Nice one, saved me the trouble.

Yeah you gotta laugh at all these 'sources'. They're probably the cleaners in the Apple offices or something.

I'm running Lion now. It's just like Snow Leopard with extra bloat, just like Snow Leopard was like Leopard with extra bloat, and so on.

I won't be using Launchpad or Mission Control.

I wonder how many ways Apple think we need to access our Applications, from the doc, from the doc in a stack, in the normal Finder, from "Launchpad".... jesus..

I upgraded simply to future-proof myself.

Is doing a clean install recommended?
If so, how do I ensure that I keep all my iPhoto (location, faces, etc) and iTunes (e.g. ratings) settings? What files store this info?

Don't think you can as it's only available as a download from the appstore but I could be wrong.

You can do a clean install. Iphoto stuff is in the "iphoto library" package in your pictures folder.

iTunes stuff is in a folder in your music folder. You need the iTunes XML file as that contains all your metadata.

I'd advise you to back up with tome machine to an external drive first. That way you won't lose any of your data.

I didn't bother clean installing from Leopard to Snow Leopard and it seemed fine. I broke over a decade of tradition and the sky didn't fall in!

Just do a Time Machine backup of your stuff!

I haven't done a clean install since 10.2 or something. Never had any problems. And since SL Apple use a new form of upgrade that replaces your old system folder, greatly minimising the risk of problems.

When this new update comes will I lose all my programs I have already?
E.g. Microsoft Office 2011, Aperture etc etc?

No. That would only happen if you did a clean install.

    Sweet, thank you.

Really looking forward to this update, suspense is killing me.

To be fair Snow Leopard is Leopard with less bloat. I use Alfred to launch my apps so I can't see Mission control being much use. I'm still upgrading though.

Very true. I dropped 6GB+ by installing SL.....

Fair point. But generally, for all these upgrades, I still have a desktop, with a dock, where I launch my favourite applications..

The only thing that has changed for me is that I have a ton of extra crap that I never use...

Genius playlist, PING, Launchpad, coverflow, expose, 3d reflective dock with silly swoosh thing.... come onnnn.

Apple have lost the plot, or should I say, Apple are very conciously going in a direction which I don't care for. Simplicity and elegance are being bumped to the side in favour of novelty and decoration.

    OSX is becoming B L O A T E D

I upgrade because the software I use within OSX, ends up dropping support for older Operating Systems, as it clambers to keep up with new releases. I would gladly use PANTHER, if my favourite software supported it.

I wouldn't moan about these f***ing upgrades so much if Apple addressed some of the really obvious shortcomings of OSX... like the tiny, confusing traffic lights that are too small to click on comfortably, or the flakey Mouse&Keyboard Shortcuts in Expose/MC that get broken even when there is no conflict.

Same with the iPhone, they try to "keep things simple", by offering only a dozen crappy text tones, while bloating the OS with other useless "features".

Anyone who thinks all of these OS upgrades are really essential needs their head examined. It's a trap. And it's getting tedious.

Each to their own. Although I'd say those that would prefer to continue using Panther would be a significant minority among those who enjoy some/all of the features/enhancements that have gone in since. Feature bloat is far less of an issue than under-the-hood bloat - new features can simply be ignored if you don't like them - I doubt that I'll use Mission Control, for example, but the fact that it is there won't bother me. And you can't eliminate under-the-hood bloat and keep legacy support for everything at the same time. You can go back to an old-style dock with:
defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES; killall Dock

OS upgrades are not essential for new UI bells and whistles but they are essential for supporting new hardware, fixing bugs and patching security vulnerabilities. I can't imagine how many security holes Panther would have compared to Lion.

Any more rumours on a release date for Lion?

I heard from an Apple supplier late last week that it may be a couples of MONTHS before Lion actually hits the shelves. Anyone hear anything like that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,235 ✭✭✭Odaise Gaelach

I haven't heard of any plans at all to release Lion in brick-and-mortar shops. It's set to be released this month for download via the App Store.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,684 ✭✭✭waynegalway

It will be available on disc in apple supply shops. I asked because I have a poor connection at home with a low download limit and so I want a disc rather than a download. It was confirmed to me that it will be available on disc.

Well, a particular Apple dealer in Galway informed me otherwise...I'm only passing on the message.

I certianly hope it's available on disc, otherwise I don't think I'll be able to get it. (I have a 1GB download limit from VF, and the speed is 0.4-0.5mbps on average....it would take nearly a full day to download it and it would cost me a lot by o=going over the limit)

I read that Apple stores will allow people to download it in the shops.

what, and then burn it on a disc to take home? Hopefully the stores will have enough cop-on to have a rake of them burned to speed up the process.

More likely that they'll let you transfer it to a usb stick. Burning discs are on their way out for Apple......

No, it definitely will be out before the end of July. AppleInsider is saying it will be out on Wednesday, but Apple have traditionally released new versions of OS X on a Friday.

He wouldn't be privy to that information. He was obviously just assuming it would be on disc because previous versions have been. There was an email from Jobs a while ago in which he basically said "it's download only, tough". I'm sceptical how this will work, but Apple tend to stick their guns.

    I have a late 2007 MacBook. 2ghz dual core, 4gb of ram.

Would I have any issues running Lion? I don't have a multitouch trackpad sadly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,710 ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

I assume that's a Core 2 Duo, yeah? It should be okay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭fasty

Developer preview ran fine for me on that model Macbook with a 2.2GHz C2D with that much RAM.

If I buy a new mac after Lion is released, will I need an interent connection to do a system wipe and restore? Will only 10.6 come on DVD and 10.7 be a download?

Lion should come preinstalled on any mac bought after the release date. It will be specified on the spec sheet on the online store. If not on the release date then maybe week or two after.
