Italian chippers celebrate 'National Fish and Chips Day'

Traditional Italian chippers around the country will be offering cut-price takeaways to hungry punters today to mark 'National Fish and Chips Day'.

It's the second annual celebration of the humble one-and-one, and last year's event saw 180,000 people visit their local Irish Italian chipper.

Consumers munched an incredible 65,000lb of fish and €360,000 pounds of potatoes.

“We were completely overwhelmed by the response to National Fish & Chips Day last year," said Peter Borza, chairman of the Irish Traditional Italian Chippers Association (ITICA), the 200-member body established last year to represent the Irish Italian chipper community.

"The communities we have been part of for 125 years really engaged with the first annual celebration of the tradition.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our local communities for their support and encourage everyone to pick up a ‘one and one’ this National Fish and Chips Day!”

The Irish Italian chipper culture was started by members of the Irish Italian community who arrived in Ireland in the 1880s from the villages in Val Di Comino in southern Italy.

A question nobody has ever been able to give me an answer to... Why are so many chippers run by Italians? I know it says they moved here from a certain area, but why chips? They're hardly an Italian dish.

Also I've never heard the phrase 'one and one' before, is it a Dublin phrase?

Can't answer your first question but yup, a 'one 'n one' is a Dublin saying.

Italians came over during WW2, firstly to England. They got into the fish and chip trade there and then brought it over to Ireland.

Most of the Italian families who run the chippers here all come from the same small town in Italy...Borzas, Caffollas etc.

That's why there are no chippers in Italy, they developed the industry only after they left.

Yes it's a Dublin phrase which from a rael Dub sounds like a 'Wan and Wan ' .

"giz a single *burp*" also works

As in "I'll have Wan of them and wan of them" *pointing at the menu*.

From the time when a lot of the lads in the chippers didn't have the best English, no?

I've never heard one n' one outside Dublin, these crazy Dubs :)

    But they've a better one.
They don't order a bag of chips, they just ask for a single.
In Dublin a single is a bag of chips

Yeah I know that. But it originally came from lads pointing at the menu and saying "Wan of them and wan of them" because the Italian lads in the chippers didn't always understand the Dublin lads if they asked for anything more complicated.

I'm talking about back in the 50's here not in recent times. That's why it's called a 1 and 1.

Nothing like a cheap 'meal' for people who would normally have no intention of buying this food.

The marketing behind this is genius.
