Unlike many performance Volvo's that have gone before, this has agility on its side. It also has a six cylinder that has made Ward's top ten best engine list of 2011.

Would that be the first Volvo to have 6 ?

    Not at all!

The first model to have a six cylinder was probably back in the 1930's.

    Thanks!

    Always thought they were a 4 and 5 cylinder car :o .

You wouldn't see many of the six cylinders here anyway, so it's to be expected.

They had a V8 up until recently as well.

To up the power / acceleration figures in a Volvo to the same level as a BMW doesn't mean it will be a credible rival ;)

would the S60 not be a rival for the A6 and 5 series?

I think its a credible rival the thing about the Volvo is it stands out while been understated at the same time while the beemers stand out styling wise but every man and there dog has one if you catch my drift.

I love BMWs but I dont think Id ever buy one unless it was a M car and heres why most of the German cars sold in this country are fur coat no knickers 3/520ds with M sport kits 2.0 TDi 115bhp A4s with S line kits every the SE models are everywhere if I was paying 35/40 grand for a car Id want it to feel special but with everybody owning one it kind of loses its spark. Thats where the Volvo comes in it doesnt look as special but you know not as many people would have one and thats why its special. The beemer is the Queen of the prom good looking but no real substance the Volvo is the girl with Glasses she has a personally and her beauty is more subtle

ps yes I have been drinking

The S60 is aimed at the 3 Series/A4 market. The S80 is aimed at the 5 Series/A6.

Is this anything more than an S60 with a remap?

    it appears not

fair play to them an all but isnt this model fwd ? , I know volvo have awd models but not sure if the 6 cyl s60 is in there if so its nothing compared to the beamer , If i buy a performance car either the rear or all 4 wheels better be running , i dont just want a big box of torque steer and computers trying to keep the back end in line

Its AWD alright one of the few saving graces.I'm not going to get into an argument about it being a credible rival for an S4 or 335i (although it is an identication of the current S4's status that it gets compared to a 335i and not an M3,or did you choose 335i instead of M3 as you know this thread would be now 8 pages long with nothing but lols and slanderous remarks :D) but both those cars can also be remapped, also out and out BHP figures as the measure of a car is akin to mickey waving. :D

In the US it has been compared favourably already with the S4/335i in standard form. It's just from UK publications like Autocar that it will get slated due to their bias.

The AWD system is Haldex's latest one with torque vectoring ans is supposed to be very sophisticated. If it is not the match of the BMW then it certainly is the match of the Audi.

2.0 TDi 115bhp A4s with S line kits every the SE models are everywhere
    Isn't the 2.0L TDI either a 140 or 170 PS in the A4? Is there a 115 PS version?

Well hold on, the S4 has pretty much always (from the iconic B5 S4 anyhow) been wedged between the top tier 3 series and the M3. In the current era the excellent 335i is effectively an S4 rival.
The BMW-M competitor from Audi are RS cars, not S cars.

This Volvo may be a competitor in BHP (though still short of the 1.5year old B8 S4), but hard to see in what else? Be interested in Track results all the same.

They pumped the D5 up to 215bhp/440nm too. Although That engine is kind of neither here nor there. It doesn't have the refinement of the 6 cylinder 325d nor does it have the torque of the C250cdi even though it's larger capacity. Also wheel it's got decent power it's all going to the front wheels rather then rwd like the Germans.

I took a D5 r-design S60 for a good drive before and I actually really like the engine characteristics - especially the throaty sound and it revs quite well. Quite good to drive too but I think it would ultimately fall short of the rivals. Although I guess it fits perfectly in line with the S60 - offering a real alternative to the 3/C/A4 and their engines.

B8 S4 has been reduced to a V6 333bhp and repositioned and priced lower and competes against 335. M3 competes against RS4.
