UPERTINO, California—May 31, 2011—Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software - Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.

Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for Lion. With all these rumours of it being sold via the Mac App Store, perhaps it will be available immediately.

    iCloud - finally.

And Jobs is doing the keynote, which is notable because if we were to believe the tabloids he should be dead by now.

The new Airs are due very soon so they might get a mention as well, but a quiet release is more likely.

I think all the main details of it will be finalised - system requirements, release date, new features, etc. But I don't think they'll release it over the App Store the same day. It's just not their style, is it?

Maybe we will have the iSteve, a la Max Headroom!

Interested to see what the do with Thunderbolt and how they plan to integrate the gesture part of Lion into desktops.

I'm curious to see what sort of Thunderbolt peripherals show up during the show myself. I'm waiting patiently for one of these.

Odds on it will be a case of 'buy a trackpad'

Looking forward to Lion - finally full screen apps! And the last reason to go back to windoze is cast aside!

No. They will have to bake it in to the os to work with the tackpads and mighty mouse.

iCloud is the only thing I care about tbh, Lion looks meh mostly as I am not liking the screwing up of spaces and exposé in it.

How much do you reckon those thunderbolt enabled externals will cost?

I think iCloud, and any Cloud service in general, are very over-rated. Personally, I have found that they sound good on paper, but in reality I end up never using them once I sign up to them. I can see how corporations may use them, but I don't think there is a big consumer need for them. But I am very interested to see what Apple come up with and what innovative features they come up with.

I'm very interested to see what Apple come up with in iOS5, I'm hoping for big changes. New hardware to along with it would be nice, but looks like we'll have to wait til September.

iOS 5 is a dead cert, along with iPhone 5. Mac Pro and Mac Mini should be due a bump while Lion is finally due it's unveiling; I'll expect it to be on sale around mid September time.

Next gen iPhone isn't expected until September. And it's quite clear from the press release that this is going to be a software focused event, so any hardware announcements are unlikely. The Air perhaps but that's all.

I would love to be able to sync my entire iTunes to a cloud. Because, like a fool, I still don't have an external hard-drive to back it all up to :p

Still can't figure out why this is the holy grail to alot of people. I can see why you'd want to do a backup, but not to play from the cloud. Or does everyone have to have their entire collection with them 24/7? Is there something Im missing?

A Sandy Bridge based air would put me in quite an awkward situation. I got a Pro for work, but having an 11" Air for carrying around and at home would be hard to resist.

I wouldn't like to deal with 20+ GB of music being uploaded somewhere over my internet connection and I have a 2 megabit upload rate. Doing that first rsync of my iTunes library from my Macbook Pro to my NAS over Wireless N at 6 megabytes per second was bad enough, let alone a fraction of that.

And I doubt it would be free!

Cloud stuff should be totally transparent to the user. Despite being a bit crap, I've subbed to .Mac/MobileMe for years, simply because my bookmarks, contacts and calendars sync across all my devices.

Everyone is talking about the cloud these days and they don't even know what it is. Believe me, I develop applications that use cloud based services and it's just the next Web 2.0 style buzzword that people talk about without understanding and get on the bandwagon.

They don't usually announce product refreshes unless there's a major hardware change. The iMac and Macbook Pro upgrades this year were just silently slipped into the store, I'd imagine that to be the case for the Macbook Air as well. They probably won't change much bar throw in some ULV Sandy Bridge chips and a Thunderbolt port.

Personally I'm much more excited to see iOS5 and Lion than anything else. Some of the new features on OSX Lion are fairly gimmicky for desktop use but for laptops it's looking like a great upgrade.

It all seems to be moving to 3/4g coverage and it is interesting to see what apple offer considering they have been working on it for a while and usually dont do things half assed.

In Ireland even on billpay you would have to be loaded and or mental to use it (well it wont be available here anyway) as 3g is way to expensive to be streaming music around.

According to AI, Lion users will get certain basic iCloud services for free. They also say that Lion may be priced relatively low.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 623 ✭✭✭David086

I'd say we'll expect iOS5, maybe a Macbook refresh, iCloud and OSX Lion. Will be interesting to see what Lion will be like, Snow Leopard was pretty.... meh.

I'll be very surprised to see the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s as it's been said that it's been delayed until the end of the year.

Apparantly, it scans your library, doesnt upload it, just what tracks you have, and then duplicates it online.

That is actually quite impressive. It explains why it took them so long to get all the big publishers!

If this were the case, as we could have something like Spotify from Apple integreted into iOS and OSX devices... Well, I don't think I need to post the "Shut up and take my money" pic...!

I cant find the source of it, but i read it on twitter.
If you have a copy of something which isn't fantastic, say for example a scratched dick, or cough crappy torrent cough, it replaces it with a higher quality version.
    macrumors was possibly the source.

Not impressed with Lion, probably wont install even if its free which it wont be it will be cheap enough but I doubt free.

Hopefully they will give away mobileme for free and some free storage on icloud to add in addition to my growing dropbox storage.

