I live here in Tenerife. That guy was/is mentally disturbed. He wasn't right in the head.Everyone over here was shocked that this could happen but they caught the guy immediately.
Apart from this incident,Tenerife is a great place to live.Safer than Dublin,my home town.Just take reasonable precautions, like you would at home and you will be fine.If you do come over check out the band CRUSH. :)

    Care to elaborate?

Personally i've been there several times and think its a beautiful place.

Granted down around the Veronica strip is a bit of a dive IMO but some people love that and each to their own.

Would i be right to assume you just don't like package holiday resorts?

To to be fair to the chap, that wasn't text-speak, it's just the level of spelling that a lot of people come out of the education system with (myself included many years ago).

There was text speak in his post I replied where you're quoting me. He said "ppl" and 2 fcuks".

But yes I agree with your main point; and our education system is not the shining light that most people seem to think it is.
If it was we wouldn't have droves of people leaving college (never mind second level!), having CV's binned by potential employers because they're littered with spelling and punctuation errors.
Though that's not just bad English, that's compounded by laziness in not running it through a spell check even.

    Sorry, going OT here.

    So many incorrect assumptions :D
First off I'm female. I'm not from Wicklow, as I've already stated. I went to a run of the mill secondary school, neither posh nor scumsville. I did go to college, but not Trinity. The intelligent part I'll allow ;)

That particular nutcase is now behind bars, as for the remainder.... you're just as likely to meet them here as there!

Why? Do they holiday here? NOBODY'S SAFE!!!

yes tenerife is really dangerous now, just like rural canada is because it too had a beheading not that long ago

yeah tenerife is a beautiful island, the starco and veronicas area of playa de las americas isnt the nicest what with the chinese women trying to sell you toys, african men trying to sell you handbags and sunglasses and the british reps trying to pull you into their bar/club, it gets very annoying after the 40th person so i would recommend any tenerife newbie just to avoid that area altogether

there is loads of things to see and do in tenerife from watersports to visiting mount teide, masca, the banana plantations, Los Gigantes (which make irelands cliffs of moher look short) or simply watching the dolphins ride the bow wave of your boat and you sail into harbour

God yeah I remember that. Horrible. Poor chap :(
Didn't read your link but I believe the guy who did it was also mentally ill.

A few Canadians on Ravelry-a forum I spend way too much time on..., were scared to send their kids to school on the bus in the days after that.

Irrational yes because it's fortunately such a rare thing to happen, but I could sympathise.

Never been to Tenerife as I don't like sun holidays but what happened there certainly wouldn't put me off going there if I did.
Something like that could just as easily happen here, or anywhere for that matter.

Have to come off-line now but I apologise if I came off a bit strong earlier, I'm not a grammar nazi honest, I just hate text speak on forums and find it annoying if I can't make out what someone is writing because of bad English (which is not always someones fault, I know that) ;)

However as regard your other posts I don't believe it's ever good to generalise about a populace i.e. "Morrocans are all..." or 'Irish are all drunks', 'Germans are all humourless and efficient'. Although having gone out with a German once... :D

    Peace.

OP are you really serious? I mean do you really think that decapitation is a daily/weekly event Tenerife? Here's a simple yardstick to help you, just ask yourself when was the last time Tenerife had such a decapitation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,272 ✭✭✭Barna77

Random beheading is a coming of age guanche tradition

FYI Guanches were the aboriginal inhabitants of the Canary Islands

Op, you're as likely to be decapitated in Tenerife as you are to be in a plane crash on the way there!

I know I'll be nervous travelling this Summer after reading the horrific summary of the 2009 Air France crash (RIP to the crew and passengers and I hope they didn't suffer), but I'll just have to put it to the back of my mind and know it rarely happens. Just like anybody holidaying in Tenerife this Summer.

when i saw the thread title i thought that it was going to be about the volcano on one of the Canary Islands that if it erupts might cause a massive tsumami (and kill us all).

OP you will probably be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,787 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

Tenerife is just one large volcano and if it blows it'll take out the whole east coast of the united states. According to the TV show I saw all this on it could blow at any second! No one should be going anywhere near Tenerife, or the east coast of the united states, the whole Atlantic ocean should be off limits just to be sure.

    I am!

Not that I'd do what the McCanns did, just puts me off the country. We holidayed there twice before and let's just say we found the pace too slow. We stopped going to the restaurants after being left waiting for over an hour for our meals - torture when the kids are hungry!
    Lots of other examples.

Anyway, this is not a Madeline thread....
