considering they get paid compensation when on holidays because they are missing overtime as a result of being on holidays, i think they should be in the fucking gym 4 days a week

They should (all) be physically able to handle whatever their current duties are likely to demand of them. Fit for purpose, in other words. And yes, that should also exempt 4' 10" featherweights from patrolling city centres at night.

That's entirely up to the individual Sean. Something quick and easy that does not require a great deal of time. Baked potato with tuna/beans etc for lunch. Also a nice salad could be done. Plenty of meat/veg dinners can be put together in no time at all. Lasagne, chicken/fish can be cooked quickly and used again during the week. Leftover fish could be put in a fish pie for later. a Caesar salad with some spices could be added with leftover chicken. Leftover bolognese sauce and some meat and veg could be added to a home-made pizza and baked in the oven. Being honest there is a lot of meals that could be whipped up in a short space of time.

I should also add that breaks are usually a luxury and not a certainty by any means.

Male guards should stand no smaller than 5ft 10" and weight no less then 180lbs.
Women can do all the office stuff.

In an ideal world of course it would be great if all gardai were thin and could do the 100m in 11 seconds, i know many overweight people in many professions who are invaluable in their jobs, I'd much prefer work with an overweight Garda with great communication skills than a fit Garda who head is up his arse and is ignorant, thin people don't always = perfect!

That is true about their shifts. I have a mate who is a garda and I do be stunned at his shifts. He had just done 7 nights (10PM-6AM) on the trot when the Queen and Barrack came over and was told no days off and that he had to do another 14 days of 12 hour shifts. Wouldn't be into that at all.

And I have mates doing 24 hour shifts during the visits. I know of other people who spent a few days bivvi'd up during the vists. Everyone knows someone who gets a raw deal at some stage.

The first thing I do when I come off a 24 hour duty is go training. It doesn't take that long to go for a run or do a quick conditioning session or something.

Nothing to do with living in a ideal world. If you are a Garda on patrol then you should be fit and have to prove it on a regular basis. Also you mention other professions, what other profession has a job to protect and serve the public? An overweight Garda on the streets is not on, no matter how you try to dress it up.

    How regular?.

    Even once?

If you had been attacked, and the chasing cop was overweight, would you not be arguing that, the officer should be fit and able?

Fat cop wheezing in a chase when the perpetrator gets away is not acceptable.

you could also bring age into it, you suggesting all older gardai get desk jobs?

I never once said they (AGS) shouldn't be fit, I said in reply to one poster why its unfair to compare members of AGS to members of the Defence Forces, who are by and large very fit.

It would be fair to say the Defence Forces have plenty of time to keep fit, it is part of there everyday routine.

I think expecting all members of AGS to be as fit ye guys would be impractical.

In fairness you're not comparing like with like as the age profile of the army is much younger as most retire long before gardai who have to serve 30 years. That takes a fair few fatties out of it.

Must be a Dublin problem as I don't see any fat Gardaí down here in Cork.

Was thinking this walking around Spain the other week...
All their police force are ripped! And every night you see them going for runs in their civvies down the beach. Means you wouldnt feck with them thats for sure-theyre beasts!! Whereas here the guardai command very little respect and a lot of that is down to their percieved fitness levels.

Is this opinion based on anything? Have you ever actually seen a Garda in a violent situation? I think your perceptions are off on that one. In my experience, there's very few non-drunk people who'll mess with Gardaí.

That post doesn't seem to mention getting paid for oertime when on holiday. There's a lot of incorrect info on it too. But you go ahead and keep believing everything you read on the internet.

I think the garda are too small, half of them look like kids dressed as garda going to a fancy dress party, they need to be taller and fitter to have presense when they are on the streets to intimidate the scumbags

Looking at that thread on the female police officer who sued the GMP over failing her fitness test reminded me of a thread I wanted to make before...

Even today I saw two police patrolling around Camden street.. One of them was so big, covered in sweat and red in the face from walking that I thought he was going to have a heart attack... I see big fat gardaí all the time.

I know the police are there for things other than theft, harassment etc, but these people are meant to keep the peace.. How could an obese man make chase should somebody cause distress nearby? He couldn't, so he doesn't deserve the job...

That guy would have struggled to get into his car never mind hastily catching and apprehending someone.

Should our police officers (all of them) not have to regularly pass fitness tests?! Yes/No?
Arent they called guards over here?

"+ while on holiday pay an allowance to cover the overtime/allowance you could have potentiallly got if you weren't on the beach basically unsocial hours work allowance even though your not in"

did you read the post? By the way, I only quoted this as a reference as I had heard it on the radio a few times a few months ago and didn't have the link. Never said I read it on the internet BTW.

There is a system for claiming missing allowances but not overtime. And the missing allowances are only claimed when the roster change is outside your control i.e. court appearances and injury on duty.
