Yeah pretty sure he can't do that. Contact the department but also make sure to contact the S.U.

I have contacted the education officer on his views and possible action that could be taken. Still waiting to hear from him. I overheard the invigilators giving out about it too, maybe they could have reported it also.

I don't mind Neptune for noise but there was a fella next to me who was cheating, now that was distracting! He kept looking at a bit of paper in his hoodie pocket, don't know how he wasn't caught. He wasn't from my class at least, would have been more pissed off if he was, competition and all.:D

I don't know what to make of our clown of a lecturer coming into 10-15 minutes into our exam telling we us we had to do 4 questions instead of 5.Very angry since he stated clearly in an email that it would be 3 out of 5. So pissed!

That sort of crap would make me go ballistic in an exam. Im nervous enough when it comes to doing any sort of exam but for someone to do that is just bloody wrong. You should definitely report this lecturer!

Had ec3115 in the Kampus Kitchen this morning. could have been much worse tbh. Seriously irritating guy rattling m&ms off his teeth just next to me though....

While I agree that the situation was atrocious, I'm not sure if kicking up a fuss is going to do anything positive either. What are you going to say to the Head of Maths - I only studied 60% of the course so this was unfair on me? I don't think he or anyone else is going to have much sympathy if that's where you're coming from, and that's where we all (myself included) would be coming from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭.E_C_K_S.

No, I studied the parts of the course that I knew would come up so I could choose my 3 best out of the 5 questions and answer these as well as I could not becoming aware of an extra question 10-15 minutes into an exam where I had already made my choice and noted down certain ways on tackling those 3 questions. While the majority of the class probably did fine anyways, it is the conduct of the lecturer that really annoys me and I think it is unacceptable and I certainly will be making an issue of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭Eliot Rosewater

That's fair enough. I just wouldn't be expecting any kind of promise for better marks for all. But if it raises awareness of the ridiculous situation then go for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭.E_C_K_S.

Thats what I think the main problem is-if he thinks he can just go in change the format and act like nothing happened then there is something wrong and I hope this is taken into account in the results. (he should give over 70% to all students:D)

Roommates exams canceled because of a bomb scare...mine still on...woken up at 5.30am to evacuate the building because a bomb was found...immediately told to return to my building...nice one...

Incidentally, a guard wrapping on your door saying a bomb has been found at half five in the morning is the best wake up you can ask for. If I had that every morning of study month I'd be sorted...not so appreciated the morning of an exam, mind you!

I had an exam yesterday and there was a girl about 2 rows over from me sniffing about every 5 seconds. *Sniff*...*Sniff*...*Sniff*... It was really distracting, and I noticed a few other people were put off by it too. I was so tempted to ask an invigilator to get her a tissue. And then, about an hour in, she pulled out a tissue and blew her nose.

How do people not realise how distracting things like that are? I know she couldn't help it, as she obviously had a cold or hayfever, but christ above. She had a tissue the whole time!

Finished yesterday with Business and IS Performance. Grand paper too!

And with that, my last exam ever :)

Had Celtic Saints Yesterday - was a bit fit to kill the guys playing football outside the mini and screaming, but the exam was perfect :) Girl sitting across from me had her phone ring twice (on the ground) and nothing was said she just hung up.

Lol!! I was directly across from her!!! Annoying as hell but not nearly as annoying as the girl in front of her with the squeaky shoes.

I'd flip if I was in your position especially when she had a tissue the whole time!
Got an e-mail back for the education officer "Lectures are perfectly within their rights to change the content of the exam once the material was covered."

I wonder does that cover coming 10-15 minutes while the exam is on and then telling you it has changed. Some joke.

But the content did not change, the format did. Check previous papers and see how many questions did you had to do. If I was in that position, I'd have prepared the time of the exam to do three questions, doing a fourth messes with the timing you already have set down and is very disruptive to students. Its wrong to do that

    I got an e-mail back

"As I maintain he is within his rights to do it.

If you still wish to proceed I would advise writing a letter outlining the issues as you have done to me, but in a very factual and not emotive tone and send it to the head of college Pat Fitzpatrick. It's important that you mention to him that you want this information brought to the exam board. I would also recommend that you get the entire class to sign it and send copies to the Registrar Paul Giller and the head of the maths department. "

So I still have three exams left and he wants me to do all this by myself a week before I head away to America on a J-1. Tell me again what role this education officer is suppose to be doing? What a waste of time.

Within his rights to change the format during an exam?? Are they for real?? Its crazy! That education officer should be investigating it themselves or at the least offering you help rather than advice.

I'd send an email out to your class, which you can do through blackboard if the module is up there, and see what they think about it.

Basically he knows you probably wont have the time to do this so its an easy way for him to wriggle out of actually doing a bit of work.

Insist to the head of Dept that the matter is raised with the external examiners. They call the shots!
A copy of the exam paper in the old format would have been sent to the extern for his approval early in the year - if a change was made by the extern this would have been done before the exam papers were printed - so no excuse for a last minute change.
If the extern did not approve the change-then the new format was not approved.
No point contacted the Education officer - this is a departmental issue to be dealt with by the head, externs and exam board. The head will want to deal with this in-house to prevent looking bad in front of the externs.

Absolute joke of an exam today, Individual Differences. I'll be surprised if I don't have to repeat in August.

I've got another exam tomorrow and then nothing until Wednesday. I'm finished the next day thank christ!

I don't whether to complain or not still about the lecturer. Might just be better off letting it go.

On another note, the fire alarm went off for 25 minutes today 5 minutes into our exam! Couldn't be happier:D

Or if you don't like the marks it gives you grounds for appeal.

This. Definitely say something, if only so he can't do this again for other years! And stuff like this would be taken into account I'd say, especially if you're borderline...it would really mess with my head anyway I know, you time questions based on how many you've to do, 15 mins in to add a question is a bit of a joke! I wonder how much time lecturers have to do this and still be "well within their rights" to change it? Cos if it was half an hour in to an hour and a half exam that'd be an awful lot...

Out of interest, was it printed on the front of the paper how many you've to do? I think it usually is.

Yeah, any exam paper I've come across it is written on it!

Had an absolutely horrible exam today, I apparently was really pale with fear before the exam, I knew it would be bad. It exceeded all my expectations, I've never done so bad in an exam in my life, I'm still in shock. At least they are all over now though and I can finally relax

an appeal is way too expensive :O

probably best just emailing the guy on the bottom of p1 of the appeals form

It was yeah. I didn't bother looking at the front though - I just raced into the exam. And I was thinking, if I could get my 3 questions done by 10 past 3 I could leave early to do a bit of revision for my half 4 exam. Thank god that didn't happen anyway! :pac:
