That depends on what you mean by failed?

People are aware of stds, the same way they are aware of cigarettes causing cancer, but, getting drunk or simply having brovado (hence the high incidence of STDs in young males (thinking themselves unlikely to get infected)), is the main cluprit.

    Again, Jesus saves.

    Hi Everyone,

Trying to read through all the info but there's so many pages!! just wondering, does anyone have any personal experience in the clinics in limerick?? As far as i can see there are 3 of them, but have no idea what they're like and all ready nervous enough about going in that im hoping someone can put me at ease here!! also im assuming that there are no free clinics in limerick??

Thanks in advance, any info is really appreciated!! :-)

    Hey there!

    Firstly, don't be worried!

The STI/GUM in the Limerick Regional Hospital is FREE. Even if you have any STI, the medication is also free.
The whole procedure out there is completely anonymous, you get assigned a letter and number combination code. And when you are called to go to see the nurse/doctor they use this number/letter combination e.g. 35B.

The nurse will ask you questions about your sexual history, then you go for the actual test. This will involve providing a urine sample, usally you have to have to hold your urine for 12/24 hours before the test. Then you will receive a swab in your penis/mouth/anus depending on the answers you gave to the nurse i.e. if you are gay and have had anal sex then you will receive a swab in the anus.

The whole experience can be nerve wracking but relax, it's nothing to worry about. Everybody in the clinic is there for the same reson, just relax and remember it's better to get tested!!!

hi guys, i am planning on making a visit to the guide clinic in james' as i think i might have chlamydia, a girl i slept with approx 5 weeks ago contacted me to say she had it.if i inform the nurse that a previous partner has been diagnosed with chlamydia, will she prescribe antibiotics there and then? as well as giving me a screening anyway

You will get a full screening. The screening should show there and then if you have an infection [chlamydia]. If you have one, you will be treated with anti-biotics.
You will be tested for HIV, HEPB etc... as well

just to give some info on my experience, i attended the guide clinic in james' today and it really wasn't as bad as i expected. i got there around 10 am and was in the first half of the tickets allocated at half 11, after filling out some forms i was told to come back at 2 o clock. i was seen at about quarter to 3 and was out of the building by ten past 3. the waiting around is the worst part, the actual examination is nothing to worry about. the nurse's are very helpful and great to deal wit :)

    quick question guys:

Is it possible to get your full (guide clinic in St James) results in writing?

I only ask because in the past they staff in the guide clinic just said to me "we will contact you in there is anything wrong" and I never heard anything from them.

I am with a new girlfriend and would like to prove to her that I am clean so it would be ideal if i could get a hard copy of my results

    Anybody know ?

    Cheers

Can some of the guys tell me is the cotton bud (swab) up the middle/inside of penis still part of all standard STI testing ?I would have no issues whatsever with urine test and could even live with blood(although hate needles) but cotton bud up urethra ?Euuugh! If so is it as bad as youd expect!?Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,006 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Male here considering going for STI check .Terrified at prospect of 'cotton bud ' up penis! Is this a feature of all standard checks?Any 'feedback'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,058 ✭✭✭Uriel.

Yes the swab is pretty standard and it is no big deal. a slight discomfort for the 1.5 seconds the swab is used and that's it.

slight irritation has been known to occur for 24 to 48 hours afterwards while peeing. That is it. It is not a reason to not get checked. Best of luck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,006 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Just back from full STI check up in Charter Medical Center in Smithfield . 120 euro walk in service , minimal waiting .One jab for blood and one small urine sample after not passing water for at least 2 hours .Most importantly NO 'swab' which was an almighty relief .Seems ya have to be practically oozin crap outta yer penis to necesitate that nowadays .VERY sensitive ,professional service by all staff.Just see receptionist at counter and called into consultation room by nurse who was a gem!Was really frettin' over this .No biggie !Results in a fortnight by text ,fingers crossed !

