Well since 'official' release is today and couldn't find a thread about it...

Anyway a few listens in and I think it's a fantastic, beautiful album. I'm late to the Bon Iver party - have only got around to For Emma... within the last month or so - but this is definitely one of the better albums I've heard in recent times. The first four songs are probably my favourite - a stunning quadrilogy.

Only issue I have is the cheesy sax in the background in some songs and to the forefront in Beth / Rest. As for that polarising song I must say I do admire the intentions, and for the most part I think it's a great piece of music. But when the dodgy sax comes in, I do cringe a bit.

Just giving it a listen here....

Edit: Its a fantastic album, have a feeling I'll be returning to it again and again. True enough, the last track is wall to wall 80s cheesy ballad territory, it shouldnt work but it does...I love it!

It's an amazing album but Beth / Rest is at odds with everything else, sounds like something off the Top Gun soundtrack.

The opening guitar plucking from 'Perth' has been stuck in my head for weeks now.

Towers is a great song too it has to be said.

In recent times probably the most consistent band I've come across - there's no song I dislike!

What was his aim with this album, to make grown men curl up into a ball and cry like little girls?
If so, he's coming damn close, especially with Holocene. Just wow.

    naked curl music :D

just streaming it now. the voice is still hypnotising.

Beautiful, beautiful record. 'Perth', 'Holocene' and 'Calgary' are immense and I'm definitely on the love side when it comes to 'Beth/Rest' - it's completely at odds with the rest of the album but it just seems right, although it does sound like he's going to break out into the chorus of 'Against All Odds' at any stage!

Holocene reminds me a lot of the song Hazelton, which was off an EP Justin Vernon did before Bon Iver. Find it on Youtube and you'll see what I mean.

Loving the record overall, possibly even more than For Emma... the final track in particular's a ballsy move that reminds me of Bruce Hornsby and is still somehow amazing. :p

Perth is one of the best opening songs to an album ever.

I like that hes willing to experiment with his sound. I'd say there is a lot of good work yet to be produced by Bon Iver.

Just picked up the album up in town there. Only given it one spin so far, such a beautiful album. The drums and bass on 'Holocene' are spectacular. 'Michicant' is an early favourite.

Beautiful album. Calgary, Holecene and Beth/Rest are masterpieces. The latter is especially impressive. You need nerve to try, let alone pull off something like that.

Just listening to it on Spin now. Fairly impressed with it but will need a few more listens before I will decide to buy or not.
Didn't really get into For Emma but this sounds a bit more interesting to me.

I really kind of hate Beth/Rest, but everything else, I love.

    Anyhoo. Colbert the other night:

I think this album is great, more of a band sound as opposed to a guy in a cabin sound! I thought people would be lining up to slate this album but the reaction seems really positive probably because it's too good to slag off!

Anyone going to see them in Dublin in October? raging that tickets sold out straight away.

will see if any pop up for sale closer to the time and if not I will see how finances are and may have to buy from a ticket tout website which I really would rather not do, for obvious reasons

Picked up the album yesterday and I've had it on pretty much constantly since. Up there for album of the year so far in my opinion.

Got it yesterday and it sounds really good. Hopefully not too immediate: it's the growers that (usually) stay with me.

there's never a reason to use these sites, more tickets will be on sale nearer the time and it's not like it's the last time he'll play Dublin (barring some odd twist

I've just finished listening to the album, on first listen it's pretty good. I love Beth/Rest, but the sax solos definitely are a bit cringeworthy. I think Holocene is a song that I'll have on repeat.

Yeah Perth is a real gem! Cant get that rift out of my head! Some of his vocal range reminds me of Peter Gabriel. But hey that last track is borderline Toto but if you listen to the single drum beat it's off beat and actually out of sync its technically an excellent track!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,863 ✭✭✭seachto7

beat ain't out of sync at all. Do you mean it's out of time? Sounds fine to me...

I was going to go off on a rant and write about how great this album is but (IMO) I think "immense" sums it up.
