If it gets to the stage where we are being invaded we are ****ed anyway because it probably means all the other powers in Europe at least are already gone.

So if your asking if we are capable of defeating someone whos already defeated Germany, Britain, France, Italy etc, then no.

Eh, have you not heard of the FCA?

They give out clothes, don't they.

who would be stupid enough to invade us anyway ? we owe everyone else 100 billion yoyo's, anyone who took over Ireland would then owe 100 billion yoyo's plus the 20 odd grand it would cost to invade us - so they'd get feck all only rain and end up 100,000,020,000 worse off ?

secondly the UK and US are our buddies and wouldn't allow anyone invade us.
sadly even though we call the brits names the truth is they already help out when our air corps planes aren't up to helping out drowning drug smugglers off our coasts. they's give us a hand in this case too.

The only plausible invasion of Ireland would be from Aliens.

Maybe you should type in "USA entering <INSERT COUNTRY HERE> airspace", you'd likely get about 10 billion results and one of the main reasons why the USA is now bankrupt.

You wouldn't get great odds on predicting how many AHers will respond to that.

our armed forces are mainly a defense force.
To basically go over to another country (a kip) and be like the local police. We are not a super power and never will be.

    Short answer: No, however.....

Why would someone invade in the first place? Surely the Americans aren't so stupid as to believe that there really are pots of gold at the end of a rainbow? Although this is the country who elected Bush jr. twice so.....
Besides that there's f##k all here worth taking thanks to the vikings/english/eu/germans/fianna fail w##kers etc.

Anyway if it does happen just look at our track record! We won an 800 year war involving invasion, genocide and starvation.

Whoever you are, bring it the f##k on!

    Party like it's 1798

    Why would anyone invade us?

And if they did, as history shows us, there would be centuries of resistance and rebellion.
Capture may be easy, but control would not.

Who would want to invade this country tbh and infact they probably more than welcome to. They couldnt do a worse job of running the country than our lot

Just like all these protests and strikes we're seeing against austerity measures and the IMF, aye, the "fighting Irish" are in full bloom right now :P

Stupidly Goverment's didn't invest much In the Defence force's, Thats why we have Aircraft Slower then WWII Spitfire's, As our main "attack aircraft".

I Thougth we Just got a Bailout of 85 Billion?, Surly The goverment could buy some Harrier jets That were scrapped from the RAF? They couldn't be dear to buy.

We have a active army of around 8,500 - 9,000, They dont have much equipment if you ask me, They have some small tank's, and maybe some other not very useful weapons.

The navy over the years, is the only Branch of the Defence force's That has been invested in, We currently have 8 Navy ship's defending out water's, But They cant fire Missile's, Only use gun's.

I Know you may be thinking, "Why do we need all this?", But seriously 21st century, We need a proper air force, And a proper navy, To actually DEFEND our airspace + Costal water's.

If you type in on google - "Russian bomber entering uk airspace" A Load of news reports from this year and last year will appear, A Russian bomber even went over The republic, Or somewhere near irish airspace.

So Do you think we need a proper Air force and navy?

Well, Robit, when it comes to starting "Aren't the Irish shít" threads, you remain a paragon of consistency and predictability.

we have got spuds thats all we need, but ye if we get attacked we are *****d until we get help from our yank and brit freinds we are indeed a bitc* nation when you think about it, theres no need for an irish army they dont do anything anyway not where im from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,233 ✭✭✭robman60

We're fine. Forming an army literally costs billions and we have more pressing issues atm.

Answer is that if we get invaded the other EU nations have to come to our defence under the common security and defence policy passed by the Treaty of Lisbon. So the Royal Air Force and Luftwaffe defend the skies above Ireland.

    No.
A quick check, a modern fighter jet (F-22 Raptor) cost $150 million. So, how many do we need to have a "proper" airforce? 50? Would you mind funding this out of your tax? Can't imagine a few top of the range subs or destroyers being too cheap either.
If our government started to invest in this, and have parades with them down o'connell street, we have even bigger problems than the bailout.

Heck, Austrailia or Argentina could invade us for all we could spend - and thats just starting with the "A's"
You forgot Angola and Algeria with their strong air forces and Navys that have landing ships.

We could probably take on the Albania Navy / Air Force, but would not have a prayer against ground forces. Let's just be thankful that the Azerbaijani Navy is confined to the Caspian Sea. And that Armenia doesn't have a Navy. But if any of them borrowed boats or hijacked a ferry we're screwed.

Most of the other A's we could probably keep at bay.

The Åland Islands are demilitarised so I suppose that's one less worry.

    Feasible attacks on Ireland

    1. Terrorists
    2. Germany goes at it again
    3. British Re-invasion after BNP get elected
    4. Ireland hits oil and we get invaded by the USA
    5. Some religion claims Ireland is their homeland
    6. Ulster unionists go loco
    7. Rebels in Chad seek to undermine our peacekeeping efforts
    8. Republican dissidents stir up a hornets nest by killing a foreign diplomat
    9. Intel have secretly been manufacturing and stock piling weapons of mass destruction
    10. A small portion of Ireland declares independence from the Republic and immediately wages war (looking at you Cork).

And for every 1 person who says that there'll be 10,000 people saying that money should be spent on their local hospital/other burning issue of the day.

That bit walking around money was already spoken for I believe. Plus, according to people who know in the Military forum, it takes a large amount of manpower, resources, facilities, fuel, and oh, money to support/repair/train pilots/etc for jet aircraft.

Seeing as I was recently corrected on this, we don't have a Navy. We have a Naval Service. But they should at least have the capabilities of accommodating helicopters at a minimum. Firing missiles is well and good but you generally need to have someone or something, usually hostile to you, to shoot them at.

    I'm not :D

We should scrap the Naval Service and stop pretending about that and have a decent Coast Guard to stop various smuggling activities and police fishing. No one is going to invade us, the weather is too bad and we're broke.

I think that's fantastic news, since the Salthill Airshow stopped we need some decent displays if proper aircraft, Aer Arann 5 seaters plodding along don't cut it. Now if the RAF would send in a few Tornados or what ever they're tooling around in these days we'd have the makings of a few good days out a year.

No. We can't afford the former and we don't need the latter.

i'd rather be invaded and occupied than see another Brian Cowen again. when i was visiting my grandparent on the isle of sark i remember him telling me about how they almost got overtaken by one lad with a gun, from wiki:

    "One-person invasion attempt

In August 1990, an unemployed French nuclear physicist named André Gardes attempted a singlehanded invasion of Sark, armed with a semi-automatic weapon. The night Gardes arrived, he put up signs declaring his intention to take over the island the following day at noon. He was arrested while sitting on a bench, changing the gun's magazine and waiting for noon to arrive, by the island's volunteer constable"

    gas altogether

If any branch needs investment it's the Navy and the Air Corps as they both work together in life saving and drug shipment detection/prevention.

We have such a vast amount of sea territory that I'd say that they have a very tough time catching more than a minority of illegal shipments.

thats the thing i mean ye are good for nothing really a waste of tax payers money because if this country does ever get attacked there's nothing ye can do, it will be the brits and yanks doing the protecting.

what do ye do each day honestly? ye are the defense forces but ye stay on barracks all day training for what? peace keeping missions in that case join the UN.

invasion from whom?? if russia, iran or north korea were to invade us surely that would mean them coming west and having to go through germany, france, uk first and if they all fall i don't think us having 100 harrier jets will make any difference
