It's because they're not allowed to marry the women they'd like to marry so they turn to child abuse as an outlet for their sexual tensions.
So it's all the Catholic church's fault.

30 years ago if someone noticed their son didn't like girls their own age they would ship them off to the priesthood. They'd be educated and taught latin and they'd turn from being the shame of their family to the pride of it.

And years later we find out why, exactly, they didn't like girls their own age

It's a very Irish problem, op. And I compare it to Cain's sacrifice. The Irish mammy sent junk to the priesthood and she reaped what she sowed.

If it's an Irish problem, why's it happening all over the world?

I think it is more a case of they were paedophiles who became priests because it took away the pressure of having to pretend you liked women, and the vow of chastity just intensified it.

They traditionally became priests because of the easy access to children. Not so much anymore as the church don't run things as much as they used too and parents wouldn't dare leave their kids with them.
Kids used to stay over night at the priest houses and that was when the were fiddled with.

They went for kids as they were vulnerable easy targets. Paedos knew they would have easy access working there. Others who aren't paedos but are sadistic knew they could exhert their power easily.

The people in the church that turned a blind eye to this problem should be in as much trouble as the people that commited the crimes!!

I know it's possible. St Johns Seminary in Boston was an 'exporter" of paedophiles. One class from the seventies had a paedophile rate seven times the national average.

Given the power and opportunities to abuse that being a priest brought and the lengths the RCC go to to protect pedophile priests you would have to wonder if it's the other way around.. i.e. pedophiles become priests rather than priests become pedophiles.

Because historically, if a family had a slightly odd child, they stuck them into the priesthood. That slightly odd individual was then exposed to the ridiculous carry on in the Catholic Church which turned them into a child abusing monster.

We all know people who are a bit "funny". These people were stuck into the priesthood in years gone by. Square pegs into round holes.
