Dionysus, Bobby Sands was an Aston Villa fan and proud of it. Most other men "on the blanket" supported a PL team. If they can Im pretty sure I can support Man Utd.

I hate GAA. I cant play any instrument. My Irish is pretty bad.(in fact many volunteers only learnt Irish in jail, Dessie Ellis ran a gaeltacht on the republican wing in Portlaoise)

If one does not satisfy the above criteria are they, in your book, not Irish?

What's the point in Irish freedom if you're just going to be culturally British people living in Ireland? It's not worth it in my view. Why, in your view, is that type of Ireland worth fighting for?

With the money they are giving us, you should have did it in pound signs instead.

At least have the decency to know why Britain is giving "us" this money. The way some people talk you'd swear the British created the greatest empire in world history by being nice to people for the sake of it. Britain is giving Ireland the money because the British state has companies with enormous investments in Ireland. It wants to protect those investments. Basic cop-on. There's nothing altruistic about it or, for that matter, bad about their motivations. It's simple business. Don't try to dress it up as charity when it's nothing of the sort.

So I am "culturally British" because I like soccer and don't like GAA? Big west brit I am for playing rugby too?

I wouldn't presume to tell people what they can and cannot like, or what sports they can or cannot play.

Thats what it boils down to. I want an Ireland that is free to decide its own destiny. If people want to watch soccer then thats cool. Self

So you want an Ireland in which everyone speaks Irish, plays GAA and dances at crossroads? What will we do with all those people up north who call themselves British?

You still haven't answered the question: why would Ireland be better off united and sovereign when it's basically a "new England called Ireland" (to translate an old poet)? Not a single life is worth that, in my view.

And if you're going to debate, at least avoid attributing clichéd drivel like "dancing at the crossroads" to your opponents. It has a certain lowness about it. Now, will you answer the question?

Like the vast majority of people, I'm pretty much indifferent to the whole Queen visit. I wish her to remain safe and well while here, but I wouldn't go to the end of the street to see her.

The only slight problem I have is the insensitivity of having her arrive on the anniversary of the Dublin\Monaghan bombings!

Was spotted by another AH mod about 60 seconds after I posted it. It's a wonder it took so long before it was noticed.

Because it isnt a "new England called Ireland". Thats the most stupid thing I've ever heard.

Unless Ireland becomes some kind of hollywood celtic theme park then we may as well stay under the control of Westminster?

You were telling a story about it! It even included the line ""The blanket" - how many people reading this even know what that was?" You could have easily explained it, no need to get sarky.

How old are you? That any Irishman doesn't know that phrase seems strange to me, regardless of what one thinks of those in Long Kesh or the hunger strikes.

Even money she gets a present of a thoroughbred racehorse (filly.) The Queen is mad keen to visit Kildare and Tipperary.

Conversely I do, or did, play GAA, at inter-county level as a yound lad, I am very partial to Irish music, though alas I cannot play. Not over bothered about the Irish language (though I ebb and flow a bit on it) but that is largely down to the zealous way it is promoted.

Moral of the story: Trying to establish some sort of stock definition of what makes an Irish person is plainly daft.

As an aside I played Gaelic football for years as a keeper, just never liked it.
