In the sun today RTE give RTE a new meaning

    REDUCE
    TURBRIDYS
    EARNINGS

here is some extract from the paper

RTE has vowed to slash top presenters salaries.
Chief noel curran warned loaded stars like tubbers, marian finucane, and joe duffy, will have their pay cut by 30 per cent.
This will be complete in the next 2 years.
PAT KENNYS salary will be reduced from €950,976 to €665,683

Will there be a defiance like the last pay cut?

ITS long overdue anyway they have been paid too much for too long.

Here is the NEW RTE logo in the image.

It might be the catalyst for Ryan Tubridy to stay in England.

    Yay

I like the way they say it will be a 2 year completion why two years and not now?
maybe they are hoping certain stars will go and stay in england and some may follow.

Sure isn't Marian Finucane on huge money for a few hours a week?

Cant understand how any of these guys in a country the size of ours earns more the 100 to 150,000.

Why not? That's how Ireland works, cosy clubs where everyone knows everyone else.

I agree the wages should be capped.is it any wonder RTE are broke and us paying a ridiculous licence fee,and be bored to death with certain presenters.

Is Aoife Bannan the new Alison O'Riordan? What a lazy and badly researched article

Kenny was paid €950,976 in 2008 and it was cut to €630,000
    Source from the examiner
The return in profit comes in spite of The Frontline presenter taking a significant salary cut in 2009 to €630,000 from the €950,956 earned in 2008.
Another link from the Irish Times in 2009
Pat Kenny again RTÉ's best paid presenter
Radio and TV broadcaster took home €950,976 Pat Kenny again RTÉ's best-paid presenter, writes ALISON HEALY
Secondly he is not on a salary as he is a contractor and doesn't work directly for RTÉ

So the Irish Sun is pulling Kennys money from 2008 and acting like it's the same figure in 2010 and now it'll be cut
And recycling stories from the Examiner and Irish Times in 2009 and acting like it's front page news

I've no issue with RTÉ cutting the money to pay to their so called stars.

I somehow thought journalists for a national paper were better then this. But then it's the Irish Sun

RTE has vowed to slash top presenters salaries.

RTE will lose star-pay savings by restoring increases to staff
    Saturday June 11 2011
THE savings made by RTE in slashing the pay of its biggest stars will be wiped out when it restores wage increases to general staff within weeks.

All in all they still get paid too much and they will get that loss back by other means regardless.

I dont have a clue how they are being paid such somes. If RTE halve the fees being paid, what are they going to do, go to TV3? learn Irish and go on TG4? They still wont be able to earn the money RTE give them and they wont get a job on British TV. Its wages for the boys, at our expense.

Pat Kenny was on 900k and now on around 500k. There is not a hope in hell he could even get half if even a quarter of that elsewhere on TV3 or TG4, nor would he get much on radio. Gerry Ryan was on 500k and has hardly left a gaping hole at RTE. Joe Duffy is on 250k. Would he get 100k+ at newstalk or Today FM? no. John Kelly 180k. That guy that presents the view on RTE everyweek. The programme is never on earlier than 11 o clock. I doubt, it pulls in the ratings. Mariane finucane is on 400k. Again, she wouldnt get 100k at Today FM or newstalk?

RTE are a law onto themselves. They employ their mates. Guests and audience members for their shows are friendly or family members with employees. The fact Gerry Ryans daughter got a job at RTE despite doing percisely nothing, sums the place up. RTE needs to be sold and a vastly reduced license fee should go to a news service.

I can't stand Tubridy, in fact I can't abide the mediocre inept FF stooge at all. But.

Did he piss in your cornflakes or what?

Id rather pay Ryan Tubridy out of my own pocket than read the sun.

The begrudgers will be out in force in this thread no doubt.

There's a facebook page set up for anyone who thinks the RTE presenters are on way too much.

Had your like. Power to the PEOPLE!

My main source of bafflement is that Marianne Finnucane earns 400k. She hosts a radio show, or am I missing the other duties she has at RTE? At least Pat and Ryan are doing two jobs, even if their performance is questionable at best.

It amazes me how much RTE presenters are still being paid even after the cut-backs over recent times. What other TV/radio companies would pay the likes of Pat Kenny €630,000 pa? It's not like he has the BBC, ITV, CBS etc. chasing after him for his signature. RTE should be paying these presenters a reasonable wage & if they don't accept the terms just hire someone else. They'll quickly come back begging for work after they've entered the real world!

I usually don't bite when the tabs drop a story like this, but your view is the same as mine. Why not cut the wages of the top earners? There not going anywhere and maybe then they might have money to invest in original programming, not that their record is great, or maybe better yet the might lower the TV license fee a smidgen.

I am waiting to see which of the current crop of rte "stars" will try the Gerry Ryan approach and moan and bitch when on air about the hardship that involves in reduced pay packet.

I would be of the opinion you will wait a long time for that scenario to arise.

Nobody in their right mind would try that stunt in these straitened times.

    Not even in RTE;)

taking a zero off the end of all their pay packets would be about right

+1 to all of the above. I read somewhere a few years ago that BBC Wales operates similar services and employs 800 people. RTE employ 3,500 (I stand corrected if wrong).

As you have pointed out - where do they go? And does it really matter anyway? But they're only the tip of an iceberg. The ordinary working person is working flat out not just to repay loans for which they are not responsible - but the exorbitant salaries of TDs, judges, civil servants, consultants, etc.

It has to be tackled across the board.

If anyone was mad enough to try it at least we would get a thread out of it.
