2nd car, small engine petrol vs larger engine diesel?

    Hi,

    I got a new job which will involve about a 30-40min commute and so need to buy a car. We already have a family sized car, so this would be a second car and as such boot size etc doesn't really matter.. but want a car that has a bit of substance at the same time.

    I have a budget of about 5-9k, would i be better off getting an older larger engined diesel or a newer smaller engined petrol?

    for example, Ive been looking at VW polos, and came across a 2008, 1.2L petrol with 30k miles for 8500, and a 2006 VW polo, 1.4L diesel with 65k miles for 7500

    Any advice/opinions?

    You already have a family car, so don't have to worry about practicalities, you just need something nice to sit in for the commute:

    Audi TT
    Mini Cooper     (love the upholstery!)

    Audi A2 (really love the leather!)

    One thing to consider as you are becoming a 2 car household is this:

    if your family car is a 4 door saloon, then a hatchback (Polo / golf / focus) would be really handy for when you occasionally need to move stuff. We have two saloons, and recently moving a table and 4 chairs in a mazda6, was, ahem, interesting.

    apart from that, go for as new and low mileage as possible, small (see above is good as you now have 8 tyres to wear out , two insurance & tax bills and two services to deal with each year....

    Older, bigger, "classy" cars can mean big bills... which is often why they are temptingly "cheap". The tyre bills for big cars alone can make you cry...
