What do you think of the National Anthem?

I spent some time with Scottish people a few weeks ago and by the end of it I could sing the Flower Of Scotland (don't ask) but I thought the song was great especially the lyrics and the song had proper meaning, which got me thinking about ours, and I know some people will give out about it being anti-English and the rest but I just think it's a bit rubbish. Barely anyone knows it properly and no one understands the lyrics, I just find it a bit boring and uninspiring, so I want your opinion on it?

(Before anyone points it out yes I know Flower Of Scotland isn't an official National Anthem, but it's as good as.)

It should be Gary Glitter's 'Rock and Roll Part 2'.

    Just because.

Yeah the Irish national anthem is a bit drawling and insisting on having the lyrics in Irish means most people just kinda sorta know the sounds without knowing any meaning behind it.

Say what you want about God Save the Queen but it has a cracking tune with a message that's easily understood.

It was originally written in English you know. A lot of people know that version.

    Shin a Fianna Fail,
    air taw fwee garneg herrin',
BWEEN dar slow, *the rest I don't know*

Yeah, I think it's pretty shit tbh.. I don't really see the point of national anthems anyway. They just seems so forced.. and don't even get me started on national flowers

Needs a bit more breakbeat and some nice sirens and gunshots.

    The Anthem is a statement.

When it is played at a venue people are supposed to shut up and then go home.

Nah you don't need that last line everyone starts claping during it.

I like our anthem. Sure the lyrics are warlike but loads of countries have anthems like that anyway.

It's miles ahead of that "Irelands Call" ****e in any case.

I've always loved God Save the Queen

I think Ireland's Call is only a slight bit better, but I can't pin down what's rubbish with that.

Are you serious? It's full of vim and vigour. I love it. We'll fight for our country, we'll protect our people, tonight we're going to war amid the gunshots and cannon fire we'll sing a soliders song? THAT'S AN AMAZING ANTHEM.

Well if they do they never sing it. Or if they do sing it they are drowned out by the idiots who can't speak Irish hacking their way through the first three sentences.

One of their best tunes. In fact, I love everything by Radiohead.

I can't articulate my thoughts on national flags so I'm afraid I'm going to have to say 'meh'.

Isn't the flour of Scotland the stuff they put on Mars Bars before they chuck them into the deep fryer?

At least ours is representative of a struggle for sovereignty....though I will agree the sentiment is lost these days

That's endlessly improved by the lack of lyrics.

It's a great anthem for identifying which players on the Irish soccer team were actually born in Ireland. As the camera pans across the players faces you'll see some singing it but others stone cold silent and looking slightly confused.

(the ones not singing are the Irish born lads)

Flower of Scotland is a great tune. Here's the Clancy Brothers' rendition.

How about A Song For Ireland for our anthem

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 274 ✭✭Eoin_Sheehy

Actually Song For Ireland is quite good.

If you exclude the Republican shouts in the Fields Of Athenry it's actually quite good, but it could never be used as somebody would surely shout "SINN FÉIN, IRA" in the middle of it.

EDIT: This video demonstrates the problem perfectly

    Hands down the best anthem.

Just another rubbish old rebel song as far as I see.

There seems to be a culture on boards recently whereby saying you're proud to be Irish or anything along those lines somehow makes you out to be an idiot.

I love our national anthem, it has a great tune and I love singing it. Its up there with Flower of Scotland. Wales have a great anthem though, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I reckon that as a sporting tune it is quite good. It builds to a crescendo at the end, gets everyone fired up.

Meaning wise; soldiers, neutral country, an army who are focussed on being professional soldiers but in small numbers, airmen who can fly propellor planes in formation and a navy who make sure fishermen have the right permissions and a government who know they need to call in the Brits if things get hairy. No.

Soldiers are we, who when measured against other soldiers are some of the best in the world, but we don't exist in great enough numbers to provide any deterrent to beligerents, thank God we're in NATO and the EU, pass me that claim form for hearing loss.

Is that the way it goes in English?
