it well for minimum wage. I'm getting paid what they're getting paid - why should I pay them more for doing their job adequately when I have done as much for my working life...?

Yeah. I say: mind that bast'rd of a dog on your way back to your van there... it's the neighbour's & a right nasty little f'cker... he'll get around behind you & bite for sure... we've called the Guards twice but, sure, they do nothing.

Then I yell after them when they're almost halfway to the van: here he comes! watch out! he can smell the food!!

You would think €0.50 was a lot of money, after forking out €10/€20/€30 for food, woulda thought people would stretch to something.

Would think delivery drivers were fcukin minted or something.

Only is the change will be two euro or so, that way I won't feel like an idiot standing while they count out the money. Other times I just wait for it and don't care, depends on my mood really but the majority of the time I do yes :o

Used to deliver fast food. The tips were what made the job worthwhile. Furthermore, I worked for a place that did Thai food. As Thai is more "specialized" than most fast food, I found the tips to be better, and never had any trouble. I pity the guys delivering pizzas for these two reasons.

If you're renowned for not tipping, this will be noticed. Expect your food to be delivered later. Plus, with stuff like chips, a known non-tipper will have their "tip" taken from the bag in advance. And believe me, that's only "for starters". On the other hand, if you DO tip (even a euro), the driver will go out of his way to ensure you get your food as quickly as possible in future.

As mentioned, even a euro is much appreciated when doing the job (it's the gesture, if anything). And yeah, yeah, I know you're not *obliged* to tip. I had one guy take his food and say "eh, you get the delivery charge, don't you?" .. "No, mate, I do this job for free". Moron.

You see that really on takes effect if you are regularly getting takeaway from the same place. Often enough for them to remember you.

Also as said before they do get paid a flat rate and often the delivery charge aswell - their interaction with you is all of about 30 seconds while you pay for your food. So what exactly have they done to deserve a tip? Found your house without calling for directions (does not often happen), delivered within the promised time of the takeaway? I only tip a waitress in a restaurant if she has gone out of her way to make my experience a good one. You interact with a waitress over the course of on average an hour or more throughout your meal. They can make the difference by suggesting items, given better decriptions of the items, making sure you have everything you need while you are there without being in your face and annoying. There is enough interaction that they can make a difference to your dining expereince. A delivery driver takes a bag of food, puts it in his car and hands it over at the door? Why should I pay extra for that? Because some people think its stingy not to pay an additional 10-20% ontop of the already exspensive price of my food.

    No - Never - I can't afford it
even if i were to be a regular take out fan i have to say that the to steal a handful of chips or make sure to bring cold food to a known non tipper etc is terrible. a customer hardly owes anything - apart from the price of the food (and delivery charge which is often there)

its nice to be nice<- but its not so nice if its expected of you, it tends to feel more like an obligation you end up resenting

    I allways tip.

I don't order often, but if I do it's for 2 people + something snacky for myself when I get hungry when I play on pc.

So it's allways around 16-18 quid. I allways give 20 and say keep the change. A few fellas were like wtf?! Seriously?! Thanks!

In my opinion it's better to tip the young fellas that do deleveries, maybe next time when he will be bringing food to you, he will have your spot on priority, because it's not a cheap bastord living there. Plus it deserves respect already as he is actuolly working! Not sitting on his hole in estate agent 24/7 and looking cool with his idiot friends.

Trust me, speaking as someone who does the job, if you're ordering for the second time, you're being remembered. It's part of the job to have an extensive memory for who everyone is and where they live, and I know where I work we keep a detailed record of every order, the date, amount of money charged and the driver, as well as maps and directions and notes. I've never taken food or deliberately been slow, but if I have two deliveries, and I know one is a non-tipper and the other typically tips, it doesn't matter whose food came out ready first or who ordered first; the tipper is getting the food first. Also, for all the exclamations about how it's only 30 seconds of interaction, so a delivery driver can't have earned a tip, it's more than enough time for me to dread certain deliveries, as the customer is always rude or unpleasant, or doesn't have the money ready and has to go around the whole house figuring out who owes what and has neither the sense nor the courtesy to have done that in the twenty minutes between ordering and me arriving at the door. And for the record, I always tip generously. My thinking is that if I can't afford to tip, I can't afford to be ordering a takeaway. I know it leads to better service long term and a more pleasant experience all round, for all concerned. Not bad for a few quid.

