Alternatives to Griselinia/escallonia hedges

Cut down a Griselinia and escallonia hedge last week. It did not survive the winter. I'll wait untill the Winter to re-plant. I only want the hedge to be abot 4 or 5 feet - what would be the best?

Put down 300 Privet hedge plants 2 years ago. Thanks fully have only lost 6. The rest I cut back last summer to thicken them out, now they are well over 2ft each.

beech?
