i have a restore disc a leopard disc. And I have a snow leopard disc. So if I wanted to do a restore I would have to install leopard, then upgrade to snow leop[ard, then upgrade to lion (presumably), then do a system restore. Thats all pretty painful

No. You can restore/fresh install from SL disc. No need to put in the Leopard one. Done it plenty of times.

I'd very surprised if there wasn't an option to buy the lion upgrade on a disk where downloading that size of a file isn't an option for people, for a probably higher price tho!

Pleased to see Lion will be cheap.
Airdrop looks like a worthy competitor for Dropbox
iOS 5 looks good too although I don't know if want to go back to having an unjailbroken device.

I like the sound of iTunes Match. I have 80G of music, very little of which is from the iTunes store. Will people here use it?

Looks like it's going to be even cheaper than we expected, only €23.99!

That's a fantastic price, especially when you consider all previous upgrades prior to SL cost €100+.

Looks like iTunes Match is only in the US for the moment.

Might be useful. You still need Snow Leopard though!

Couple of vaguely related hardware questions if ye don't mind:

I've not looked too closely yet, but Lion would appear to have a lot of touchy feely stuff in it's arsenal. I may be in the minority here but I find the wireless mouse with my iMac to be an ergonomic disaster. It's much too small for my meathooks, meaning that using swipe gestures is pretty uncomfortable. Is the magic trackpad a worthwhile upgrade/add-on would you think? Or do many macbook users find themselves reverting to using a mouse anyway?

Step 1 if/when I upgrade will be backing up my current stuff. I have a 500gb external drive that would probably do the trick but I have been thinking for a while about getting an airport express base station to cut down on wires and to improve on the 802.11g router I'm using at the moment. Am I right in thinking though, that a 1TB time capsule is basically an airport extreme with a hard drive in it? If so, the price differential ain't too bad. And I'm really getting used to the seamless way Apple stuff integrates, so it could tempt me.

    Any opinions?

I haven't used the Magic Trackpad myself, but I do find the multi-touch trackpad on my Macbook to be excellent. However, it's no replacement for a mouse imo. Dragging and dropping is a lot easier with a mouse.

Yup. But you can connect an external drive to the regular AEBS and use it with Time Machine as well. The main advantage of a Time Capsule is that it's all-in-one. There's seems to be a lot of reliability problems with the Time Capsule which (along with the price) would turn me off it personally.

I dont see why you would turn off icloud - you use email and other web services?

Looking at roundup videos, Lion is very slightly growing on me. There are a few things that I could always change with commands or tweaks that will come out to revert some features back.

No 24 euro no chance, I wish apple didnt charge for software when their hardware costs so much.

I only use the trackpad on the macbook pro, never used the magic anything and dont want to use a mouse.

wow! that certainly is great. I was waiting for the $/€ parity thing that has often been commonplace!

Also looks like the first version macbooks are out the boat on this one.....

Fair enough their hardware is expensive but seriously, you've got to be kidding me. Its a brand new operating system. €24 that can be installed on up to 5 computers if I remember correctly.

How much would the equivalent upgrade cost for windows(5 times the cost for a similar upgrade path for 3 machines)? for Adobe creative suite, Microsoft office etc. Look at the price of Iphoto, Imovie, any shareware program.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,710 ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

    Yeah, €24 is nothing.

Cost of previous OS X upgrades that I've had to fork out for:

    10.0 - I can't remember, but it was definitely €130+
10.1 - "free" but I think I had to pay for postage from Apple (it was CD only)
    10.2 - €169 (seriously)
    10.3 - €129
    10.4 - €129
    10.5 - €129
    10.6 - €29 (I actually got this for €9 via the up-to-date program)

I also remember getting Mac OS 8. My mother paid for it so I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but it was at least 100 punts.

I've got a magic trackpad for when I use my macbookpro on a monitor which I do rarely. Have to say - its is freaking awesome. Much bigger than the built in trackpad - which I have to say I find far superior to a mouse. Haven't used a mouse in years - I actually gave away my external mouse!!

I would be intrested to see how iCloud works

They are giving you 5GB and say is sufficient, even though most devices are sold with 16GB, so most people will have at least 16GB on files be that movies, music , photos etc....

So how does 16GB of files get transformed into 5GB data slot

I see that iCloud only stoes your purchased stuff and not your own ripped stuff..thus the €25 for iTunes Match which will probably give you the extra GB

    DT

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

Music in iTunes doesn't get synced, so it doesn't count towards your 5GB of storage. It's just available from all devices you enter your iCloud details on to download from the iTunes store as you see fit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,710 ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Photos aren't counted in the 5GB either. See the Photo Stream feature. It doesn't permanently store the files in the cloud though, it just holds on to them long enough to sync with all your devices by keeping a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos for 30 days.

So as far as I can see, Apple won't be offering any extra gigs for storing documents, email, etc. 5GB is all you get. Music and (eventually) movies are covered by other features. iTunes in the Cloud covers all purchased music for free and iTunes Match covers your non-iTunes music. Irish users will have to wait for both of these, of course.

there's a menu item in iOS 5 that allows you to buy more storage, it's not enabled at the moment though.

Really? That's cool. There was no mention of in the keynote or on the website so I assumed we would be stuck with 5GB.

Haven't upgraded to iTunes 10.3 yet in case there were any early issues, anyone come across any problems since installing it?

I was all for using the trackpad with my iMac at work. I figured I'd spend a day getting the feel for it, I'm used to using one on a macbook, but the use is much different – browsing V Adobe apps. Sad to say I found it horrible (drag selecting is a pain).

I keep my music backed up on two hard drives just in case one fails, I'm wondering If I get the itunes match service does that mean I won't have to keep a back up as it's all online?
What if I lost all my music, would you be able to download it all again for free from itunes?

I assume so. iTunes Match claims to store your entire iTunes library on the cloud, either iTunes copies or uploaded from your own library. So in the case of a hard drive failure it would just be a matter re-syncing. This would be very handy indeed.

But keep in mind that we may be waiting a while before iTunes Match is available here.

You can boot straight into safari.

How was this not a major part of the announcement. I will actually buy this now, I know its not quite a chrome os equivalent but still handy.

Why would someone want to do this ?
(Not having a go....I just don't get it)
