Spraying ferns with asulox... Can anyone recommend a good dye that works to indicate

I been spraying ferns last 2 evenings, have quad ticking over with 95ltr tank with 40 metre hose/handlance and giving them a good soaking.

Just wondered can anyone recommend a good colour dye that they've used on ferns?

have never used it though. the local coop dont stock it either.
not sure how many liters of spray it would treat either.

i've tried red food colouring with no visable affect and washing powder tablet with no effect either.

worth a punt for 20 quid.

No advice on dyes I'm afraid....only thing that we've used at home that has been effective (while painstaking) was using flour to mark out boundaries of what was done and not done.

The best I've used is a product called Blazon. You add a little to the tank and start spraying. The dye is blue but will fade after a few days. Available from N.A.D and other agrochemical outlets. Hope this helps!

Here's a directions leaflet. Looks like a 500 Ml bottle. Mix rate is 100mls per 100 litres of the diluted spray mix.From;

Did a couple of more tanks fri and got some specialist blue spraying dye from work must check the name again ... But it wasn't great to be honest ... Blue dye on dark green plant isn't a great combination !!

Might try double the dose this evening to see If it improves things!!

Giving them all a good soaking anyway but no doubt I'm using more chemical as some getting it on the double !! I hate these ferns and it rained all last July so I've been waiting a long time to hit them!

Asulox does a very good job on them, sprayed the majority of mine off, nearly all gone now - save for some spots I haven't got to doing yet - with very little regrowth in previous problem areas

It'd be mighty to see the back of them john!

I'm sure I'll miss the odd immature frond at some stage but hope to get a good coverage/kill!

It's tough going though to handlance 100 litres at a time but I'm not using the boom as they all in awkward spots in winterage and I'd definitely roll the quad if I started trying to use the boom!

I'm still at them... Damn things... It's time consuming and expensive stuff but hopefully will be worth it!!!

Them quads with 100ltrs on the back are a death trap slightest incline and she'll rear up.. Have started throwing a bag of feed on the front if going up hilly bit:)

Not a single fern in sight this spring in fields that i sprayed... the stuff is good!!

Will hopefully do remaining few acres this July! Added inspiration that it does a great job!:D

Good to hear that.I have about 6 acres of them to get this year.What is the best time of year to spray them?any tips?What ratio did you dilute it at?Who did you buy it from?

I put 1 litre into each 95ltr tank and gave them a good soaking all with handlance as steep area and I'd surely roll her if using the boom.

I got 3 fine evenings end of June - July 1st/2nd and I got blue dye from work to indicate ones I'd sprayed... 100% kill as they up in strong in neighbours field and I scoured the place looking for one on our side.

They say July as any earlier and smaller lads won't be out... Also need plenty of plant to be above ground to translocate the chemical to massive root system ... Don't cut after either.

Good luck with it and they are a scourge, a horrible and dangerous plant young calves are devils for eating tops of them... e95 for 5 litre I think was what I was paying for Asulox but worth every penny

It would depend on how thick the crop are but my 5 litres did no more than 2 acres!

I mentioned earlier that I got no chance the previous year to get at them, and I had problems with calves eating the young ferns so I lashed it onto them when I got the chance and they were a massive crop like 3 ft some even more and shaded out everything else !

I've woodland to do next and I may reduce the wetting I give them with the lance and see will it save me on chemical ! Will know again spring 2013 ! Wasn't taking any chances with the fields I had to do last year
