Because smokers are cooler than non smokers.

The fact they are giving themselves cancer suggests a few butts wont keep them awake at night

Sure they're a fire hazard, surely burning rubbish is more harmful to the environment than a bit of biodegradable litter?

I'd imagine the people that throw their smoke buts on the ground are the same people that throw other litter on the ground.

I smoked for 16 years (Jesus! Never worked that number out before... I'm only in my 20's) and always stubbed my smokes out on the side of a bin and stuck them in there. I also put all my food wrappers etc in bins too though.

than a bit of biodegradable litter?

Supposedly that's a myth. The plastic in the filters can take years to decompose.

I just throw my butts down a drainage hole if their are any "cigarette bins" around.

Fine, at worst they are slightly less annoying than chewing gum on footpaths. I don't smoke too often anymore but when I do I do get rid properly.

I'm a smoker. A heavy enough smoker for my age as well. I have had to put smokes in my pockets and handbag to avoid throwing them on the ground before.

I hate when people do it. It's very rude and is the exact same as litter.

I also smoke rollies with a cardboard roach.. so even if I did fling em on the ground they biodegrade fairly fast.

I put out the cigarette on the ground, and then eat the butt! High in fibre.

    Am I the only one?

I rarely smoke anywhere that doesn't have an ashtray.
    Home, pub etc..
but when I do, I always make sure that the butt is fully extinguished and then I put in a bin.

Biodegradable or not, it is litter..

I never understood people just flicking them on the street

That's one hell of a system..
And you twist the mickey off every time you have a cigarette?
    In public?

I've never heard the tip / cherry called "the mickey" before.. I'm way too south county Dublin for my own good

Bugs the hell out of me. Spent a while outside a hospital recently where all the smokers were gathering, and the only thing more depressing than the amount of people in hospital gowns coughing and spluttering as they shuffled to the place then lighting up, was the amount of scumbags who dropped their butts etc on the ground, even though there were two of the thin bins with the ashtray tops on them within a couple of feet. One dopey bint went as far as walking to the bin, putting the end of her cig out on the top of the bin on the little grate, then flicked it away onto the ground which took more effort than leaving it on/in the bin. I've also known some of the muppets who do this to also complain about certain pub's smoking areas being filthy.. Mind boggling stuff.

jeasus you don't have to be a smoker to get cancer. no one on my side of the family ever got cancer and they were all heavy smokers and lived a long fulfilling life.

well it is a dirty habbit but so is gorging on mac donalds food and having to use the toilet, well i always dispose of my cigg buts in the bin as the filters take forever to dispose themselves. no point in throwing the butts on the ground if there is a bin close by imo.

As en ex-smoker I used to chuck 'em on the ground... the smell of burning fag ends in a bin is gross.

Whenever my flatmates girlfriend comes over she covers the balcony in butts. I can kinda understand why people do it on the street, it's an asshole move but, you quickly move on and blend into the crowd. But when you're a guest in somebodies home and the only one there who smokes, it doesn't take a genius to realise who is littering my apartment.

She probably doesn't even think about it. Its just a bad habit that you get into. Not excusable though.

But if you think that's bad, I have a mate who used to flick his ashes on the floor when ever he came over. He was told to stop it or GTFO.
