Seltic???????

Are there two ways of pronouncing the word "Celtic"?
When referring to the race of people from which the irish, Scots, Welsh etc are part descended it is pronounced with a hard "C" KeltiK.
Why then do so many folk pronounce it "Seltic" when referring to the football team or the Cavan news paper The Anglo Celt.
Is this also correct.? Does any one care? Should i drink beer and watch telly?

That's interesting, up until now I always assumed "Seltic" was a corruption of the word. If I recall correctly the "Seltic" pronunciation is used by a Black & Tan Sean O'Casey's The Shadow of a Gunman, I always assumed this was an attempt by O'Casey to portray the English attitude towards Ireland as an ignorant one - maybe it was and he too wasn't aware of the correct pronunciation.

Never succumb to the beer and telly choice when issues like this crop up.

Otherwise the 'done' and 'seen' brigade will take over and pollute our language

as,regrettably, they seem to be doing

I was referring to 'done' and 'seen' .

I was inviting the poster not to succumb to temptation to ignore these issues and that they deserved attention, and not to, as he suggested he might do as an alternative, "drink beer and watch telly"