    Hey,

Posted previous for advice myself so thanks to everyone!

Ive used both the Family Planning Clinic and the Regional in Limerick for the STD Check and must say found both the exact same, with the major difference that the Regional was free where as Planning Clinic could have been around €150 (although dont quote me on that, cant remember exactly!)

I was in the regional a mth ago and found them to be very nice in there. The clinic is near the main gate, just beside the A&E entrance on the 2nd floor... Made my appt, was in there early like i was told and was in and out in about an hr! I was only the 4th in the que so it didnt take long...

If i was to choose which place to go back to in the morning, would choose the regional mainly cos of the money factor in fairness but they were lovely in there!

And best of all is to get the all clear, which i was mostly expecting but still you never know! Was putting it off for ages and ages but im actually so happy i have it done and dont have the niggling voice at the back of my head!! :-)

Anyway i was running late that morning, so i didnt get there til 8.15/8.20 and as i said at that time i was 4th in que... dunno was it a quiet morning or maybe if you there before 8.30 your ok... basically theres a line of chairs in the corridor.... keep walking up to the top of them and take a seat... one of the woman will come out from the office and call you in to register... they will take all your info and assign you a number... this is what you will be known as in there, they dont call your name at all!!

the whole thing doesnt take long, basically call you in, take your history, then go out and wait again, called again and for me(obv different cos im a girl) they take the smear and send you out again and then get called in a final time and thats for the blood!!

and then your on your merry way again! results take approx 10 working days... they'll contact you if you have something and if you have nothing then you wont hear a peep!!

    Good Luck!! :-)

Whats the story with your man in Ranelagh? Would I get an appointment in the next week/month? How much does it cost? Will they keep a record of me? Will my GP find out? Will I get my results there and then? If I am clear will I ever hear from him again? Do I have to give my address? Will he post things to this address?

Dr. Freedman. He is one of Ireland's top STI specialists. He practices out of his private clinic in Ranelagh and also as a consultant out of St James'
Would I get an appointment in the next week/month?
That depends on how busy he is, if he has holiday plans etc... But mostly likely you will get an appointment in a matter of days.
    How much does it cost?
    circa €200
Will they keep a record of me?
Yes. But you will be referenced by a unique reference number
    Will my GP find out?
    No
Will I get my results there and then?
No. You will be given a card with just your unique reference number on it and usually your D.O.B. You will be told to ring the Dr in two weeks to get your results. However, you will be told on the day if you have Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, etc.. but you will need to await the blood test results for HIV, Hepatitis and Syphilis
If I am clear will I ever hear from him again?
See above. It is your responsibility to phone for your results.
Do I have to give my address? Will he post things to this address?
    No and No.

A few weeks ago I noticed what could be best described as a Zit on my penis, I was pretty concerned for it as I was afraid it might be Herpes or Warts, alot of googling led to me believe it was a Sebaceous Cyst as did watching the Embarrassing Illnesses on Channel 4, a super tv show for educating yourself on these things.

I made an appointment for a full sti screen at Kerry General in Tralee. To do this you must ring the Victoria Hospital in Cork for an appointment as listed on www.guide2guide.ie as the when you ring the number listed for Tralee they will tell you ring Cork as the clinic is like an outreach from their Cork operation. I had to wait 4 weeks for the appointment.

So anyway I attended at 1.45pm for my 2pm appointment in Tralee and there was already about 10 people before me and I was called at 2.45pm whereupon I was taken into a private room with the doctor and his nurse, I was asked questions about my sexuality and frequency of sex etc. It was my 2nd time there as I was in before when I was in my teens after getting a text from an ex advising I get a screen as she had caught "something", I did that and luckily had nothing.

There was a throat swab and swab of the japs eye taken, along with a blood sample taken in another room by a different nurse. The Doctor allayed my fears as I had indeed only a sebaceous cyst and some fordyce spots so nothing to worry about there.