I would probably put money on it that you'll need Lion to use all the features on whatever the iCloud offers.

Ye but I could live without it, pretty much no matter what they offer if it means I have to use Lion.

    Why all the hate ?

I'm looking forward to Lion. I consider some of the iOS-inspired additions, such as LaunchPad and full-screen, to be unnecessary, but they are easily ignored if you don't want to use them. Mission Control, however, seems like a welcome integration of Spaces, Expose and Dashboard, which I think was needed in order to make them more accessible to new users. Looking forward to the new version of Mail as well.

I just hope that the UI is consistent. It's been all over the place since 10.3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,246 ✭✭✭conor.hogan.2

Not hate, ive just got very used to how I use exposé and spaces and the new "blah blah" (transmission control or whatever its called) screws that up for me.

I just wish they went the windows 8 way of making the convergence of touch os's and desktop os's an optional extra and not bake them into the os.

I just hope to God they've replaced Samba with something better and more reliable. It was infuriating having Finder crash every time I tried to connect to a PC.

Hmm looking forward then to next week. My solid state drive should arrive and hopefully Lion will be awesome and my beastie here will have a whole new lease of life:D

Actually pretty psyched for this now. Last year iOS4 got pretty much an entire event to itself, and the cramming of a few things together this year suggests either (a) they don't have enough on each individual thing to make a big enough deal out of any individual aspect of the company (eg. iCloud, iOS, OSX, etc), or else (b) this is all about integration between the platforms, and the best way to show off iCloud is to have it at an event that also demos their mobile and desktop OSs anyway.

    Either way, I haz popcorns.

This starts at 6pm today. I've started a Keynote discussion thread over on the AMD forum as well. It's up to yourselves, but given how much busier that forum is, it might be better if we all gravitate over there for the keynote discussion rather than have it be segregated between here and there. It's times like this we could do with a general Apple forum. But with all the iOS features being added to OS X, I feel like this event is mostly directed at iOS users anyway. This actually pleases me as after this event I think we may see an increase in the "halo effect" that previously boosted Mac sales.

So what live blog is everyone going to be following on? I think I'll go with Engadget

It's difficult to predict which one is going to be the fastest and most reliable, so I usually have them all running in different tabs and switch back and forth.

Gizmodo's live blog seems to be flying so will probably start off with them.

This has been floating around for a while and no one knows if it's a hoax or not, but it claims to be streaming living video of the event at 6pm; clicky

Might be worth keeping an eye on just on the off chance that it's legit!

    EDIT: Yup it's a fake!

So now that Lion is only available through the Mac App Store how will older users get their hands on the new version of OSX?

Like me for instance I have Leopard and never bothered updating it to Snow Leopard therefor not getting the Mac App Store. But now I want Lion, do I have to pay $30 for Snow Leopard and then another 30 for Lion? There must be another way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,101 ✭✭✭NUTZZ

Looks like Leopard users may have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first in order to get Lion! Clicky

Given the low price, Lion is obviously an upgrade license for SL and not a full license. I guess we'll have to wait and see what options (if any) Apple are going to give Leopard users. The last time Apple offered a box set for Tiger users, but it was a bit pricey. You might be better off just getting SL first. Total cost would be about €60 which is less than Leopard cost (it was about €120 if I recall correctly). Wait and see.

The iTunes back up via iCloud, iTunes Match, is unfeckingreal:)

According to Apple, Lion will create a recovery partition on your hard drive. I suspect this is how it will install Lion by default. You download the Lion installer app, it creates the partition (similar to Bootcamp) and then boots up using that partition to perform the installation. However, I assume it will also allow you the option to burn a DVD in case of hard drive failure or installing on another machine.

How Apple will facilatate people with poor internet connnections remains to be seen. 4GB is a lot for someone on a crappy connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭fasty

It certainly comes close to some provider's data caps!

Hallowed be my NTL 20 meg!

I've just downloaded the iOS5 beta and iTunes 10.5 but I'm a bit afraid to install it. You can go back from an iOS update (edit, no you can't!!!), but upgrading iTunes is for keeps!

I had better allow a dvd cause a recovery partition ain't much use to me if my hard drive ****s itself

if your hard drive ****s itself you'll just download it again for free on the mac app store, i'm sure you can put the lion installer on an external hdd as well.

You also have the restore disc that came with your Mac for any hard drive emergencies. Assuming you have a backup, you wouldn't be doing a clean install after a hard drive failure anyway. You'd just be restoring from the backup.

I agree that recovery partitions are kinda useless though. Separate flash storage built into the Mac would be far better. Especially for all those foolish people who manage to lose or throw away their restore disc.

i have a restore disc a leopard disc. And I have a snow leopard disc. So if I wanted to do a restore I would have to install leopard, then upgrade to snow leop[ard, then upgrade to lion (presumably), then do a system restore. Thats all pretty painful

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Agreed, which is why there will almost certainly be an option to burn a Lion disc. I assume you also keep a backup though, right?
