All he'd have to do is read his semi-fiction book.

Latest estimates have exceeded 1 trillion Indian Rupees which is about 20 billion USD approximately. There's also rumors that they have stopped publishing the figures due to security concerns.

State Government has said it again that this is the temple's property and will belong to the temple. And the Government will put security structures in place to assist the temple to protect it.

$20 billion is a vastly huge figure! But then it dawns on we owe many multiples of that to ECB, bond holders and what not. :(

Yea, it would have disappeared in to the vaults of the British queen along with the rest of her gold, diamonds and masterpieces.
Most likely the majority of them, never to be seen again.

British Queen / some secret department must have a huge stash of these sort of stuff.

I can think of Nizam and other few really rich kingdoms that was destroyed by Brits in India, but they also had similar things going on in Africa, China, Far East etc too. May be some day the British secret stash of many hundreds of trillions will come to light too..! Serious challenge to DeBeers!

Sorry to go on about the Nizam of Hydrabad, but if the current find that makes news across the world is worth $20 billion, Nizam's wealth was esimated to be around $210 billion - almost all of it - went to the British as 'security money' and various other frauds.

my guess is a bit of it will go to a museum for an exhibition and the rest will be stored away in the archives...

hopfully they don't just melt the stuff down... its gold a diamonds, its a luxury and has no great benifits aprt from dsplays of wealth, it should stay in the form it was made by the goldsmiths 300 years ago.

I was in the Nizam's palace, now a museum, in Hyderabad last year. He certainly was loaded. Most of the wealth came from the Golconda diamond mines near the city. And I suppose most of it ended up, one way or another, in British pockets.

At least the wealth in Thiruvananthapuram (or Trivandrum, as the British called it) will be safe, as this article tells::)

very interesting story! although 150 years doesn't sound too long ago to me for stashing that much gold and jewels.

lets hope they do put it to good use and only keep the very interesting pieces for use as national treasures. will be interesting to see what happens next!

    Hmmm, interesting!

    From Wikipedia

"On 4 July 2011 the seven-member expert team tasked with taking stock of the temple assets decided to postpone opening of the chamber marked 'B'. This chamber is sealed with an iron door with the image of a cobra on it and it has not been opened, due to the belief opening it would result in much misfortune.[31] The royal family said that many legends were attached to the temple and that chamber B has a model of a snake on the main door and opening it could be a bad omen.[32] Seven-member team will consult with some more experts on 8 July 2011 and then they may take the final decision on opening of chamber ‘B’.[33] An Ashtamangala Devaprasnam conducted in the Temple to discern the will of the Lord revealed that any attempts to open the Chamber B would cause Divine displeasure and that the holy articles in the other chambers were defiled in the inventorying process."
