Didnt happen to me but my friend who was standing right next to me got caught with pills and a bit of hash. The gardai just took it off him and that was it. Never heard of anyone getting done for having small amounts.

Just trying to establish if you felt the need to take (legal) drugs to enjoy yourself - cause for a while there it seemed like you were saying that you didn't.

BTW, alcohol for most people will have a bigger effect on their perceptions than a bit of hash.

I strongly suspect that ap1986 is a Troll who's had more drugs than I've had hot dinners. (S)he's incredibly off topic and loving the attention.

OP I think you were hard done by to get a criminal record over a bit of hash. I don't do any drugs myself but I don't have that holier than thou attitude some do. As someone said earlier there has to be some kind of consistency brought to convictions.

I sh!t you not: The Garda's name was Michael Stone. (Maybe not Michael but the surname is correct)

Every Witness person, in court that day, got convicted. We weren't canny enough to give false names/addresses.

Prosecuting people for taking drugs is sadistic. Just because it's the law doesn't mean it not a fantastically stupid law.

These drug laws are FAR too draconian. Dealing large amounts - maybe, but smoking a few harmless cannabis joints or whatever - no. It's beyond fcuking stupid imo.

Alcohol is FAR worse when you compare long term abuse in comparison to something like cannabis. Don't see too many joint smokers smashing up Temple Bar of a saturday night either.

In NYC they cracked down on minor drug posessions and it lead them to arresting high profile crime figures

A friend of mine had a small amount of weed taken from him at Oxegen this year and nothing was said about it at all.

I think what concerns the law makers in Ireland is that cannabis is considered a gateway drug to other drugs. When people go to secure a hash deal often ( I am told ) the seller or pusher might have more illicit drugs to sell e.g. cocaine, ecstasy tablets LSD or even smack but to name few. And pushers being pushers would offer some fantastic bargins just to get the user started ( hooked ) on something new.

but it only becomes a gateway drug thanks to some dealers who are assholes. The lawmakers could quite easily wipe out the need for drug dealers

I could make the same accusation against alcohol pushers (publicans) and soft drinks. You might go in there and have beer or worse spirits, pushed on you.

    So the problem is prohibition.....

That is such an urban legend. When I was a mad drug user back in the day, other drugs were never pushed on me, not once, not ever. As for special prices, maybe I went to the wrong dealers.

I was nabbed for possession of a small bit of hash at the Witness festival in 2003. When I finally got my day in court, in Naas, I (along with all other festival nab-ees) was convicted and, consequently, have a criminal record. I felt this was harsh, especially since a middle-aged man got the probation act, just before my conviction - He smashed a bottle over someone's head.

I'm not here for pity (I know many of you will be delighted) or to moan. I just wondered if that trend has continued ever since. Presumably every one who gets caught for similar offences at Witness/Oxegen get the same treatment every year.

    Your stories please.

FYI: I have not had any altercations with Gardaí before or since.

I feel sorry for you man, I mean how bad are things when you can only get a small bit of hash before a festival.

It was often a real trial to get them to part with their drugs at all. I've never met anyone all to willing to share drugs.