I was then told go away for an hour before they'd have some initial results and after returning an hour later I had to wait another 50mins before being called which in total was three hours and 15 mins from start to finish. However much to my surprise I had suspected Chlamydia despite having absolutely none of the symptoms of it and the doctor gave me a Zithromax pack in which one treatment of 4 tablets taken together clears it out. Still in a way I was relieved as I was afraid I might have had warts so as weird as it sounds I'd take Chlamydia anyday over those.

I was really shocked to have had it as I am normally so careful using condoms always, I can only pinpoint it to one source which was a year and a half ago when a few of the lads and myself were on a stag and we took prozzies (who were supposed to be tested) and I must have contracted it from oral as I used protection..... Lesson learnt and now for a few awkward calls and texts like I myself received a few years ago; however telling my GF will be the hardest and it could end our relationship but I have to tell her because it effects women alot worse than men I think.

I rang one of the lads who went with us on that trip and he himself had caught it too (but the git told no-one) as wasn't sure where he got it and worse still he spread it to his GF, however she was also unfaithful and thought she gave it to him, however they since broke up and were both cured! Nightmare scenario

I go back in two weeks time for the rest of my results so hopefully no other nasties will emerge and I just wrote this to give boardies an insight to how the system works in Tralee and as a warning to get regularly screened especially if you mess about with prostitutes occasionally. I wasn't tested for years as I thought there was nothing wrong with me and felt safe as I always wore condoms but this shows even a blowjob can infect you.

How could they not know for sure??

I did not receive back my full results yet and this was only a preliminary result there and then, they found cellular activity down in the penis when they took the Japs eye swab, from my sexual history either chlamydia or gonorrhea are the most likely culprits and the medication zithromax works against both of them.

When I get my blood results I presume they will also get back the bacterial cultures from the lab which would specify exactly what if anything I have. The doc told me it was very slight and they weren't sure just yet, I will know more later on. Perhaps they don't have full lab facilities to check in Tralee on the day as the sti-clinic is an outreach operation from the clinic based at the Victoria Hospital in Cork as far as I know; however it appears you have to wait two weeks in Cork also as other posters here have said.

I'm thinking of going to Smithfield slightly cheaper but still convenient. Wondering could you request just to be tested for curable ones as I wish to do that first to get used to procedure etc. I will get tested for other ones at a later date just dont feel ready yet.

Without getting into the price end of things which i know nothing of, the treatable ones have the embarrassing tests and the untreatable ones are blood tests.

Do the lot at one time and get it over with. Do it tomorrow. Thinking/worrying about it won't do your health any favours.

    Just do it.

Yes I would echo the above poster's sentiments, just so the whole works together and be done with it. There's no value in waiting (providing you are outside ofthe window period). You'll be in and out in approx 30mins - visual, bloods, urine and swab. There is no major "procedure"

What time would I have to be there at if they are handing out tickets at 8am for a 9am clinic?

Does anyone know / been before?

    Hi There,

I was wondering if anyone has ever used lemon oil to treat GW. I saw this suggestion on another threat posted here.

Basically I am female was diagnosed with GW in March. I had 3 rounds of Cyro then and they cleared up. 2 months later, they were back, more aggressive than ever. Had another round of Cyro and was prescribed warticon. they cleared for a month and now they are back again.

So 6 months later, and €320 down the drain, I am as worse off as I was initially. So I was wondering if anyone has used this natural remedy that is lemon oil. I know its meant to burn the hell out of the skin. Without sounding too graphic, I have 3 clusters of 3-4 warts at the mo, and they are not located in the more sensitive area. I really want to try and find what works, as I will be travelling in the new year and it would be handy to have something with me if they flare up once more, which is looking likely at this point given the history of the last few months :(

    Any advice appreciated!

go to a GP not a consultant, they are cheaper and ironically know more about what they are doing - you really don't want to mess around with that sort of thing down there, scaring etc..
