Disturbing. This visit can only end in tears if people waving the British flag are going to be allowed on the streets.

Why can "it only end in tears" ? People in America wave Irish flags on St Patrick's Day. Just because a minority of idiots want to stir up trouble doesn't mean we should cave in and let them dictate.

I have a problem with the phrase "the Queen", therefore I do have a nationalistic streak, but I completely disown anyone who threatens violence because we are a republic and such petty views and threats are unwelcome and not representative of the ideals of true republicanism, which are liberty, equality and fraternity (brotherhood) - for ALL.

Ireland is a corrupt cesspit not because of the British, but because of "our own", and to be honest if anyone took over and ran the place for the good of ordinary people, I'd relinquish any sovereignty in return for a decent society.

I understand your points but you seem to view "Irish" things as exclusive and foreign sports as incompatible.

I appreciate Gaelic football and hurling, the game of the Gods, doesn't mean I can't appreciate soccer, rugby, snooker, hockey, golf or cricket (though I hate it).

We have our distinctive cultures, doesn't mean we have to reject others.

Quite the contrary: this was initiated because a 'republican' poster rejected Irish culture and embraced British culture. In other words, embracing British culture was not an eclectic act, but one of rejection of Irish culture. There is a huge difference between this and the ideas which you're running away with now.

And is our "distinctive culture" really worth self-government? How "distinctive" is it without the Irish language, traditional music or Irish sports, which are the things which were rejected in the post which I've challenged? Do any remaining difference justify having a sovereign state, rather than a regional administration?

Independence is about being a Republic, where all views respected equally. I respect your view, just think it's blinkered and our dated.

Given that you patently don't know my view, this piss-poor attempt at paraphrasing Voltaire is, well, fairly superficial.

Are you saying all views are not respected equally in a constitutional monarchy like Britain? That British people are not "independent" because they are not in a republic? Let me have a go at being patronising and supercilious: "I respect your view, just think it's blinkered and out-dated".

Sounds a bit like FF, the GAA and the RC being the bedrocks of Irish society and Irishness.

Hold on a minute: where, in what I've said, is the basis for this, particularly the RC bit? Anybody familiar with my posts here will have a very good idea of my views of Fianna Fáil. Are you really that desperate to box somebody into your preferred stereotype? It would be simpler then, I suppose.

Ah right, funny you quote him as some form of authority but reject the Catholic bit. You aren't Irish then!

Not as an "authority", but rather as somebody who pointed to a valuable cultural distinction between Irish-Ireland and British-Ireland. Nothing more to it.

    K-9 wrote: »
As for the RC's history, you can say the same about the Protestant church's in Northern Ireland.

True, and many histories of the Church of Ireland which I've read argue that it is the true Christian inheritor of the Church which Patrick (allegedly) founded. Although the sense that Roman Catholicism is a "native" Irish religion is much stronger and the enormous obliteration of traditional Irish religious beliefs by a distinctly different Roman Catholic church from, at least, the 1790s is greatly underacknowledged by Irish Catholics.

Do you truly believe these two situations are comparable, Liam?

What you or I think about the situation is neither here nor there. The fact that there are numerous people who have anger and a target is what matters when it comes to anticipating reaction to this visit tomorrow. If it's an "in your face" visit, they're sure to react more than they would if it were treated the same as a visit by any other head of state.

Wtf the cares what a "Republican poster" says. Why does it bother you so much?
And is our "distinctive culture" really worth self-government?

Who knows? To answer with a question. I'd be interested in your opinion.

You just keep asking questions and don't really answer ones!
Are you saying all views are not respected equally in a constitutional monarchy like Britain?

    No. Constitutional monarchy? Whataboutery.
That British people are not "independent" because they are not in a republic?

    You do love rhetorical questions.
Let me have a go at being patronising and supercilious: "I respect your view, just think it's blinkered and out-dated".

Not patronising, blinkered or out dated at all. You have the right to think it and I have to disagree with it. The disagreeing part people tend to have a problem with .

Just quoting another subjective opinion of Irishness.

Not as an "authority", but rather as somebody who pointed to a valuable cultural distinction between Irish-Ireland and British-Ireland. Nothing more to it.

Yet he attachs significance to Catholicism as being Irish, you reject it, why not the others?

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

    They should be.
What you or I think about the situation is neither here nor there.

    Then why did you ask?

In fact, I'd actually dispute the above because as a law-abiding taxpaying citizen of this country I am entitled to demand that violent thugs don't get their way, regardless of whether they are "common" criminals or ones hiding under a supposed "cause".
The fact that there are numerous people who have anger and a target is what matters when it comes to anticipating reaction to this visit tomorrow. If it's an "in your face" visit, they're sure to react more than they would if it were treated the same as a visit by any other head of state.

Jedward were "in my face" all last week, and I detested it. Who am I entitled to threaten and kill as a result?

In fact, the problem with Ireland is that not enough people would go out on the streets wearing t-shirts with "f**k off violent thugs, you don't speak for anyone"

I dislike the queen and the whole concept of royalty, and I actually hate that two countries that started an illegal war in Iraq will be feted by our leaders without a single critical word being uttered, but I don't accept that a group can threaten to murder people as a result.

My sister text me from Maynooth saying there is a bomb scare there.

Seriously, who thought that allowing the Queen over was a good idea?!

Call me cynical, but we already look like idiots on the world-stage. The bomb scare in London earlier was headline news all over the world. More prominent news than the visit itself will be.

A great success all round.. and the bull**** hasn't even started yet

Gardai are now allegedly telling those in the vacinity of the glenroyal to go indoors.

Sounds like controlled explosion imminent and Dublin Bus to lose another of its steeds.

It was always going to end in tears. Even an English bloke i work with is annoyed about the whole thing. I mean Dublin is going to look like fort knox tomorrow, how the fu ck is that a welcome for the queen?

I'm not worried about the people who are organising the protests its the scumbags that will see this as an opportunity to cause a bit hassle. Similar to the love ulster parade a couple of years back

Yea, they found a 'device' in a bus at the bus stop across from the hotel. And you won't get near.. they've cleared everyone out of the parking lot, the road and even the kids play park a bit of the way up, my house mate was just diverted away. Apparently it wasn't meant for here though I don't know how people could know that already..

    Probably a brolly.

Seriously folks the likelihood of a bomb in the republic is slim, Dublin virtually nil. Would be more worried about up north or Britain.
