where does he stand on abortion does anyone sensible know?

Non committal would best describe his stance on abortion. He does describe himself as "pro life" though, although hasn't qualified the term or how he uses it that I can establish.

    http://www.senatordavidnorris.ie/blogger/2008/12/statements-on-report-of-sub-committee.html
I will review a couple of the issues, and then get down to neutrality. First, there is the question of abortion. I am sure this will raise its head again. There was in the past a rather sly manoeuvre whereby the Irish people were out manoeuvred by those who, when it suits them, talk about democracy, and a secret protocol was inserted into a previous treaty.
At this point I am not arguing the merits of abortion, one way or the other. I am just as pro-life as anyone. I resent the colonisation of language that is represented by the takeover of these kinds of phrases. I am very much pro-life and my record will show that. As a tutor in Trinity College approximately one girl per year used come to me, probably because she thought I would not be judgmental. That meant about ten during the ten years I was tutor. I gave them information about non-directive counselling agencies. Nine of them did not have an abortion; one of them did. I think if that information had not been available, they all would have had an abortion. In fact, mine was very much a pro-life stance but it has been misinterpreted.
It is a very complex area. I do not intend to get into it, except to say this. I would very much hope if some such protocol is written in that it does not narrow or seek to narrow the already quite narrow judgments of the Supreme Court. It is important that we do not seek further to constrict. I will leave it at that.

According to an interview he did in 1597, he said he's for abortion as long as the aborted foetus is given to Norris to eat as he believes it gives him sexual powers.

I would have voted for him until the last few days, don't really care about all the smear stuff, it is obvious he is a decent human and that people are just trying to hurt his campaign.

However i don't feel he conducted himself in a very statesmanlike way over the last few days, he was defending himself a bit too aggressively, almost shouting on some occasions just didn't seem like the type of person who should be a president, however there is nobody else in the race yet that I would vote for either.

Ditto, there's nobody i can vote for either. We need a few new candidates to enter the race.

Do you not think though, that he has been so aggressively attacked? He has defended himself without mudslinging, that to me just shows how much class he actually has!

Took the words out of my mouth.
I'm just surprised he's managed to hold back as well as he has done.
A lesser person would have reacted earlier in a way that the rag papers would have loved!

    Ah great minds...:D

I don't know how he's been so restrained! I'm fairly sure I wouldn't of been!

I agree he defended himself without mudslinging, but he just didn't defend himself with the decorum i would expect from a statesman, he seemed a bit flustered and agitated in his interviews, which he has every right to be, but a president needs to be able to hide that when in public and not get roused so easily.

I'm disappointed as he would have gotten my vote until the last few days, by the way, I am not the only one who feels like this, others have made the same point to me. I feel sorry for him because he does not deserve the muck that was thrown at him, he strikes me as one of the few politicians who is not in it to look after number 1.

To be fair, when he is public, he won't be facing an interviewer possibly out to catch him up, under studio conditions.
Given the daft stuff he's had to put up with from some people that have been clearly out to get him for their own private reasons, I have more regard for him - not less.
He has shown he's more human - not just another non-feeling stone faced politician that we all see daily crossing our screens.
Its that passion that is sorely missed from politics today. Its become de-humanised too much. Too many political automatons that make us all just numbers on spreadsheets - not individual humans with individual feelings!
He brings life back into the political arena by reminding us inadvertently that we are are only as good as our inner-failings and being human, will allow us.

He's brought passion where previously there might have been stoicism.

Politics is dirty and presidential elections can be especially dirty.

You come across back stabbing party members in cut throat selection committees and get heckled and shouted down at local and general elections.

He deals with none of this in academia and the halls of the Seanad.

This whole process will toughen him up. And more attacks will happen before the election is over, he has learned a lot. Learned the hard way I suppose.

He has done his mudslinging, now he wants to be elected by the public, not like how one is elected to the Seanad.

He called the Pope a Nazi because like every German youth he was forced to join Hitler Youth.

*David Norris logic - every German of a certain age is a Nazi...

He can't sling mud now as he is fighting for survival in his bid for the presidency.
    He is not Presidential material.

You know sometimes when people say words there is meaning beyond the dictionary definition...

I believe Norris was referring to, for the most part, the popes views on certain subjects, which he happens to share with the Nazis.

At first I wasn't sure but with what the mail published and the comments about the pope, this is without doubt a smear campaign.

So that leaves me with little choice but to vote for him.

Like how terrible it was was when the Nazi's killed his cousin for having Down Syndrome?
How all life should be protected?
    Proper healthcare and education?
Care for those who are on the margins in society?
    Treat people with respect?

I would think David Norris has more in common with what he called the Pope.

You haven't seen all the candidates and you are deciding on who to vote for?

Your choice will be for who you feel needs sympathy?

I have decided he is worth voting for.

I like a man who speaks the truth, even though it scares most people.

I believe his views on certain people and what little respect he shows them are the issue... did you read the interview/book/article where this is stated or do you just know he called him a Nazi?

The important bit and it was when John Paul II was Pope "behind him is Ratzinger, who is, in his mindset, a Nazi.”"

We don't need a divisive man who shows hate for president.
