Recently was telling a few people about the Ardnacrusha salmon lift who plain refused to believe that a structure would be built for salmon to go into and be carried up a dam.

Then another time I asked someone in a non-serious way if two people die in an accident does the second person get carried in a trailer that looks like the back of a hearse? surprisingly I found out such a thing does exist

anyone had similar experiences where you were told something so far fetched and ridiculous and then it turned out to be true. or told something and got it laughed off as being ridiculous repeatedly?

Edit: I meant exists! feck it.

I told my father that the temp of a sauna is over 70 degrees, and he laughed at me, an dsaid someone would die in that heat. So then I told a doctor friend to tell my father, and they both laughed at me! Then I showed it to my father on the internet, and he laughed at me and the internet, and said we were both wrong! After you've drained pasta stir a little butter in to add flavour and a nice sheen - it also stops it sticking as it cools.

Just add in a few drops of olive oil once you've boiled up the water and are about to put the pasta in...does the same job

Add salt, but not oil

You may have heard that you can avoid sticky pasta by adding oil to the pasta water. This can prevent sticking, but at a great price. Pasta that's cooked in oily water will become oily itself and, as a result, the sauce slides off, doesn't get absorbed, and you have flavorless pasta.

Adding oil may keep the pasta water from bubbling up and boiling over the rim, but this can also be achieved by making sure you use a large pot and also by reducing the heat a little (but still maintaining a boil). This is a much better solution than greasing your pasta and sacrificing flavor.

Hmmm me not think of that. Doesn't seem to affect it imexp. I'll look closely next time and get back to you on it forthwith.

Maybe because they're discussing adding oil *during* the cooking as opposed to butter *afterwards*?

Yeah but the oil from the butter would still impede the sauce from absorbing and indeed will have greater oil coating than that which simply simmered in oil... more oil is likely to have washed away in the straining process compared to the butter method, where no straining occurs.

Personally, I would suggest simmering fusilli in oil, you will still get the unsticky effect while fusilli is itself so absorbent (much more absorbent than penne, for example) that it will still soak up the pasta sauce very nicely regardless of whether a little oil remains on the fusilli.

I'm not sure about putting oil in the water. I've heard it said that it's pretty useless.

Hactually if you google 'pasta oil water' the top 3 hits say that adding oil to the water is inadvisable.

I remember a man on The Late Late Show years ago talking about bottled water and how he was going to make a fortune from it. Gay Byrne and the entire audience laughed at the idea. I remember thinking he'd never make money from it either.
