If the outbreak is rapid and catches the majority of the population unawares then expect here to be large caches of fuel and food ripe for the pickings. Assuming you have a safe unobstructed route out of the city/town then I would take a large 4WD vehicle (and as per Manic Morans suggestion strap a bicycle to the back). It would be important to ensure that this vehicle had some sort of winch on it to help clear the inevitable wrecks and obstacles that you will encounter. It is important to note that in such a situation the undead will not be your only concern, desperate panicking people will more than likely try and relieve you of your transport which would be another plus for a large vehicle over a bike in this regard.

Ok a couple of points there; The Winch is a very good idea. But you do need to know how to use them properly and have time to set them up to do this properly. They are also very dangerous if you dont know,or over load them.A snapping steel cable under strain is as leathl as anything. It can physically whipsaw a person in two,or make complete ****e of your vechicle as well.
As to keeping your vechicle and supplies and what not.The best advice is avoid the panicking mobs and main arteries out of your city.IF you have to get out of Dodge in a hurry. The old adage is have a plan of threes.

That means three plans to leave your location in the city to your
destination or refuge. The plans must be able to stand on their own without support from each other.IOW say the roads are blocked out of Dublin, how else could you get out?Could you walk along the railway tracks North or South?Could you get a small RIB and if need be cruise down the old canal ways out of Dublin?Or could you use your 4WD to literally if need be bash thru a length of back gardens to get to a clear stretch of motorway or use back lanes to do so? You might want to considering staying put and hunker down until the inital chaos subsides abit.

Also, you want to be able to easily "up armour" your 4wd with pre made mesh or steel panels. That could preclude some modern designs. Its one reason military 4wds still have very boxy designs, like the Landrover,Humvee,Gwagon. It is easy to hang armour on them if need be.

    [
TBH using a bike for lugging more supplies is only an advanced form of "bakpack survivalism" IOW the folk who belive they will carry everything they need on their backs to survive whatever calamaity. Those who preach this,I think have never actually done this in real life.I tried this once with my Bergen and it weighed over 90lbs with only a quater of what I needed. I'm relatively fit,but with 90 lbs on my back I wasnt able to totter much more than a few hundred yards.
Now chuck alot more onto your bike and chinzty little trailer..Like maybe 200lbs.[The Vietcong could put over 300lbs worth of gear and supplies on a old Pugeot bike and push it along jungle trails.] But what happens if you are jumped ?Can you bike out quicker with all that gear?
Your best bet would be to pre cache gear along your route to your safe haven wherever that is.
Another thing is ..You should try a load up the Bug out Vechicle [BOV] drill one day.Even with everything vital and prepacked and say 2hours to load up you will hardly have room to fit in you and the significant other.
One survivalist did it in the US for a years suply for a family of three. He needed a fourty foot truck!!!..Not a very discrete survival BOV..
So maybe you would want to leave earlier,or later when it has died down abit??

It is also important to note that if the outbreak lasts more than 12-18 months it really doesn't matter what the initial conditions were like or the remaining fuel supply, you are going to be pedaling everywhere by this stage. This is because the fuel in the tanks/petrol stations/depots will have gone bad (yes, petrol and diesel do have a use by date) so make sure to factor this into your plans.

Very true, but if you are a smart bear, will you have pre cached fuel and put fuel stabiliser in it as well??;) STA Bil fuel preserative will keep fuel useable for 3to 5 years. However, you wont be cruising around the place,or going for a drive post Z day..At that stage either things have gone totally tits up,and then maybe a horse or bike might be in order.Or we will be hombrewing fuel or diesel.Or using wood burner motors.

    To summarise:
Slow infection/early stages: get into your 4*4 and away from the major cities before the masses
Leave VERY early.IF you can and there isnt a lockdown on the contaminated areas. Then figure out maybe a second plan of three.

Slow decline/middle to late stages: Only viable option is a bicycle due to lack of fuel and road conditions.

Possibly better then to 4x4 out as it might be all over too?
Fast infection early stage/middle stages: 4*4 once again
Anything over 12-18 months: Unlikely any motorised transport will work after regardless of volume of remaining stocks (unless you are able to make fresh bio diesel)

Very possible, but also bio diesel or bio ethanol or wood burner can be considerd. But again who is going to be road warrioring around the place?

**** a default vehicle. Endlessly looking for fuel, noisey etc.

I'll stay on foot and solo.

Transit van with bull-bars on the front. Easily modifiable to hold a plough on the front and you could sleep in the back, easy to store food and could carry a bicycle in the back in case of running out of fuel.

Thats like a Zoolander truck, it needs to be at least 3 times bigger then that.

Why you acting so messed up towards him?

something practical like a van so you can hide in it. Preferably 4wd.

once you got out of a populated area and ran out of fuel then a bike would be handy to get you to your eventual destination.

Next time your driving through the countryside take note of all the diesel tanks you'll see on farms. As long as your driving a diesel your never more than 5 miles from some ones private stash.

There’s even a special firewall compartment in between the engine bay and the cabin for extra protection.

I think this is an awsome vehicle.

    busk.jpg

I dont thnk you need armour plating against zombies (they are falling apart!). If I cant claw my way through something, then they wont be able to either.

