Is it possible to do this? I'm fairly handy when it comes to tech and messing with them, I'd like to give it a go.

Is it possible to replace the memory with a 16gb version and if so, where could I get it?

There's no need for that, glad to see you've deleted it.

I've been searching google for ages and have found nothing.

Other than buying a new phone, no.

lol, So you are handy technically are you, how good are you at de-soldering chips of a circuit board and re-soldering each leg in the correct spot with little to no room for errors.

This question is almost as stupid as asking if you can replace the graphics card in a laptop.

Actually I have replaced a graphics "card" in a laptop. Ever heard of the problem with the HP DV6000 gpu's overheating? ;)

I don't want to solder, but I wanted to know if it was possible to change a part within the iPhone, with one from a 16gb, even if it involved replacing more than I needed to.

Could a mod delete or close this thread as I don't think I'm going to get any help. :(

Listen mate, I have the DV6000 and know the motherboard very well. If you really changed the graphics card on your own then I tip my hat to you. I have been soldering for about 12 years now and I would never attempt that.

I think the comedic element for me came from the fact that it would probably cost you more to replace the memory then to just buy a new phone on contract.

This is kinda arrogant is it not? Come off your high horse he was asking a question!!

Id say a new phone would be cheaper,, youd prob manage a 16g 3Gs and could just re-syn everything from your lap top

He was speaking the truth. Yes, it would be possible to upgrade the memory but you'd need the soldering skills of the god almighty and you'd run a major risk of damaging the phone.

Best bet OP is to get a new board and swap it out, but like the others said, you'd be better off getting a new one.
