I have left that facebook group, it was getting to the stage I am getting friend requests and spam messages asking me to vote for their comment and I hate that and that to be honest was the final straw... I will just enter comps from time to time now...

President Obama has landed! Did you know that he is Blackberry mad and has said that someone would have to pry his one from his hands before he'd ever give it up? Well to celebrate his visit we have a purple Blackberry Curve on the O2 network to give away. Just tell us your favourite thing about Blackberry for your chance to win :-)

I made a suggestion on the facebook site that the companies running the voting competitions should be named and shamed. If enough people reported the companies page or post as spam/ abuse of the terms, facebook would have to take action and the competition would then be run fairly for everyone. the facebook site seems to be a bit divided with people totally against those competitions and those who don't mind. I would love to know if the facebook group members WILL take a stand because its not the persons fault they have to ask for votes. I feel sorry for them myself and always do vote when I see a post because its basically impossible to win those. If people aren't willing to do anything about the problem apart from posting messages about how annoyed they are (which doesn't help anybody) they probably should keep those opinions to themselves. Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh especially for a Monday morning. I don't mean to offend anyone.
I would like to hear anyone else's thoughts.

I agree with the idea of trying to prevent pages from asking for likes, however I think marking a few as spam/abuse unfortunately won't achieve much if you look at the scope of what Facebook have to actually administer. I think doing it will still prompt the pages to stop if they see that they are marked as spam.

However I think for a lot of smaller companies, another idea might be to actually leave them a mail/comment stating that they shouldn't be doing it. As I said before, I think the bigger issue is that the people running the like competitions are usually less tech savvy and it's much easier than setting up an app tab for a competition. Also, they're less likely to have read the updated Ts&Cs and are more than likely just following suit from what they've seen countless other pages do in the past.

I might be being narrow minded there, but I think if you were to outright tell them that they shouldn't be doing it but you won't be reporting them, they'd be more receptive than just marking them as spam without telling them first. (Might even be friendly come their next comp ;) )

Anyway, that's my two cents, but if the majority think that marking them as spam is a better idea, we can try and get people to join in.

If you would like to be in with a chance of winning a LiftActiv Derm Source goody bag worth €80, then answer the following question:

What is the name of Vichy's new anti-ageing skincare line?
    answer is Derm Source
Email answers to fashion@rte.ie, stating your full name, address and contact telephone number.

(I really hope the karma on this one comes back to me, I need new moisturiser;))

To be honest, I didn't join the group to end up with messages in my Facebook inbox asking me to vote for them or friends requests (just because they want a facebook vote).

That to me is misuse of the FB group and all I wanted from the group was links to active competitions that we all could enter, not spam messages and spam facebook friend requests.

I have an issue with the fact that this thread is becoming a debating session about the facebook page, maybe try keeping the debate about the facebook group on facebook?

I find this page has good comps regularly:

Enter this competition for your chance to win a whole house makeover! Answer simple question: Where did you hear about Hillarys blinds?

    http://www.hillarys.ie/your-chance-to-win.htm

Closing date for entries is 05/12/2011. The winning entry will be drawn on 06/12/2011 and the winner will be notified within 7 days after the draw by phone/letter

Just Googled the company to see if they were reputable. Going on these reviews, I'm not very impressed and don't know if I would want them doing work in my house .....even if it was a prizeicon8.gif

I am staying well away from the Hillarys competition. I tried to get them to put some blinds up for me last year and they kept getting the measurements wrong so they didn't fit. It took about 4 months to get my money back but at least I did in the end. They were also on the program watchdog about two weeks ago because of the number of complaints and damage done to customers houses.

I agree with this, so apologies for carrying it on briefly.

If people don't want to join the Facebook page that is fine, if people join and then decide to leave that's fine too - we don't need an official statement ;)

As was stated, it is the companies who are running the "Like competitions" are at fault, not the people who hope for a win! Good idea to leave a comment on their wall to let them know - I see it has already worked with the Bloom competition.

I had never entered a Facebook comp until last week and I have won a prize already :D and it wasn't a Like Comp. Also the members of the Facebook page really want to help people win and even have tagged me and others to improve our chances of winning - so I am very happy with the Facebook page.

And the end of my "rant", would it be possible to keep the Facebook page for Facebook Competitions and that all other competitions would be posted here like before, that is email entries, "snail mail", website comps etc. At least then we would only need to post competitions once and for those who aren't on Facebook, all the "normal competitions" would appear here and they won't miss out!

Most of us on the fb have a competition account and are adding others who also have a competition account. So im guessing people who were trying to add you were just doing it as they thought it wasnt your main account.

And as for the "spam" I hardy call one message spam. Its not repeated over and over and takes all of 2 secs to know what it is, if its not your thing to vote for someone thats prefect thats your own right but it was only was someone asking for help and would of taken you less than 30secs to read the mail. I have 2 accounts in the group and have only gotten one message asking for a vote since the page opened so its hardly spam.

Ok so it seems I have annoyed some people by mailing them asking them for a like in a competition I am in. I didnt think people would get so annoyed by it as I wouldnt if I got one but guess im just more laided back and dont take any notice of stuff like that, anyway im never going to mail anyone again asking for votes and I whole heartly apologize for annoying people and im sorry for the inconvience I caused.

Its not the people asking for the votes breaking the rules its the company's running it.

I didn't say the people taking part were breaking the rule but knowingly allowing people to promote the comp on the facebook page is complying with rule breaking.
In some cases the people taking part in the 'voting' comps are rule breaking and this is the problem with those competitions. They are wide open to abuse.

In response to someone elses post - i post on the fb pages of the companies running the comps as often as i can to highlight their rule breaks, some companies respond positively (ballygarry house hotel today) others delete my comments(chefs garden direct)!
If anyone is interested there is a group on Fb to help ban voting comps http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_155890447767520

I've posted here because the facebook page is linked with boards.ie and Darragh has asked for feedback re:issues with the thread and the direction it's taking :)
