    Missed it
It's on the market, pretty sure it's free.
@Ben - sounds like you have gotten sorted. The CF ROOT KF2 is the kernel. As Villain Rom is based on KF2 firmware, Pulsar is saying that it is most likely to work best with the matching kernel, when 1.4 came out first KF2 kernel wasn't available and the KF1 seemed to work fine. As a general principle it seems logical to try to use the same build number four firmware, kernel, and radio/modem.

How are you finding it? Only thing that bothers me is the browser scrolling being a bit laggy. I installed the fix, but after that my phone kept force closing after phone calls.

Getting invalid index when browsing. I am not sure if this is down to weak signal. i will see if i get this back to dublin. Google works but then search result link will not load.
It has stalled a couple of times ob reboot.
Lagging browser has not been an issue since fix.
will be looking for another rom soon.

After the last post, browser was annoying me again, so tried the fix again. The only problem with the browser was that scrolling through web pages was jumpy. Smooth scrolling back again now after fix, hopefully phone process won't die after calls this time.....

Hi Zagato, I got fixed up all right. The Villain Rom website is very helpful and the process is relatively straightforward. Happy out with everything now except the battery seems to be dropping faster than I'd like but I'll wait a few days to be certain about that.

I use Dolphin HD browser so haven't experienced any lag issues. Is the tweak not just for the stock browser?

    Ben

Getting this phone during the week. Have a quick question, and keep in mind I know next to nothing about Smartphones. What are the benefits of rooting your phone??? It won't brick the phone will it?

Also is 1 gb enough for someone who will be using the net, email and apps??

    cheers

One of the main advantages of rooting is you can use apps that require root access, like AdFree for example (which has stopped working for me recently but I'll assume they'll fix it soon)

Just wanted to point out, I got my USB OTG CABLE!!

Have to say this is a must accessory for anyone with a SGS2. Tried multiple flash drives and they all worked perfectly and was able to play 1080p videos files.

Also tried a mouse and to my surprise it worked aswell, A little mouse actually popped up on the screen. It was great playing angry birds with it.

I got mine last week, didn't think to try a mouse... I did plug in a card reader and was able to flick through 12MP images from my camera, really fast too, no lag. :D

Just plugged in a basic old Microsoft optical mouse, worked no problem. Not sure if I'll ever need it... but it works. :D

I've an iPhone 3GS and am looking to upgrade in next couple of weeks. I hear the iPhone 5 won't be here until October is that right?. Worth waiting for or should I get this Samsung S2 phone?. Opinions?.

All personal taste, if your big into your apple products then wait if your open minded then move... I doubt what apple makes will be a huge amount better.

Where did you order this from? Can you post a link? I ordered one a few weeks ago, got it last week but it was the wrong type (A connector instead of B).

(Also, got my HDTV MHL adapter in the post today, gonna try that out later. It has a port for connecting the normal charger)

Thanks, ordered the second one there.

I got the official Samsung MHL HDMI adapter from here: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/genuine-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-mhl-tv-out-adaptor-p29427.htm

They have other cheaper ones on mobilefun, but I don't know if they have the power connector on them (need to plug your Samsung charger in to the adapter to power the phone when HDMI connected).

Tried it out there, works fine. TV sees it as a 1080i input, all HD videos I played on my phone seem to show on the TV fine (it's not upscaled from the phones 480x800 resolution, it's proper HD). When I wasn't on a video, everything that's on my phone's screen is shown on the TV. When the phone is in portrait mode, it takes up a narrow part of the middle of the screen, in landscape it takes up the full screen (upscaled from 800x480 -> 1080i so graphics, etc aren't as sharp as the HD videos).

I should have checked photos to see if they're output as 8Mpxel->1080i or if they go through 8Mpxel -> 800x480 -> upscale to 1080i.

Anyone know if it's possible to use both the USB OTG functionality and the MHL HDMI output at the same time somehow? Would be very handy to use a mouse to control things when using HDMI out.

    Hi all!

Just got my S2 today and i'm delighted with it!

Just a quick question as to what cover/screen protection people are using?

I had the HTC Hero for 2 years and never bothered with anything for it but the S2 feels so delicate and i fear my butter fingers could do it some damage!

I don't want to put a thick case on it as I love its slimness, so I just wanted to see what other boardsies were doing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,060 ✭✭✭Kenny Logins

Case mate 'barely there', just enough protection IMHO, without bulking the phone up, nice matt back finish too. About £16 on ebay.

