ubuntu 11.04

Hi guys ive just installed the latest ubuntu on my netbook its a hell of a lot better than windows 7 imo, I know people say you dont need an antivirus for linux but just to be safe could anyone recommend a decent free one for 11.04, thanks

apparently there is a huge difference from what ive read its been around 2 years since I last used ubuntu and I never really liked it but 11.04 is very similar to a mac os

ClamAV should be fine.

There's a version specifically for netbooks, netbuntu IIRC it's alot more snappier.

just checked and clam av comes pre installed on 11.04 so im ok lol, my netbook is quite powerful for a netbook. I did look at netbuntu first but I ran a trial of 11.04 from a flash drive and it was very fast so went ahead and installed

Another one joined to the party.

installed just over half hour and already i have the urge to go back to windows 7. mainly cause the screen is a beaut. But im on Ubuntu using Chromium lol. Thanks Superfish. I downloaded the mac theme just cant install it

plus my screen is over sized. Think i have this installed wrong ha ha. i downloaded the usb installer and set it up on my hd which then wen i clicked Wubi it asked me to install on C: done now. but still over sized

IMO ubuntu is good but drivers for laptops wifi cards is a pain in the arse to be honest even my Mobile brodband wont work with it complete FAIL!!

Until Linux can support more hardware windows will dominate the PC market because of this.. the wifi used to work in version 9.04 (i think) and my mobile broadband worked then but now its impossible to get anything to work with it i would have taught that the new version 11.04 that more support for hardware would have been introduced but it seems to be going backways to be honest.

Ubuntu is great for desktops tough just not so much for laptops!!!

I have had no problems with linux on my laptop(toshia A500-17x), wifi worked even when using livecd and so does meteor and vodaphones mobile broadband dongles

ya need to give it a week or so its highly customizable so you will have it looking like you want it in no time you just need to play round with the settings and try download some different apps here is a screen shot of how mine looks https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/417154/163310.png

its not great for older laptops I find but the newer ones its perfect on them

I tried Unity (the new desktop in 11.04) and didn't like it at all.

Tried Gnome 3 and it looks like they're going for a similar approach but better executed. It still didn't seem ready for prime-time though.

Went back to Gnome 2.

A bit disappointed tbh.

was just looking at gnome 3 there it looks really good might give it a go what was it you did not like was it just that it was drastically different from what you are used to ?

There's probably an element of me just being stuck in my ways but Gnome3 didn't feel quite finished yet. Like some bits were just there to see how people might react; first iterations of an idea that might not survive to Gnome3.2 or whatever. That's fine but I personally don't have the time to put up with it while I'm trying to get stuff done.

In particular, the new handling of virtual desktops I didn't like at all. And the lack (apparent at least) of configuration, theming and customization options wasn't good. I got the impression things might be better further down the line.

I spent less time with Unity. Just thought it was horrible. The buttons on the left, the menus, the panels... just awful.

yea a lot of people complained about the buttons to the left lol I personally liked them I have them set up so they pop out when I need them rather than as a permanant fixture the screenshot is unity all ive done is use the cairo docking bar, changed the theme to a mac and changed the wallpaper I was only messing round with it for a couple of hours im sure ive only touched the tip of the ice berg, I was reading that gnome 3 needs higher end graphics cards to excel surely that defeats the purpose of installing it on a netbook or an older machine ?

Not sure. I think both Gnome 3 and Unity require hardware 3d acceleration anyway. I only tried Gnome3 on my ridiculously overpowered desktop though, so didn't really stop to worry about the requirements

I use the Cairo dock on the desktop (Gnome2), set-up more like a traditional toolbar. Not overly fond of the OS-X style "dock". Cario is good though, lots of options to do what you want.

i was dead set against unity from the start, tried it during the alpha builds, but ive been using it for the last 2 weeks now again, and it has grown on me. It can be slow to react to your mouse when you want to switch window, but the new search lens type ui is actually pretty cool when you get the hang of it, lots of new lenses coming out all the time. Its not there yet, but Im happy to say Im converted, Ive been a fan of gnome for many years, but it's nice to see some new innovation also,

im not 100% on how to install macbuntu as ive not done it myself mainly due to my internet allowance ive heard its harder to install on 11.04 but it can be done here is a link http://www.webupd8.org/2010/09/make-ubuntu-look-like-mac-osx-in.html

ya hopefully, it'll speed up, its just teething problems ! ive made the unity bar as small as possible with ccsm, looks much better with icons made as small as possible,

there is a macbuntu 11.04 pre-made if your badly stuck

I've seen Gnome 3 on Fedora and I'm not keen at all, though oddly enough it's pretty good for a media centre running on a TV. Horrendous on a laptop though, feels even more like a Fisher Price interface than Microsoft's original XP theme!

Between KDE4, Gnome 3 and Unity there have been several "revamped" UIs with aspects that I hate. God help us if XFCE starts to go that way

you can still use gnome 2 in 11.04, just pick "classic ubuntu" at the login screen

TBH I like the new Unity. Makes it easy to find things for beginners And is pretty pleasing to the eye for people looking for a change. But that's just my opinion.

10.10 is sufficient for my needs. I might install it on a different partition and if I like it, delete this partition.

good to know that its not just me.. my first reaction was "whaat the f*** it that???". i got rid of it very quickly.

My initial reaction to Unity was also "wtf is this?!!" But after 15 minutes I started to appreciate it. To me, the sidebar thing (which I've set to be always visible) is just like the Cairo dock except on the side. Unity is really optimal with screen space - on my brother's laptop here I gain about 15% extra webpage space due to the nice mashing together of the title bar, the menu bar and the top panel, and the removal of the bottom panel.

I think you should at least give it a 15 minute twirl. If you're anything like me you dismiss new things straight away (I hate change!) but it grew on me pretty fast.

My only reservation is that performance is not fantastic.

EDIT: In fairness, I don't see how you could optimize screen space much more:

I don't like it but could get used to the application menu (File, Edit, etc.) being in the system/desktop toolbar rather than attached to the program itself, but it really bugged me that the menu was hidden until roll-over even when there's more than enough space for it to display. Is there a way to toggle that?

It looks like the only new thing is a crap thing which is not even relevant to Xubuntu users so I don't see any reason to install this, especially knowing that it will cause more headaches with hardware compatibility.
