    Howdy,

I'm going to Ireland actually for the first time in my life... going to be in Dublin for a week.

My grandfather used to listen to Irish nationalist/rebel music continuously, God rest his soul... I heard lots of it when I was visiting his home as a child. He's passed on now. He immigrated to the US when he was young.

Anyway, when I am in Dublin, I'd like to go somewhere where I can hear this kind of music performed... you know, I is for internment and so on.

Any recommendations? Google wasn't terribly helpful on this one.

Sorry if this is excessively political sounding, but this is the music he used to listen to constantly, all day long, and I'd really like to go hear some of it live from the source.

    Thanks for any advice.

You probably won't find many places like that in Dublin. Or perhaps im being naive.

The Donegall Pass and Sandy Row areas of in Belfast have thriving traditional music scenes.

Don't know about 'real' rebel music in Dublin(plenty elsewhere) but O'Donoghues just of St. Stephens Green is a good place to listen to trad music.

    I'd suggest trying 1981.

    And those brave men,
Placed the bomb in the litter bin,
    And then they ran away
And they killed the women and the children
Yes they killed the women and the children....

Just stand on O'Connell Bridge and start singing, we'll all join in.

Uhm.... honestly, I dont mean this to be a political thread. It's just what my grandfather was into. There were lots of songs I heard in his house that I haven't been able to find on the internet, and he used to tell silly stories such as Irish prisoners strapping frogs to their feet and jumping over the walls of British prisons. Irish resistance to British rule was definitely the theme. He was born around 1880 believe it or not. Lived to be over 100. I'd just like to hear some of the music he used to listen to all the time, live.

Will check out the places that have been suggested.

If you're coming to Ireland for the first time, it's probably best you know that quite a few things have changed since your grandfather was in Ireland.

The church has gone to sh!t- of course, it probably was in the thrust of its kiddy fiddling days when your grandpa was around.
People are a hell of a lot less tolerant of idiotic patriotism and its propaganda music which celebrates the use of violence.

Enjoy the scenery, the pubs, the attractions, but don't be drawn into that pseudo-political bullsh!t. I'd like to think that such thinking is dying out, albeit slowly.

We also have a forum for traditional Irish music.
However there would be quite a gulf between that and the kind of RA music or similar you're asking about.
That kinda stuff seems pretty crass in modern Ireland tbh. At least to my mind.
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=474 is the Dublin forum which should have suggestions for your visit.
