I got one for my birthday from my sister a few years ago, the 3V card, it was great but I can't find it.
The system I have with my sister works out great, mainly because I don't buy things that often needing a credit card, but when it is needed, it usually isn't much.

If you open a bank account with Ulster Bank or Permanent TSB, you will get a Visa Debit Card, which is acceptable everywhere that takes credit cards. You can only spend what's in the account, so you can just put enough money in there whenever you want to buy something online. I started doing it about 18 months ago, and so far as buying new books is concerned I never shop offline anymore - it's a lot cheaper on amazon and book depository.

    No Artists' exemption there, eh?

I've been talking to people about the Artist's exemption, and it's even worse than the Tax thing. You have to prove that you have produced a work of imagination and cultural significance, so SF or fantasy is likely to be out automatically.

You have to send three copies of the book to the assessors, or if it's a painting or sculpture, you have to arrange a time for a certified expert to have a viewing and take video. No-one has ever got it for an e-book.

However, having said all that, I've just someone who got it for an incredibly crappy self-pub that has grammar errors in the title. He carries his exemption cert around with him!

Great characters, and it's very visual - I feel like I'm watching a sci-fi movie.

If you feel like doing a review, that would be a great line!

That's good to know about the tax exemption.

I'll have to apply for mine.

Did you do anything in particular to promote the book on Amazon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

Amazon are clamping down on shameless acts of self-promotion, so there's a limit to what you can do. I occasionally get involved in a discussion and try to slip in a reference to my book, but I find it hard to get too boastful about it. And I'm not at sure it is productive.

I wonder about twitter. People keep telling me that I should be twittering away about it, but I think most tweets are very boring, and I can't say I'd be tempted to check out a book someone had tweeted about. (I can't believe my spell checker is accepting those words).

I am planning to get postcards made that I can give people, something with the link written down.

If you are selling eBooks, social media is much more powerful than anything physical.

I read the sample and it was really good, ended at a good moment too, I just have to get my sister to let me use her credit card. Amazon won't accept laser and i don't have a credit card, thank god, because i know i am too irresponsible, my reaction would be along the lines of FREE MONEY YEAH! and then at the end of the month: so...just how do i go about declaring bankrupcy?

You should order a 3V card. They're free (they were anyway) and you just top them up whenever you want to use them. When buying online, just select Visa at the checkout and you're sorted.

    Congrats again

True, but I do want something that I can show or give. My parents don't really believe that I have written a book, just because they don't have one in their hands. But I agree that most sales are likely to result from someone clicking a link.

Great. Let me know what you think. Don't worry, I have a tough skin.

My reading of your book has been delayed by misplacing my stoopid ipod charger. Nightmare. Though it does mean I'm getting my GRR Martin prep nicely underway :)

Eileen, do try Twitter. It's a great place for meeting people, for talking about and promoting your work, and for generally having fun.

It can be boring, but it can also be incredibly funny, with links to some really good sites.

I'm on Twitter, and have about a dozen followers, but most of the tweets I get seem to be so inane I wonder if anyone actually reads them. I'm @eileen_gormley

    And another.

Though I fear I may occasionally (under-estimate?) be guilty of inane tweets.

Thank you! Now I have to think of interesting stuff to tweet, having complained about the boring ones.

Eileen, do you watch True Blood by any chance? Because...

    No. Should I?

I'm addicted to Dexter right now.

yes. yes a thousand times yes.

*cough* I mean....you might like it, not that I am a fan or anything. It is easy to get addicted, a lot of episodes end on a cliff hanger.

I can't wait for the next season of Dexter.

The opening scene in Season 4 of True Blood had
fairies planning to harvest humans to the dismay of the feisty heroine

There's the switched baby thing. Can't recall what they are called changelings I think, but never on that scale.

Though they do have habit of taking mortals where they should not stray.

Really enjoying it, Eileen. Not getting on as quickly as I'd like as have to get mine finished by 15th August. Love your characters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

Oh thank you. If anything strikes you as needing improving, let me know, I'm doing the final edits before it goes to the printer for the paperback, so now is the time to tell me.

    Oh, that's interesting.

Did the publishers e-publish it too, or did you do that yourself? I'm completely ignorant about how it all works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

They did it, and are responsible for some of the wonky formatting. I've since been getting an education in how to present documents with the least chance of getting bollixed by the printer/formatter. Basic rule, write with as few non-printing characters as possible, and be really disciplined about italics, bold and all forms of punctuation.

Right now, I'm doing a trawl for Irish-isms (car park, land rover, pot holes, rubbish, etc) and I'm also trying to butch Steve up a little.

How do edits work for the Kindle version? Do you resubmit it to Amazon and they distribute the new version to people who have the book?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,775 ✭✭✭EileenG

I submit it to my publisher and hassle them until they redo what's up on Amazon. I presume if you are self-publishing, you can alter it yourself whenever you want.

As far as I know, when a new version goes up, if you delete the one you've already downloaded to your reader and redownload from Amazon (this is free, no matter how often you do it), you get the updated version.
