Are there any people on here doing the 100 or will i be one of the few continuing up the long hill and on to roundwood

Reality hit me a few weeks back - so any ill-conceived thoughts of doing the 200 went out the window.

I will probably try to head out c. 7.30.
Any other boardsie's looking to form a nice, orderly wind-break for the 100 route?

Interesting mail from the organisers. I'm doing the 100 myself, but maybe we should all gather round and have an ould pray for our comfort?
    Hi All,
Weather conditions expected for Sunday may make this years Wicklow 200 more
challenging than normal. You may wish to consider this when deciding
which route you take the 200 K or the 100 K.
Your safety is our main concern so keep an eye on the weather forecast.
Please let us know at check-in which route you intend riding.

Also look out for the detour at Glenealy, road to the left is closed so go
    straight on.

weather on met.ie has improved a lot since this morning, whole weather front has moved south and east compared to before. May get really lucky and have it miss the worst over the Irish sea.

anyone know why the road in Glenealy is closed? Pity, it's one of the nicer parts of the entire route

I took delivery of some of this the other day and applied a "dollop" yesterday morning prior to a quick jaunt up SE and SM from Laragh...Jaysus, the knackers were frozen off me!! The hailstones on SM were a relief!!! More designed for Continental temperatures, me thinks!!!

In retrospect, the tag DOES mention cooling properties,it just felt like iofreeze!!

    Yer knackers or the cream?

Still looking forward to this despite all this moaning about the weather!! It's my first W200 so all I want to do is complete the thing. No point in worrying about rain as there's nothing we can do to change it.

If it was going to be scorching hot would you all be giving out about sweat and sunburn!? :pac:

Don't think I could be arsed bringing a backpack so hopefully my one permitted sandwich per food stop will suffice, or else fingers crossed I find a shop without a queue along the route!:)

Hope to bump into a few Boardies along the route - will try to wear my jersey so say hi if you see me! not setting any target time, just want to complete it! Have seen all the hills before except Slieve Mann, so I'm (strangely!) looking forward to seeing what it's like!

Probably not quite as prepared as I'd like to be, so I'll just have to tag along to the back of groups!! :pac:

Just looked at RTEs forecast on TV. Dirty big front making it's way up the Atlantic for Sunday.

This will be my third go at W200. As ever, with a day to go, I'm sitting here going "Why am I doing this again?"

    We all must be mad.

My knackers are definitely more suited to the Continent!

Given that weather forecast I have just seen, I won't have any after Sunday!!:p

A big dollop of this & you'll be fine:
    Assos chamois cream

Yeah, I was going to get this same creme but good people of CSS told me to man up. :D I'm guessing after 120-140km it will be sore anyway - cream or no cream. So feck it.

Only question re clothing I have is should I wear a long sleeve vest under the SS cycling jersey or just keep my rain jacket on all day.

I'll be going for the long sleved top under the jersey. Will probably end up wearing the rain jacket for the day aswell though judging by the forecast.

Does the road being closed at Glenealy add or take from the route distance? Can't be arsed looking in detail at the route map again so if any1 knows would appreciate it.

    original route
    9.0km
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Glencille&daddr=53.0030562,-6.1152387+to:R761&hl=en&geocode=FZo1KAMdCkCi_w%3BFTDDKAMdWrCi_ykrJhwTRLpnSDH8nIVlyCaGXg%3BFYDmKAMd4jqj_w&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=14&via=1&sll=52.998825,-6.097927&sspn=0.024433,0.082998&ie=UTF8&ll=53.004868,-6.096296&spn=0.02443,0.082998&z=14

    replacement route (I imagine)
    7.5km
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Glencille&daddr=R761&hl=en&geocode=FZo1KAMdCkCi_w%3BFYDmKAMd4jqj_w&mra=me&mrsp=1,0&sz=14&sll=53.011737,-6.100845&sspn=0.024426,0.082998&ie=UTF8&ll=52.991902,-6.095695&spn=0.024437,0.082998&z=14

so another 1.5 lost; the Wicklow 192.5

    or this option
    10km
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Glencille&daddr=53.0025934,-6.0973606+to:R761&hl=en&geocode=FZo1KAMdCkCi_w%3BFWHBKAMdMPai_ynp_H-XbrpnSDGbP9cScCHSEA%3BFYDmKAMd4jqj_w&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=14&via=1&sll=53.004093,-6.091232&sspn=0.02443,0.084543&ie=UTF8&z=14
    brings it up to 195

    or even this:
    11.1km
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Glencille&daddr=52.995997,-6.0829588+to:53.0025934,-6.0973606+to:R761&geocode=FZo1KAMdCkCi_w%3BFZ2nKAMdci6j_ymXusULC7pnSDEBbtCKZpsTPQ%3BFWHBKAMdMPai_ynp_H-XbrpnSDGbP9cScCHSEA%3BFYDmKAMd4jqj_w&hl=en&mra=dvme&mrsp=1&sz=13&via=1,2&sll=52.991644,-6.081104&sspn=0.048874,0.169086&ie=UTF8&z=13

The weathers the weather but don't know whether to wear tights or shorts. What are people wearing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,088 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

The Realfeel temp seems to be low all day (6 or 7c) so I think that it is defo a day for the longs.

I would normally plan on shorts with some lotion to get over the first few cold hours but think tomorrow will be more like an October day than June so it seems like a call for the tights.

The offset to that is that with the nplanned rain all day having more wet clothes those not really appeal.

Still undecided but leaning towards tights and winter top

Where's the best place in Dublin to pick up a good value reasonably waterproof jacket on a Saturday? I have a 40 quid windsheeter I normally use, but I'm wondering if maybe that's a silly idea for such a long cycle! It soaks through within about 5-10 minutes in heavy rainhe flipside it also dries out pretty quickly! Decisions decisions!

As for clothes I reckon bib shorts, long sleeve base layer and s/s jersey plus whatever rain protection I bring along!

Well the weather is looking a slight bit better for tomorrow.

I am bringing my thickish waterproof winter cycling jacket, if it's wet and it's howling up Sally Gap at 8am it will feel like it's round about 1-2C I reckon. I was up there in similar conditions recently and would have frozen without it. Also bringing overshoes, my feet were numb for about an hour that time too.

The loss of aero having a thick jacket round my waist is worth not freezing for imo!

Weather has improved considerably. Much less rain, slightly lighter winds and higher temps. Actually won't be able to make a call on this till tomorrow morning.

Met 5 day forecast doesn't show rain hitting wicklow until between 9-12. I'll be wearing arm and leg warmers, and wind proof gilet, and brining waterproof jacket. Also wearing overshoes and heavy gloves. Sally gap was bloody cold last weekend, hope visibility is a bit better. I don't think overheating will be an issue ;)

The variation in different forecasts seems huge, reckon we'll just have to wait and see. Have a great day out everyone, and enjoy it whatever the skies chuck at us. Really looking forward to it now myself.

I think the wind is potentially a bigger issue than the rain. The good news though is it won't be getting up until around lunchtime according to the forecasts. This hopefully means there won't be too much of a headwind heading out (and there will probably be quite a bit of shelter), and coming home it will be more of a tail or sidewind - suggests to me people will be better of starting earlier rather than later

Is there definitely some changes to the route due to road closures? Anyone have a link to a course route reflecting those changes that can be downloaded to a Garmin device, would be handy to have the latest?

Have been on the bike literally 3 times in the past 2 months due to crazy work & study hours so I've never been as unprepared for a big event as I am for this so it'll be a war of attrition. But thankfully stubborness is something you don't lose too easily. Strangely looking forward to it.
