PAYE employee, nixers & VAT

    Hi, I'm working full time since Jan and on a salary of < €30k but am looking into doing some additional work on the side (evenings/ weekends, etc)

    The additional work would be considered professional services and would be mainly done for ordinary people (i.e. not a company)

    I wouldn't be taking on much work and would expect to charge less than €7k in total for the rest of the year. Therefore meaning I would be under the VAT threshold.

    I have been asked to quote for a job and am wondering should I put on the quote that I will be VAT exempt or just say 'price includes 0% VAT' or simply say 'price includes VAT'?

    If I get the job, when I submit my invoice, will not having a VAT number on it be an issue?

    Is it ok to not say anything to revenue until October and then let them know about the additional income I've been receiving?

    Your PAYE income isn't included when considering if your self employed income exceeds the circa 37K VAT threshold.

    If you're not registered for VAT, you don't mention VAT at all on your invoice.

    If your customer is audited, the Revenue will certainly look at your invoice more closely if no number on it. Unlikely to happen though as they are non businesses.

    You should register now as far as I know but it shouldn't create a huge fuss if you leave it until you are filing your return if your income is just a few thousand. There's no advantage to leaving it until later though so why not just do it now.
