Leaving tips

I really don't understand this policy of being obliged to tip the waiter/waitress at restaurants and what not..??! They get their set wage, why should they more than any other people in service industries deserve a tip??.

I know some people say that if the waiter/waitress really goes out of their way to help you or whatever that they deserve something extra, tbh i cant think of a situation where they would deserve something extra. It would have to be something extra extraordinary imo (and i still cant think of an example! maybe i dont eat out enough)

If i was going to tip anyone in the restaurant it would be the person who actually cooked the food and put in the most effort. At the end of the day, the reason you go to the restaurant is primarily for the food isnt it..??

PS this is not something that has occurred to me recently due to the recession or anything, im 21 and ive always felt this way about tips and i think i'll stick by it unless anyone here can change my mind! :p

PPS and i'm not from cavan ;)

I've served people like you in restaurants before. You only get away with not tipping once.

Second time I spit in your food. It's not much but it makes me feel better.

Dangerous! One could aspirate on a bit of mince. And then be taken from the rear by Heimlich - your friendly waiter :D

but why do you feel you deserve a tip in the first place..??

I'll tip anyone that is friendly and helpful. no matter where they work in retail.
Anyone that works 9 to 5 dealing with ****head customers all day for crap wages deserves a tip

I will admit I dont understand why service staff in a restaurant deserve tips yet service staff in shops (on similar pay scales) do not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 112 ✭✭jacksprat

well if they cant deal with the **** wages shouldnt htta be enough to motivate them to get a better paid job..??

Having worked extensively in non food/drink service retail, the vast majority of companies do not allow their floor/front line staff to accept tips.

Because my wages were crap, in fact, in many establishments, tips were used to bring the wages up to a minimum level and because I was a great waitress. That's why.

    Except to you.

    Eh...students?

Anyhow there are plenty of well motivated, qualified people on the dole at the moment through no fault of their own. In fact, jobs in the service industry are hard to come by, that guy or girl serving your food could have a list of letters after his or her name.

In the midst of a recession, your comment is just rude.

well you would want to be a bit touched or very financially stuck to work in a place that pays you less than the minimum wage!

more importantly, what exactly did you do to deservedly proclaim yourself as a "great waitress"..?!!?

Its not the customers fault that your wages are low. A great waitress would never spit on someones food no matter what the circumstances are IMO

People like you should not be allowed partake in civilised society.

Whether or not a person tips - they are paying for their food, and its their right to recieve food that hasnt been tampered with or spat on, ffs.

You are being paid an hourly rate, yes? Probably more on sundays. The food is already way overpriced. Where on earth do you get the assumption that you're somehow entitled to a tip from paying customers??

Do you tip the cashier at the bank? Do you tip that lady that checked you out in dunnes? Do you tip the guy who fixes your car?

You do not cook the meal. You merely carry it from the kitchen.

Your wages were crap because you chose to work in a crap paying job. As you've mentioned in your post, there is a recession. A lot of people are struggling to pay bills/morgages. What makes you think its their responsibility to ensure that you earn a good wage.

can someone please add some sort of poll to the thread about whether tips are deserved or something along those lines..??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,220 ✭✭✭maximoose

Very rarely tip anyone, anywhere. Occasionally if I get an exceptionally good waiter/waitress then I might. Don't see why anyone feels obliged to.

Diddlybit, I'd love to spit..not just a spit, but a full greener.. right in your face.

Write as much as you can on your arm and when the supervisor isn't look..... Oh! Leaving tips. Sure, if you don't tip you only a tight cnut.

i dont believe they are busting their asses! its pretty handy work in comparison with alot of other areas of work!

Also, i doubt that the majority of customers are "****ty" as you say.

You're not obliged to tip anywhere. If you want to tip, tip, if not, don't.

i'm just wondering why some people do seem to "feel obliged to tip" as i put it

As soon as there is any mention of a "service charge" on the bill, there will be no tipping.
Otherwise i tip, depending on how good the service was.
