500 euro on a vocal mic ?

    So,
    If ye had 500 euro to spend on a vocal mic what would ye go for ??
    I have an SM7 but would like to have an alternative for a different 'colour' ..

    Any thoughts?

    take a look at the mxl genisis tube mic. you can pick one up for around 4/500 depending on where you shop. really lovely vocal mic that adss plenty of character.

    or if you want something a little more transparent then look at the akg C412 (smaller brother of the 414)

    The Sontronics Saturn is certainly worth a look.

    Some of you will have met Trevor Coley who owns the company at our event in Westland a while ago.

    As a dealer it instills confidence in me that we can call the company owner up on his mobile if any issues arise (none so far!)

    what price do they retail over here? cheapest i could find online was nearly 700 euro!

    Yes they are a bit over 500 ok - however there's always a deal to be done !

    Any experience with one of the c214's? Thinking about picking one up at the end of the summer when I do an upgrade of some of my gear. Finding it hard to find any real info online from people who've used them, alot of speculation but not alot of first hand experience.

    Thanks for the replies lads!
    Liking the MXL, seems nice. Also the Saturn looks impressive, but I have my reservations bout a mic with that many switchable patterns (although I have no reason to doubt it !). Can I get the Saturn for 500 ??? ;)
    Reading mixed reviews about the AKG, 412s + 414S, have heard em too and I dunno if there is much of a difference between the 414 and a considerably cheaper mic.

    Having quizzed AKG myself about the 412 the 'wee brother of the 414' is pure marketing - they're very different beasts.

    Changing polar patterns is a relatively simple process - it's the relationship between the front and back diaphragms , so nothing to be wary of.

    I don't expect you will get a Saturn for 500 but also you will get cheaper than 7 !
