Pure-FTPd with Nas box

I bought D-Link DNS 320 Nas box a few weeks back. A fairly cool product for the price (£60). There's a script you can get that runs on start up and gives you ssh access, basically turning it into a mini linux server. I have that up and running and have installed transmission as well as twonky mediaserver, no problems there.

My problem is with the FTP server that comes preinstalled. I get time outs logging in, even from within my own network using the internal IP address of the box. Trying to login using FTP with WinSCP gives the following message:
    --------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [privsep] [TLS] ----------
You are user number 1 of 2 allowed.
Local time is now 17:52. Server port: 1025.
You will be disconnected after 10 minutes of inactivity.

It appears to make the connection ok but then timeout, I'm really not sure what's going on. Maybe this isn't even a linux issue, but does anyone have any suggestions?

not clue as to the pure-ftp timeout, but if you have ssh working why not just use scp instead of ftp?

I want to be able to access it through a browser or an app on my phone so would like an FTP server up and running. If it's not working on my internal network can I rule out a Firewall issue?

Could just be shítty software, might try installing a different FTP server.

Try configuring the FTP to use active mode not passive, that seemed to work for some people online.

Thread here about a similar sort of problem.

Have tried using active only, doesn't make a difference. Thanks for the help but the problems people are having in that thread are mostly about not being able to gain access from outside their network. I can't even FTP into this thing internally.

I'm just gonna try installing a new FTP Server, maybe the pre-installed one got screwed up when I updated the firmware or ran that script to gain SSH access.

Actually just found some people moaning about how the firmware update broke the FTP functionality, so there's the problem then.

I use filezilla & fireftp FTP client software myself but for the protocol I choose ssh... so if you can ssh, then you should be able to scp and if you can scp you should be able to access it using an ftp client (from your phone etc) but using the ssh protocol. It would be more secure too if you hoped to access it from outside of your home network eventually.

I can get into it with SFTP using WinSCP. The app on my phone is just a file manager that can view local, LAN and FTP files. It's not really an FTP client so it doesn't give you the option of changing the protocol.

SCP also works but it complains about any of the files I've downloaded directly onto the box using transmission. Something to do with the user permissions.

Aha, I see. I don't have a smart phone either so I'm not sure what kind of browsers are available but that's why I mentioned fireftp. I neglected to say it's a firefox addon that provides an ftp client in a browser... but that's why I mentioned it.

It might be the firewall - one way to be sure is just to disable it temporarily.... if it turns out to be the problem then you could look into rules needed to use it while remaining secure. I would switch off all firewalls to test.

You say this is basically a linux system... is there anything in the /var/logs that might help you?

Try downloading and using AndFTP from the market(assuming you are on droid), it supports SFTP and SCP. It is free. There might be something similar on Apple if you have an iPhone.

Yeah I got AndFTP yesterday, it's ok. I can connect to the box and download files (speeds are very slow compared to what my network upload speed should be capable of, but that's a separate issue), but that's all you can do. You can't do any maintenance like move/delete/rename files etc.

SCP and SFTP are slower protocol than FTP, this could well be your problem. What sort of speeds are we talking about?

Downloading at about 65k/s, home network should be able to upload at 200-250 k/s.
