There are some major changes in effect with freebsd 5.0 release. its not stable yet as one would imagine as its the first release of a new series.

They are still developing the 4.x source tree aswell, I for one will stick to this till at least 5.2 release or a stable tree appears in the source for 5.x

For the time being people who run hosting servers or mission critical applications from freebsd 4.x based machines, they should also stay with the 4.x src tree untill such time that 5.x tree becomes available.

For people who like to be knee deep in the cutting edge then 5.0 release is for you, but be prepared to get your hands dirty to get your favourite apps and hardware working.

A friend D/l'ed, Burned and Installed 4.7 the day before 5 came out. (He wanted it to mess around with FreeBSD) Needless to say he was irate when I told him that 5 had been released the following morning

4.7 would be the stable release, 5 i would imagine is still a bit buggy

When you're only installing something as a second/third OS for messing around with stability isn't the primary concern.

I'm sure messing with 5.0 would have been worth the hassle.