Advantages: Lots of them avail raound the country, high windows, secure sides. Sized for irish roads. Can be converted to be mobile safe house / command centre / hospital / etc. Lots of room in luggage area for equipment etc. And it runs on diesel (avail at any local farm)

Parts will be fun over here too.You need speed and anti personel protection rather than armour protection.

    Its all realitive really.
Really depends on your environment for the best form of transport.
If your in the middle of the countryside i would prefer the 4x4 with heavy duty bull bars.
Middle of Templebar when the s**t hits the fans im sticking to me own two feet and once out of cobblestones and windy, narrow streets i probably would grab a bike but mostly because it would be the easiest thing to commandeer. If a car was sitting there, engine idling and i'd 10 sausage munching lads eyeing up my padded rear end i would certainly go for the car.
If your talking an "I am Legend" scenario though and day to day living i would probably have several forms of transport dotted around the area with easy access and all pointing to a clear escape path.

The British army are offloading a pile of vehicles at the moment, so if anyone has fifteen grand or so knocking around, a privately owned tank could be yours! It may get three miles to the gallon, but at least nothing will stop you for those three miles. No road tax either, military vehicles are exempt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,867 ✭✭✭Tonyandthewhale

I'd initially take the bike as a bailout vehicle to get out of town because I've got 8 decent bikes in my house and I know how to use them and keep the running forever and obviously I don't want to get caught in traffic in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

In the long run I'd try and set up a base somewhere remote and keep a diseal 4x4 there prepped and ready to go in case I got surrounded and needed to bash my way out. A jeep or something would be handy as well for picking up bulky supplies.
Everyday toing and froing and scouting and such would be done by bike, cyclocross bike preferably since they're designed to be carried over obstacles and ridden both on and off road, much faster and more efficient than a mountain bike too.

all that armour on it though, and ye dont get a lot of mileage from leccy power either, i'd guess about 20 maybe 30 miles at a push. Not up to speed on how effecient they are but last i heard the batteries get about 50 miles before they need recharging.

But what the hell, it almost put's Mad Max's V8 interceptor to shame.. almost :)

I think the newer cars will do 100-150 on a charge. It depends on the car and how it's utilizing the electric motor. Some are only made for short stints to rest the combustion engine some are made to run a bit longer on the battery.

Seeing as someone's already posted about the marauder, I'm from the country so its a case of utilize what you have

    Throw sheep at them

Or lure them to your farm and drop them in the silage pit, 40+ foot deep so about the height of a six story building roughly, drop in a bitta lime and a few matches, job done until the next batch :D

Or if all else fails, get your cutting gear out and go at them in yer massy ;)

Top gear showed that the Toyota Hilux was indestrucable, specifically the mid 80's diesel.

I imagine that there will be large feul reserves, as most people will be gone.
This also can double as a base/housing. It is a mobile fortress that can push road traffic out of the way, while giving protection to occupants/residents. One section of the container could be kept intact, for fresh water supplies.

It would also allow for motor bikes to be attached, which give quick mobility for food/ammo runs

I think we need clarification on this issue, I've shot an email off to Topaz asking them for some information on how much fuel would be on the island of Ireland at any particular time.

Thinking diesel there is no shortage, as biodiesel is relatively easy to produce. Also remember that 99% of the population is gone. Using a couple of hundred litres a week is not going to dent the stocks. Each fuel station has thousands of litres of fuel

We've seen fuel shortages in the UK when they get a rush on the pumps and they have open borders, no apocalypse in sight and probably huge fuel reserves.

I put the question, does Ireland have a big fuel reserve or do we use good transport networks and efficient management to keep fuel coming in as needed to save on storage costs.

I'm not sure how often a petrol station get's refills (should have asked that too ) but if it's once a week then we could run out pretty quick. Petrol station aren't going to shell out more money than they need to on fuel reserves when they can order more fuel and have it delivered the next day.

It's a Japanese manufacturing technique called "World Class Manufacturing or lean manufacturing.. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_world_class_manufacturing
It means you don't stock any more product and parts than you actually need so there's no need for stocking more raw material than you need at any particular time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

one thing to remember about Bio diesel is that the engine needs to be sorted out to run on it, biodiesel is made using ethanol and that can perish rubber seals, most new engines are capable of running on biodiesel, but the technology can be a bit beyond the backyard mechanic, something like a merc 5 cylinder would be easier to work with but apparently they have 17 rubber seals which need to be replaced

While tanks are the strongest vehicle you can get your hands on they're not exactly user friendly. If you don't know what your doing you could easily get it stuck, if it breaks down it's going to be a bugger to fix and it will eat through fuel at an alarming rate.

Green diesel will be spread throughout the country as many farmers will have their own supply. If there's a run at the pumps they could dry up leaving only the large stores which are designed to move large amounts of fuel between large containers and have loads of security (not just people security) I would say it could be difficult enough for someone that doesn't work at one of these plants to actually get the fuel out safely and if there's no electricity probably next to impossible.

Remember the reason that I chose that vehicle. It is a mobile fortress. You scavenge and move on. You could spend weeks in one place, in relative safety and only move on once the supplies have been collected.
If you run out of fuel, you still have a relatively safe base of operations.

Food wise Ireland is a good place to be but, in all reality, fuel is always going to be a problem on a small island nation. All vehicles are going to run into this issue, as some stage.

A Bicycle does not really count as it is not that fast and provides zero protection.
