I had a problem with my M1730, it was dead!!! I finally fixed the problem but the hard drive went faulty when it died.... I have tried 2 different drives since to try and load windows 7. I had success but for some reason it would switch off during the updates after installation. this is a genuine copy of windows. anyway from formatting and reformatting and changing drives a load of times. it finally could not see any drive in the bios. i think i might have damaged the cable for the drive due to all the changing i was doing. i have ordered a new cable but i just want to know has anybody had any problem loading windows on this laptop or do you have any tips? hopefully i only damaged the cable......
also sometimes when loading windows it could not format the drive....

Bit confused when you say you damaged the cable?? That has a sata drive that just plugs in, if your laptop is dying intermittently it could be a dodgy DC Jack Cable?

What was the original problem. Maybe something else is blown on the laptop like the sata controller. Can you run a Live CD ok?

    Ok,
Yes it is a SATA drive but it is connected with a special ribbon cable to the motherboard.(it can actually take 2 drives).
I got the new cable during the week, all is well again as regarding seeing the drive.
I have managed to load windows 7 but the machine randomly shuts down still.

It is especially prone to it when doing updates. Still haven't completed this as it always shuts down at some stage.....
I think the video card might be the problem... it is a nvidia 8800 GTX Dual SLI.
I tried to load newer drivers for the card but it just crashed halfway through.

Any other tips from XPS M1730 owners....
