But it's the Queen's flag. And for all you know that women could have been from Northern Ireland.
Needless to say it shouldnt have been taken

No i dont. They are not making a protest against the british people, big difference. btw i have no time for them either but having a go at them for your reason is a bit petty imo.

What he said isn't that far from the truth...

I was sitting in the epicurean food hall eaten mah lunch and some drunk guy was asking people for bricks so he could throw them at the TV when the Queen was on it. No one gave him a brick though.

Flags from both sides should not be taken. People should be allowed to wave whatever flag they like provided it hasn't been defaced to include inciting words. Whoever up top made that decision got it wrong IMO

Is it an acceptance that all of Ireland should be free from British rule? Thats what those men and women wanted.

The guys that founded America wanted black people as slaves. Doesn't stop the yanks acknowledging what they did achieve without blatantly ignoring what the current generation want.

    Excuse me ?

For not the first time in this thread would you mind making a point so that we can see if you're talking sense for a change ?

What "association" are you on about ?

The idiot had a flag from a British newspaper. FACT. And laughable.

Why not? A flag is a politically charged symbol that can cause trouble on a sensitive day like today. If Union flags are being confiscated republican flags should be no different.

If I want to carry my national flag around dublin I should bloody well be allowed to and not have the Gardaí imitating the RUC in confiscating tricolors.

a flag is a piece of cloth that is only embued with meaning if someone does something like confiscate it.

Under all circumstances? So if someone was walking down the road waving it people's faces, they should be allowed to hold onto the flag?

Why exactly would you want to carry around a tricolour with you? That's what I can't get my head around.

Do you often forget your nationality?

BBC are reporting Richard Boyd Barrett is going to protest the visit 'later'. After that he will protest the thunderstorms we had the other day, followed by a demonstration at the opening of a packet of crisps in dundrum before a public vigil against his unrelenting loneliness

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,581 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Garda Public Order Unit (aka the Riot squad) are over at the Garden of Remembrance. Fairly sharpish the protesters will settle down I'd imagine. They're well outnumbered today

The fact you question why anyone would want to carry their own national flag is laughable.

So we should ban people having national flags then?

I think it would be very disrespectful of you to carry our national flag around a crowded city street like it is your personal drool bib.

    http://www.taoiseach.gov.ie/upload/publications/1104.pdf

    Respect for the National Flag

14 The National Flag when used as a decoration should
always be treated with due respect. It may be used as
a discreet lapel button or rosette or as part of a centrepiece for a table. When used in the latter context with
the flags of other nations, the National Flag should
also be displayed in the place of honour on a nearby
flag staff. Where multiple National Flags are flown on
festive occasions these should be of uniform dimen
sions. Bunting of the National Colours may also be
    used on festive occasions

Even as a Brit living in Ireland, I wouldn't be so crass as to be waving union jacks around here (or anywhere else, tbh. Just plain tacky).
I just hope something tangible in the way of progress comes from this. Anglo-Irish relations have been reasonably good for a while now, and I welcome anything that further enhances that warm relationship. I'm not a great monarchist myself, not even when I was living in England. But, if old Queenie can help things along, then why not?
