Love the Galaxy and going abroad for a couple of days - is it safe to use my yahoo mail on the phone in hotels / open wifi areas ?

I assume you are referring to this vunerability:

http://www.gmanews.tv/story/221046/technology/google-fixes-android-security-flaw

It only affects Google services, your Yahoo mail would be protected by normal https/ssl

Update to 2.3.4 to rule out a (very unlikely) man in the middle attack on your calendar/contacts.
