Competitive eaters gather during the 2011 Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island on July 4 in Brooklyn. Joey Chestnut won the men's competition by eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes, marking his fifth-straight win in the annual competition.

This guy looks ok, they are normally huge. I always find it funny when they call eating contests 'sport' and refer to themselves as atheletes...

I think at least some of these 'competitive eaters' make themselves vomit soon after ingesting their competitive effort. I was listening to an interview with Sonya Thomas a couple of nights ago on BBC radio. She dips the hotdog buns in some type of liquid (forget) to aid the fast eating.

Anything shown to a famine-stricken country from a developed world wouldnt impress them too much.We have food.They dont.

I know its awful for the third world but this is just rubbing it in their faces.

I was there on Monday for the event. The women's competition was first, utterly savage and surprising when you see the scale of these women they are all rater petite. In the men's competition the majority of them are rather large over 6" and relatively rotund. One competitor spewed after 10 or so dogs which undoubtedly affected the athletes around him but from the get-go there was no doubt Chestnut would reign supreme he's in a class of his own. Surprisingly after witnessing the carnage I had a craving for a hotdog. Would recommend a Coney island trip for anyone who visits NYC on the 4th of July seeing the pinnacle of our modern civilization for myself instilled a great deal of belief for the future of the human race, if a man can dispatch over 60 hotdogs in 10 minutes then surely world peace is only a whisker away.

A former gym instructor's belly has gone from flat to fat from training to be Ireland's champion eater and trying to make food eating a pro-sport here. Neil Thomas from Dublin has gained around 3st since taking up eating as a sport.

"Thats a side effect to it," he told The Star, adding that his eating name is Glutton Number 1. "I'm now proud to call myself a fat, gluttonous, eating machine," he said. "Part of the training for competitive eating is stomach stretching - so you can increase capacity. You must eat a huge amount of food as fast as you can. It isn't the healthiest sport to participate in but it is addictive. I used to be in pretty good shape. It turns out, there is only one thing now that I'm passionate about, that is competitive eating."

'Eathlete Neil said he believes it could become a popular sport in Ireland, following it's popularity in the US where people compete for money. Neil, who trains at all-you-can-eat buffets in Dublin says he has yet to compete for money, but has already done some competitions with pals. "I've done ten double quarter pounders from McDonald's in 18 minutes. That's 4,400 calories, and that's my greatest feat so far," he said. "It's a sport that has enjoyed massive success in America and I want to bring it here to Ireland."

Neil has set up a Facebook group called the Irish Federation of Competitive Eaters.
