Have you ever been hypnotised?

Watched the movie 'Stir of Echos' last night and it got me wondering about the whole area of hypnosis.

Years ago, I was on holiday and we went to a hypnotism show. I was picked out of the crowd along with a few others and yer man started hypnotising us one by one. Anyway, he got to me and I just wouldn't go under. He tried clicking his fingers twice more and nothing.

His went on to the next person and his assistant came out of the wings and hissed at me to leave the stage. I think I was just supposed to have played along or something.
Went back to my seat and the rest of the people left on stage all started doing whatever hilarious japes the hypnotist told them to do.

I went up to the assistant after the show and asked why I hadn't been affected and she muttered something about some people being more suggestible than others.

Have any of ye ever been hypnotised before? I'd love to know if those people who do embarrassing things on stage are really under hypnosis, or are they just playing along for the laugh...

I think the reason it didn't work on you is because of that thing....that scientific phrase, crap what is it. Oh yeah it's all bull****.

Hypnotist while abroad on holiday tired to to put me under but it didn't work . I was to aware of what was happening although I have seen people who would be considered sensible and rational be hypnotised and behave according to what the hypnotist told them to do .One thirty something girl I remember was told she was a sargent major and had to bark out orders at people in the room ,which she did very well to :D

Hypnosis is just relaxing a person to a higher form of suggestion. In some way or another we are all hypnotised minutely by reading a newspaper or by billboards, tv ads, etc.

And yeah I still think I'm a chicken.

In Derren Brown's book he says that a lot of what you see on stage when people are being hypnotised is people playing along, but that people are succeptible to suggestion and hypnosis. If you don't want to be hypnotised you cannot be hypnotised. You have to be open to suggestions, and the mind will indeed lapse into a succeptible state.

I was in the audience at a Keith Barry show where he hypnotised volunteers. When he was putting people in a trance my head got suddenly heavy, so hard to hold up. I had to throw my head back altogether to stay awake. I know I must have looked mental, but it was better than getting up on stage and being given orgasms by handshake!

Actually, maybe it wasn't; some of the volunteers really enjoyed themselves! ;D

One young chap returned to his seat in front of us and couldn't remember a thing! His mother was in stictches; I guess she's never seen him orgasm before :pac:

    Interesting...

Has anyone ever been to one of those places where they hypnotise you into losing weight/stop smoking?

Surely these people would be open to the whole idea and would therefore be more succeptible?

It's the power of pursusaion and suggestion .There used to be a well know hypnotist in Ireland called Paul Golden who was well known for getting hypnotised people to look for leprechauns outside on the streets after the show .

You've been hypnotised to say that, and one day in Tesco someone's going to click their fingers, and you're going to bark like a dog with your trousers round your ankles.

I went to self hypnosis classes for my first pregnancy (23 years ago!). I felt that i never quite went 'under' but it really helped me relax. The idea behind it was to 'suggest' that my stomach was numb when the contractions happen.

It didnt quite work that way cause believe me i felt the pain. But my first labour was 4 hours with a shot of pethadine (just in case cause I didn't know what to expect). My second labour was 3 hours and no pain relief.

I'm not a superhero and was quite prepared to have any pain relief that might be needed but I reckon that the relaxation of the hypnosis helped to shorten my labours.

Saying that I went to one of those hypnosis shows a few years later and felt myself starting to go under at the start of the show - the hypnotist tried to pick me out of the audience but I soon came to my senses! There's no chance I would go on stage.

I remember him, back in the day a mate of mine was selected with a few others to be hypnotised,he didn't go under but pretended he was, every time Golden turned his back on him to talk to the audience, my friend would make the **** motion with his fist and wink to the crowd, the crowd would laugh their heads off, Golden thought he was having his best show ever.

There must have being a lot of easy led people back then if half the storys are to be believed , like people climbing up scffolding of buildings looking for the little people .Sounds more like somebody on an acid trip tbh .

Try and not think of a pink elephant.

    Ooh, you're good :D

I've seen it being done to people I know and it looked pretty real, I'd be too afraid to do it incase my inner crazy came out on stage :pac:

Well the others did seem to be under-they were looking for pots of gold long after Golden was gone, just saying that my friend didn't go under.

In fairness, I've seen those shows where they supposedly orgasm... they always make that really fake noise you hear in movies. Real orgasms don't sound like that Meg Ryan scene in When Harry Met Sally!

Also, you see some people supposedly 'asleep', grinning like loons. They are clearly just play acting.

Oh aye ,wasn't refering to your friend and the hypnotist can hardly expect somebody to fake it just to make him look clever .

I was hypnotised once, I do remember certain things not everything though, my friend said that once i was under, he pushed me and i fell right back. I am usually scared sh*tless of falling and would grab onto anything or anyone to stop myself, she said that i just want down like a plank.

    Craziness....