I always tip plus if I'm paying with card I will give him the tip in cash. Don't trust that he would ever see it otherwise.

I just started doing deliveries around 2 months ago and was amazed at the amount of people who dont tip because I always did!

Now I get paid 5 euro an hour and the delivery charge on each delivery which is 2 euro and Ive never done more than 8 deliveries in a night,

So I get about 30-36 euro for the night, which is 5 hours work. Below minimum wage.

I would be delighted to get a euro tip! Scabby feckers who dont tip, and im not just saying that as a drive because I always did it! And the worst is that I have to call half the fukkers on my own mobile so I can get into their **** apartments etc!

Not that im bitter or anything...

Your gripe should be with your employer, they're the ones taking the p*ss out of you for working for half-nothing. The fact they're paying you a crap wage is not the fault of the average person ordering a pizza.

I don't tip but that is because I never get it delivered, I get off my ass and collect it myself!!

I never see my food deliverer because the butler always collects it as I am usually in the middle of a glass of brandy after a hard day supervising the diamond mines. Iris the maid prepares it and Betty the house girl serves it.

So if I order from a place once a year and dont tip they are going to remember me?

Also yeh 30 seconds is long enough for someone to be rude to you, but that is a brief moment in your life. What about all the people working in customer facing jobs (like shop assistants, phone customer service etc) who have to deal with people being rude and abusive to them for a lot longer than 30 seconds, earn minimum wage and do not get tips? Again you are not doing anything over and above what you have already been paid for? There is a delivery charge added to the price of my food so what exactly am I paying for? So I'm expected to give a driver 2 euro to ensure he does his job properly(ie delivery food in the correct order that the order was placed, or logically for a delivery route, and to not eat the food i am paying for?)

I'm not saying its not a sh*tty job. Im sure it is - but I still don't understand what the expectation of a tip is for?

I actually never tip anyone in this country :s Who exactly should i be tipping ? Taxi companys do most of the deliverys around here. Aren't bartenders/delivery boys etc on a wage or do they work for tips ?

I worked for 4 years as a labourer for just over minimum wage and never recieved any tips from ze brickies or plasterers. I'd consider tending 3 bricklayers much harder work than you'd get in any delivery/taxi/bartending jobs...

Fair enough if you can afford it.... but not everyones a ****ing banker.

So if I order from a place once a year and dont tip they are going to remember me?

Typically, yeah. Records will show it anyway.
Also yeh 30 seconds is long enough for someone to be rude to you, but that is a brief moment in your life. You're the one who mentioned the 30 seconds initially. If it's long enough for me to get the impression that the customer is a thundering arsehole then it somewhat undermines the assertion that it's an insignificant period of time and therefore the driver can't possibly have achieved anything.
There is a delivery charge added to the price of my food so what exactly am I paying for? So I'm expected to give a driver 2 euro to ensure he does his job properly(ie delivery food in the correct order that the order was placed, or logically for a delivery route, and to not eat the food i am paying for?)

Yup. If the driver earns a bit of extra cash by getting the tipper's food to them a bit faster, then they're going to do it. You can say that's not right all you like, but first of all, you'll never know if you're the second delivery or what order things went in, but the driver's responsibility to himself is to make the most money possible in a given night. I won't support anyone interfering with or eating the food, but in terms of determining delivery order, whether you tip or not is a contributing factor.
I'm not saying its not a sh*tty job. Im sure it is - but I still don't understand what the expectation of a tip is for?

It's not a bad job at all, but the pay is determined by the tips, and the flat rate pay is crap, as it presumes a rate of tips.

I tip when I'm paying cash on delivery but if I order online and pay online (due to having no cash on me) I can't tip them :/

Our local chipper has about four different drivers in the last month. So I supposed to tip each one and hope they remember me or I'll be getting slow service next time?

It's not a bad job at all, but the pay is determined by the tips, and the flat rate pay is crap, as it presumes a rate of tips.

    What happened to minimum wage?
And I realy doubt a lot of drivers are declaring to their insurance company they are doing this work, it's been on any form I've ever seen. Get in an accident and they'll have to lie to the insurance company I suppose
