no definitely not and anyone that thinks having sex with kids is ok should seek election on the moon just browse over norris,s interview with magill

There was a fairly good conversation at the following link. I feel your opinion is a misinformed one and I'd like you to look at the facts before forming an opinion.

There were also smear campaigns against him here too, all untrue of course. What exactly was it about any of his comments you disliked?

Apparently she had other stuff too which the R.T.E. programme director refused to let her air, but she will say it somewhere else i'd say.
Why do you reckon he didn't sue her for libel if its untrue ?

So she's coming out with all this now? I don't give her an OUNCE of credibility, why didn't she do all this at the time she published the interview. He has continually said it was taken out of context. He's an honest man and I believe him.

I'm sure she will say it somewhere else, but I doubt she's got the irrefutable proof she claims she has, rather than tapes that she isn't sure will work, or can't find or whatever it is! I don't think he's sued becuase he's admitted he said it, but that it was taken totally out of context. Im not sure that's sueable (if that's actually a word :o )

The Irish Times claimed in an artical that he called the leaders of the Rising terrorists. He objected and denied the claims and they printed a retraction.

Thank you Strobe, I knew that, I just wanted to see if Sgt Peppers knew that. To just post a statement that, had he read through the thread he would have realised the paper printed a retraction. His post just smacked a bit of ignorant sh1t stirring :)

I always knew there was something a bit queer about him! Could never put my finger on it till I read this thread!

I think Higgins would make a great president. He's reserved, stately and doesn't speak out of turn.

Higgins lost his temper with Michael Graham live on Newstalk and called him a w**ker :D

As for Norris, I think an eloquent and excitable bon viveur with a bit of mischief about him would nicely reflect some of our more appealing national characteristics.

lmao, I never knew that.. love to hear it. He's not wrong anyway =p

I do agree that Norris would be a breath of fresh air in the Áras.. but would he not be required to be somewhat subdued in the role?

Another thing I'd be concerned about is how foreign diplomats view him and his manner. You might think 'well if they don't take kindly to him that's their loss' but realistically it's the other way round in terms of fostering and solidifying relations with trade partners etc. Something which is going to be of the utmost importance over the next few years.

I didn't know it either, it's funny, and I have to say kudos to Michael D

Norris would be great in the Aras, he was saying in an interview that if he does get in, he won't be gagged. He reckons that because he is an independent candidate with no party affiliations he's not going to be towing any party line.

Whether he can do that now I don't know, but thats what he said!

Michael D wouldn't tow a party line either, the man is the epitome of a statesman, not just Irelands Stephen Fry.

Norris has his strong points no doubt, as a scholar, wit and all round character.

As for taking on the role of president, no, I don't think he is suited to that whatsoever.

In b4 Norris would love it in the Arás joke.

Was funny, he and Michael Graham got into a heated argument during an outside broadcast of 'The Right Hook' in a pub in Galway City.

Mary Robinson set the template for future presidents to be able to express an opinion and even advocate for change, albeit in a more nuanced manner appropriate to the office.

I assume you read his Magill interview that the poster is referring to? Let's just say some of the things Norris said were extremely questionable, and he later backtracked and tried to clarify them himself

I met him once, before i knew who he was. It was my first year in college in dublin and i was lost in dublin trying to meet my boyfriend and i asked him for directions. He was such a genuinely lovely man!

But now that i actually know who he is i would definitely vote for him. not because he gave me directions once lol, but because i think he has great integrity and intellect. He's like irelands equivalent to stephen fry and sure who couldnt admire that!

    This
    http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/republic-of-ireland-should-rejoin-commonwealth-says-senator-14814353.html#ixzz0obUSziME
is why I'm not voting for him. He's seems to love so much about England that he should consider running for public office over there.
A politician hoping to become Ireland's next president has called for the Republic to join the Commonwealth
Senator David Norris , who plans to run in the country's presidential race, said membership would reap enormous benefits.
Speaking at the launch of the book Ireland and the Commonwealth: Towards Membership, at the Royal Irish Academy, he said that although joining the Commonwealth is unlikely to be top of the Irish political agenda, "should it be demonstrated that this is what the Irish people wish I believe that it could be accomplished with a minimum of fuss".
The majority of members are of the Commonwealth, he said, were now republics, with the Queen's position largely titular.
"New successful applicants such as Rwanda have recently joined the Commonwealth even though they were never a British colony. It would produce very useful cultural, financial and political contacts for this country and among other things would enable Irish athletes to compete in the Commonwealth Games, something which I am sure they would welcome."
The book, produced by the Reform Group, is a collection of articles, debates and speeches, generally supportive of Ireland’s membership of the Commonwealth.
The Reform Group believes that the Republic of Ireland should, as a sovereign state, cultivate its "already close relationship with the peoples of the Commonwealth by becoming members of the association".
It argues that this would not only be strategically beneficial but would be an important symbol of a new confident state "at ease with its own identity and free from the animosities of the past".
Other contributors to the book also voiced their support for the move.
Professor Robert Martin, an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College Dublin, said: "There is a natural bond between Ireland and the Asian, African and Caribbean countries of the Commonwealth. It should be strengthened and institutionalised. Commonwealth membership would be the best means of achieving these ends."
Author and journalist Mary Kenny said: "It would enlarge Ireland’s influence to join the Commonwealth – and enhance the sense of inclusivity in the Irish nation."

He's not talking about the Commonwealth of Realms, which accepts Elizabeth 2 as head of state rather the Commonwealth of Nations which is not a political union.

Imo we need another poll to see what the latest scandal/smear/truth/ has done to his prospects for election,

While she's very welcome for an auld visit every now and then, lest not get carried away. Its still a commonwealth with an unelected hereditary leader. I really don't see any benefits to it either, economically. We have enough of our own quangos without getting involved in an international one.

The office of the president should be above personal political agendas like this. I think our previous presidents (too young to remember the others) have fulfilled their duties very well in this regard. What we don't need is someone who wants to "do" something as president. Or go for sly stunts like Norris and say they will do it for free. A stunt like that cheapens the office and disrespects previous holders of the office.