I still need to get a case and root and rom it

I'm trying to backup my rom using rom manager. I've rooted, and I think I've flashed the clockworkmod recovery (It says Current Recovery: ClockWorkMod 4.0.0.2). When I click Backup Mod I get an error saying E: failed to verify whole-file signature, E: signature verification failed. Installation aborted.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Like yourself, had Hero for 2 years, and no scratches over that time on the screen.
Thought that with Gorilla Glass on the SGS2, that I would have little to fear. Scratched the screen day 1 :eek:
Not very impressed given that I am fairly careful (well I was out til 4.30 that night ;))

Didn't really want to get a screen protector, as I was concerned it would disimprove the feel/responsiveness of the screen, so I got a slim leather flip case that protects the screen when it's in my pocket. Got a Zenus Case.

    I got the black one.

There is a thorough review over at XDA

Not cheap though :o, was in kind of celebratory mood after I discovered that my upgrade was free :D

Just got one of these and its charging away here beside me but I havent had to buy a phone in 6 years so my knowledge of androids is pretty much non existent. Anyone know of any good guides/tutorials that I should give a read.

I see people talking about different ROMs/setups, I would like to get an understanding of that but there is alot of misinformation and conflicting opinions when I google stuff so I'm thinking that the guys here could give me some solid pointers.

    Thanks in Advance.

Also looking for the stock Meteor kernel & firmware. Has anyone copied it before they went rooting etc?

Would be handy if anyone needs to return/exchange their phone to return it to stock Meteor unrooted condition first.

There's not a lot to it. You'll need a google account, and then you're best bet is to import your contacts and calendar into google, and then they will always automatically sync (over the air).

Then add widgets (long press on the home screen) and icons to your homescreens to your taste. There are plenty more available on the market.

A good idea is to look at some threads where people post screenshots of their homescreens to get some ideas.
There is one specifically for SGS2 here at XDA
And another one here on boards for android in general.

If it's your first smartphone, the first thing you'll notice is that you have to charge it pretty much every day. The screen usually uses most of the battery and turning down the screen brightness, and shortening the screen timeout can help. Also switch off GPS (pull down the bar at the top of the screen and a toggle switch will be there) when you don't need it.

If you don't like the user interface, you don't have to root or change the ROM (firmware), you can just use a different free launcher available on the android market (such LauncherPro, ADW Launcher, of GO Launcher) these are more customisable and have different themes available to complement them.

Rooting your phone allows you to
    1. remove/block system apps which may be running in the background (using battery) despite maybe you having no want or need for them
    2. Use apps that require root access (caution here with how much access you give 3rd party apps)
Custom firmwares generally run a slimmed down version of Samsung's firmware so should be lighter on battery.

SGS2 has Swype keyboard installed, but it is not the default keyboard. It is a matter of taste but can speed up your typing significantly. To enable it long press in any text box and a menu will pop up, select input method, and then Swype -give it a whirl, it's as easy to switch back.

Here's a list of apps I actually use:

Doubletwist - Syncs with your itunes (or Doubletwist for you PC)
Beautiful Widgets* - Pretty clocks and weather widgets
    ADWLauncher
    Bloat Freezer -requires root
Simi clock - Another clock widget
Bubble - use your phone as a level
Dropbox - Synchronise files/photos over the air
Pulse News - for reading blogs/news posts
SMS Backup and Restore - Allows you to back up texts on a schedule
    Textdroid - send your webtexts
    Tweetdeck - Twitter client
Official XBMC Remote - Wifi Remote Control for XBMC
Data Counter Widget - keep track of your data usage
    TripIt - Mange your itinerary
Dublin Bus - Real time bus information
Sayso - Reviews of local resataurants and such
    WhatsApp - Instant Messenger
Viber - VOIP client, not on the market you need to sign up for beta via website
    Formula1.com 2011 - What can I say I'm a bit of a nerd!
Handcentsms - an alternative sms app

Anyway there's my waffly 2 cents

Guys does anyone who has the Galaxy S2 interested to try the HTC Sensation? I have the Sensation and really like it, great phone, but having had a Desire before that I kinda fancy a change. If anyone is on for a swap please let me know.

I'm getting one later today when I port from meteor Zascar, originally wanted the HTC but can't pass up the free SGII on Three now that they've released the price of the Sensation. If I don't fall in love with the SGII I'll let you know!:)

Why are you porting from Meteor to Three?

I'm considering porting to Meteor as I can get the SGII on a 12 month contract for €30 per month. The phone costs money with Meteor but the contract is €10 per month less and you're contract free after a year.

That is the best deal/contract out there IMHO.

I spoke to Meteor Sales last week, they said they'd let me upgrade to the SGII & buy it for €89, but I'd have to go with a €65 per month contract (currently on bill pay connect 50, 500 minutes/texts).
As it is I never use anywhere near my minutes etc, so the same handset free, on 40 per month with all you can eat Data & 350 minutes with Three seemed okay (albeit for 24 months). But my head is fried these days with small children, so I'm probably missing something!
