Depends. The social welfare system is not as generous or as fair as people think. Just recently, here on boards, there has been quite substantial anecdotal evidence that testifies to the inequalities and inefficiencies that permeate the system.

You could say that the law is the law, bury your head in the sand, and report everyone but that doesn't make it the right thing to do. Laws are made by people and are often enough discriminatory and sometimes just plain wrong.

Or, you could attempt to judge the situation for yourself. The problem with this method is that if everybody does this, we end up with a situation were the law itself becomes irrelevant.

    It's a tough call.

Anybody who can't keep themselves to themselves are nothing but dirt, anybody cheating the system will be eventually caught out there's no need to be a busybody about it.

I don't think it's fair to report anyone.

You can never be 100% certain what is going on in another persons life and what their exact financial circumstances are. And if somebody is genuinely having a tough time of it, well do you really want to be the príck that got the social welfare down on their back and possibly got their payments stopped??

Preventing social welfare fraud is the responsibility of the social welfare officers. I agree that there should be a better system to catch the frauds but it shouldn't be from nosy neighbours who probably have a personal grudge against the person they're reporting.

I would certainly hope not, the SW Dept employs inspectors for that.

"Anyone cheating the system will be eventually caught out": Eh this is Ireland.... *points at long list of crooks that got away with it*

Where do you think this magic money is coming from? It's not just money from the government, it's money coming from our pockets.

you never know when you might be unemployed i wouldn't get on your high horse about who's pocket it's coming from.

Yes, and that same money is used to pay people in the social welfare offices whose job it is to prevent this from happening. People will always try to scam the system, that's just life. But if the social welfare office were doing their jobs correctly then eventually these crooks would be caught out.

What? This is a thread about reporting social welfare fraud, not about people who are unemployed and entitled to it.

And just for your information, I couldn't find a job in the field I wanted to go into when I finished college so I worked in a chipper instead of signing on the dole!

I know several people claiming social welfare and working and while it annoys me I would not report them.
I hope they will see for themselves how wrong it is.
These are often the very ones giving out about public servants etc but can't see what they are doing is fraud.

depends. driving an audi and taking the piss about how theyre gettin loads of nixers - yes.
out on a never ending quest for even part time work and letting slip that they manage the odd bit of cash work - no.

No, I wouldn't report anyone doing it. It's, despite other peoples tax money points, not my problem. I also don't need the hassle should I be suspected of reporting someone. As someone said, there are SW inspectors to do the job.

I've worked with people who've gloated about it, but, in the long run it's their risk. Things catch up with people.

Not directed at the OP, but to be honest, people who constantly bitch and whine about it, but do no reporting themselves bore me to death. Put up or shut up, simple as that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,636 ✭✭✭dotsman

Of course I would report it. They're stealing from me and every other honest tax-paying citizen (and every legitimate social welfare recipient).

If they walked into your house and stole your tv, would you just leave it at that or would you report them? Just because the theft is indirect doesn't make it any less damaging or criminal.

Of course, some scumbags will do the usual "don't be a rat". But I have a different perspective. As far as I'm concerned, it is those thieves, and those who assist them by turning a blind eye, who are the rats, stealing from the rest of us.

I would think the people cheating the system is dirt.

how long are they claiming before they are caught ?

say a man has to work a sunday to get €40 extra to get a little bit more food for the week because his welfare is paying the mortgage, then he loses his social welfare and has no income to pay for anything thus putting his children in poverty and possibly losing his house,do you not think it's a bit rich for somebody to report that man for a stupid principle?

Let the people employed to find the frauds find them.

so it's ok to be on top of another persons business?,fair enough, the problem is in the investigative system and i don't think it's the job of a neighbour to bring hardship on another person.

The country is on it's knees and the people who remain in work are under incredible pressure and will be forced to pay more taxes in he future. People working and claiming social welfare are stealing from those people who are paying their taxes.

I think there is greater fraud still going on in the country that needs to be investigated. Dole fraud does account for a few million per year but I think we still have bigger fish to fry.

Report it. I have a pain in my a$se with USC charges and another budget due in December..and now water charges and a household charge. The money going to those who are fraudulently claiming Social Welfare should be paying for the stuff my USC costs are paying.

Report them. Here's the link. It couldn't be simpler...NOTE it is to report 'Possible' Fraud. If your report comes to nothing, then the person won't be prosecuted...

alot of people are in fact just getting their contributions back and not actually stealing from anybody that's one point i'd like to get across. And you also have to realise that your own government is wasting alot more money rashly compared to some people on the dole, the millions spent 2 weeks ago on 2 people coming to Ireland springs to mind.

Hate the game not the player (i alway's wanted to say that :D)

It's doesn't have to be a neighbour it can be anyone. The problem is we all have had to take pay cuts, working does not mean we are rich, it just means we have a job.

taking all the extra benefits into consideration people on welfare can sometimes be better of than those who are working.
