Won't be long now before Norris says the words 'mature recollection'!

If you compare the usual suspects reaction to Norris and his off the cuff remarks about classical pedophilia and the reaction to Ken Clarke to 'classic rape' you can see how far the left are willing to bury their heads.

Norris, his stupid statement aside is an self aggrandizing, self important, shameless self promoter and a total embarrassment. I hope he doesn't win, but then the Paddies capacity to ignore reality and vote for the likes of Mick Wallace and Jedward, because sure aren't they a bit of craic!' should never be underestimated.

    Yes, welcome President Norris:

    He just lost my vote!!!
If I'd have known there was a photo of him out there like that I would never have considered him in the first place.
What a shocker - dirty old man.

What this country needs is more people like you - showing us all the error of our ways. Well played - you should get into politics!

I must say I am surprised in a way at Norris's popularity. I personally always liked him but I genuinely didn't expect this thread to be as positive as it is.

I had thought that maybe people, while not homophobic, might not have been comfortable with having a gay man as President. I am happy to have been proven wrong!

And at least the majority of those who wouldn't vote for him (of whom there appears to be few) have proper reasons rather than good old fashioned homphobia, which I was worried about too.

I would however like to know where people are getting the idea he supports paedophilia? What I took from his comments are that he does not understand or condone at all but has no issue with older ADULT men and younger ADULT men having relationships, which is fine as far as I can see.

Also what was the woman on Joe Duffy saying about the Senator? I must have missed it.

I couldn't find the word ADULT in that piece (the contentious bit).

David Norris is living proof that any old blow in with a posh accent who reads Joyce can fool our nation. Glad he got found out in time. Do we really need another 'do gooder' as President?

No. We need a Bertie. Or a P Flynn. Some shite that wouldn't read anything only a balance sheet or a charge sheet and whose idea of culture is christmas lights round the dance hall he built in a bird sanctuary.

No, we need another Mary, another constitutional lawyer who doesn't think there is something to be said for classic paedophelia...

It says more about your attitude when you dismiss the common vernacular culture enjoyed by the majority of the populace. Or is only the likes of Joyce seen as culture because its an inaccessable high art form?

No, we need another Mary, ...

No, another Dick Spring era gobshite is the last thing we need.

I see you're another one who hasn't a bogs notion what he was on about.

Theres nothing inaccessible about a good deal of Joyces work.

The "common vernacular culture" is reading balance sheets, charge sheets and building dodgy enterpries on land/in areas that would, in other countries be protected......Hmmmmm. You seem to have entirely missed the point

Whats wrong with having a constitutional lawyer for someone who is meant to be the guardian of the constitution, The two Marys have been excellent presidents particularly the incumbent. Someone like them would be more suited to the job than someone like Norris and his quite frankly outlandish views.

I don't know much about him to be honest, though I'm learning more. I'd like to get looking into the candidates more to see who's who but I hear many good things about David Norris. He does seem very intelligent and he seems genuine which is rare in politics.

I do need to read up on the candidates but I do have my eye on David Norris.

A portrait and Ulysses are not easy reads by a long shot. And yes dance halls decorated by christmas lights are part of the vernacular culture of this country. Many more people enjoy this culture than those who read joyce. To dismiss it and the politicians that identify with it is elitest.

The incumbent I have nothing against, the previous mary we could do without a repeat of.

HLB is malicious, a moaning motormouth with a past which stifled and closed down restaurants and now like a returning weed, back to do no good.

    The roof wasn't big enough.

I was under the impression that a lot of JJ's writing was specifically all about the so called vernacular culture of the time (for example, "Dubliners").

Elections are supposed to be elitist. Otherwise we end up with Healy-raes.

    It certainly wasn't big enough!

What I can't understand about HLB and Enoch Burke is that David Norris has faught and campaigned very hard for equality, political and personal rights, FOR EVERYONE, no matter colour, race, gender or creed! These are rights that they (and his other detractors) take full advantage of, and give him no credit for, and rights that he would still protect even though they do nothing but attack him.

It was about the vernacular but it (Portrait and Ulysses I'm thinking of here) was written in a stream of consciousness style that makes it inaccessible to most.

This is beside the point and has nothing to do with Norris unsuitability for the Aras

I'm afraid she did give him credit for his campaign, she contributed to it.

I know, in my attempt to make a point I probably over did it slightly, but I will say my point does still stand for Enoch Burke (burke by name...) and the rest of his ultra right wing detractors.

Now I'm getting a bit tired, so sarcasm radar is a bit banjaxed, but please tell am I right in gauging sarcasm in that statement?
