1.7 diesal astra van, sounds like dooms day is upon us all.

Why not look at a focus van instead? I hear from friends they are a great van. Has to be a nicer drive aswell.

we used to have them as company cars. the job bought them cause they were too cheap to get something decent like a focus van.

And they do feel very cheap, plastics especially. Load space was very good, bit of poke out of the 1.7 lump.

If it was my money, i'd go for the focus van.

The 1.7 is a izuzu lump and its trouble free for the most part.

Is it an isuzu engine though? I thought there were two different ones available. The isuzu and opel's own 1.7 "low-boost" engine.

Yea the old astras had the izzuzu engine, newer ones had a general motors one, which wasnt as good, though someone round here will know the difference

I had a 99 for 12 months, never gave an ounce of bother, very easy to work on and quite comfortable to drive, good on fuel and loads of space in the back.
As long as the 01 your after has a decent service history your on the ball.
When I sold mine the guy who both it rang me a day later saying it was broken down and his mechanic said the fuel pump was gone and the cost of repair was down to me etc, so I went and checked it out and only took me a minute to realise he had put petrol not diesel into it:D

correct this is commonly mistaken, the isuzu lump was finished in the ashtray in 98 i think, the other engine is a GM low blow diesel which was no were near as good as the isuzu lump.but its hit and miss some were just as reliable some werent just depends weather you get a dog or not

Have an (08) Astra 1.7 van, have had a Focus 1.6 van; prefer the Astra. The spec level of the Focus might have changed my mind - the Astra has AC, a grid bulkhead and alloys where the Focus didn't.

Its reliable but I have an inverse reliablity relationship with vehicles - a brand new Toyota Auris I had briefly has electrical gremlins and has blown its turbo despite Toyota's reputation; my Citroen C4 never missed a beat in 250,000km...

I worked for a company that used nothing but ashtrays for the engineers and most gave no trouble, down to the driver really......

The only fault I would have is a lack of side doors, bit of a struggle to get something out of the very front when your standing at the rear, other than that They're an OK van. And to be fair '01 van if it's the right money with a DOE and it's tidy it should be OK........

If you want perfection and warranty....... buy new..... and at that you may not get pefection with a new one.

    Best of luck......
