Convering 16:9 video to 4:3 aspect - Win XP

My father in law has some old family footage on a DVD that someone archived for him years ago. Problem is, it was put into 16:9 format, when the original 8mm film is closer to 4:3, so the footage is stretched and everyone looks short and fat :-). Is there any free (or very cheap) conversion software available on Windows XP…

I don't want it to crop it to 4:3, but rather squeeze it from 16:9 to 4:3.

You'll need to rip the files from the dvd and convert them.

You could use any freeware dvd ripper (just for an example http://www.freewarezoom.com/archives/free-dvd-ripper) and then use VirtualDub to change the ratio.
